Healthcare Heat on the Blue Dogs

Michelle Oddis has the top story at Human Events today.

House and Senate Democrats are moving full speed ahead with their healthcare overhaul after last week’s lengthy summit.

Yesterday, President Obama said “no matter which approach you favor, I believe the United States Congress owes the American people a final vote on health-care reform,” abstaining from using the word reconciliation but calling for an “up or down vote.”

But before leadership can go forward with the legislative process known as reconciliation or the “nuclear option” in the Senate, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi must once again round up the 218 votes needed for the bill to pass in the House, putting a bright spotlight back on the 54 so called fiscally conservative Democrat members in the Blue Dog Coalition who should oppose the $950 billion dollar package.

Any chance of enough heat on David Scott GA-13

Oh, wait. He would just paint more swastikas on his office buildings.

Blue Dogs?

I’ve often heard of these mythical creatures but have never seen one myself. Legend has it, that if you wish hard enough and put all your faith in them, that they will materialize before your eyes and save you from harm.

Claims he has 12 votes that would flip on abortion. And that is an issue that largely could not be fixed by reconciliation. If they have to fix that…they have to go to the Senate first.

This should be interesting to watch.

It's always been suspicious to me

That the original house bill passed with exactly the needed vote count. Feels like Pelosi granted dispensation to some Democrats in tough districts. We get to see now whether or not there are arms that can still be twisted. Common sense tells us that there are, though.

But that included the pro-lifers...

Now she needs votes to compensate for their loss as well as the loss of the post Massachusetts defectors–yes votes that turned to no–and there are many, as many as 100 according to some (probably inflated) accounts. She also has to contend with those who are now leaning towards a new and smaller bill–a notion making the rounds in the House and getting momentum among former yes voters.

It seems to me yesterday’s speech by Obama was designed to head these challenges off by reassuring the House that it’s okay to pass the Senate bill and to trust the Senate to “fix” it afterwards through reconciliation. I don’t think that’ll wash. The ten House members he invited to the WH won’t all be won over. At least some of them will succumb to the biggest pressure of all that comes from constituents who hate the bill.

I share your suspicion NotSoBlue

and sadly your fears as well .

But we must fight on

Supposed Blue Dog Melancon weighs in

Steve Maley (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 9:40AM EST (link)

Link.

“I think they’ve got less votes,” said Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, one of the 39 Democrats, many of them conservative Blue Dog Democrats, who voted against the House bill. And he said he won’t be reversing himself to vote in favor of whatever amalgam of House and Senate plans emerges as the final product.

Melancon noted that the House leadership already starts three votes down from November because of the death of Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., and the retirements of Reps. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., and Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, so “they’re already in a bind there.”

On the opposite end of the Democratic spectrum, Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said he is now leaning against voting for any final package because of Obama’s recent efforts to embrace some Republican ideas in the name of bipartisanship.

Grijalva said Obama’s letter Tuesday, citing four worthy Republican ideas on health care, infuriated and insulted him and his allies, who saw the president embrace health savings accounts at a new “pillar of reform,” even as the public option, which Grijalva said is the single most popular provision with his constituents, was shoved off the table entirely.

Definition of a blue dog

wayneinnh (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 10:01AM EST (link)

A blue dog is just a yellow dog holding his breath to get what he wants.

Jon 14:6 –
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

It’s not intellectual to believe we evolved from hydrogen gas.

Republicans must show Raw deterination and gunine anger in FIGHTING this bill

dio55 Thursday, March 4th at 10:00AM EST (link)

If they do not and this monster passes the anger and resentment of the people will be directed to Republicans as well as Democrats because Republicans will be seen as assleep at the wheel . This will only strengthen third party candidates which I think will be a disaster fo republicans in november . Raw determination to fight and Gunine anger will however strongly distinguish Republicans from Democrats and hence a much stronger showing in november with little or no third party support. A simple truth.

Disagree.

The Dems own this. The GOP, no matter how ineffectual, will not be blamed for any of this. But so far the Dems are losing the battle. Today another yes vote announced she may switch to no. That’s two yes votes switching–while the no votes are holding the line with their ranks swollen by pro-lifers.

Just roll over on command? Sure they bark a lot first but when it comes down to it they can’t cave in fast enough.
