Bob Bennett, so intent on winning re-election in Utah cast as the social conservative he is not, insisted that he be the Republican point man on gay marriage in Washington, D.C.
Bennett sponsored a resolution that would force DC to put the issue to a referendum vote.
But did Bennett fight for the legislation and force the Senate to vote on it?
Nope.
Gay marriage begins in DC tomorrow. Thanks, Bob.
Oh, and thanks to Bennett’s bungling, Catholic adoption agencies in DC that refuse to handle gay adoptions are having to shut down.

Nick Haynes (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 2:02AM EST (link)Or are you stating that you can’t be a conservative if you support allowing gays to marry?
Because, from the two posts on this thread, I don’t see anything that I don’t agree with, and I’ll guarantee you that I’m about as hardcore conservative/libertarian/Republican as it comes. I’ll agree Bob Bennett has to go, but simply because he’s a weak-kneed “centrist” (read: moral fiber-less) who has displayed absolutely no leadership on any issue whatsoever.
But if you’re drawing a line on gay marriage…sorry–you don’t get to determine what is and what is not conservative.
If you’re not networking, you’re not helping.

nothing immoral about marriage
merkinmuffley Thursday, March 4th at 12:21AM EST (link)It reflects commitment both to another person and to society as a whole.
Pornography is immoral.
Divorce (breaking a vow one makes before God) is immoral.
Promiscuity is immoral.
Commitment is moral.

MF (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 12:26PM EST (link)Homosexuality is immoral. That’s not just my opinion – it’s what the Bible says, in spite of what some try to tell us. I’ll leave it at that.
Conservative doesn't necessarily mean Christian
acat (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 1:48PM EST (link)I’m less concerned about the government granting some sort of “right of marriage” than I am the government demanding the church grant a “Rite of Marriage”.
All that said, there are conservatives who aren’t christians. There are also conservatives who aren’t particularly interested in having the government take on more and more of the role designated to the church. Remember all those bits in the bible about caring for the poor? What do you think medicare, medicaid, social security, food stamps, etc. are?
That’s somewhat off track though. While I don’t have a big problem with getting government out of the marriage game, I *do* have a problem with Bennett saying he’d take point and then sticking his head in the sand. That would be like someone demanding (and getting) a promotion, and then ignoring the responsibilities of the new job. If this happened in the private sector, the person would be fired. Why not fire Bennett?

Welfare is not taking care of the poor, as described
d_lamar Thursday, March 4th at 3:29PM EST (link)in the Bible.
Nowhere in the Bible are there any admonishments to give to the Roman authorities so that they can use the funds to take care of the poor. The Bible clearly directs us to “personally” take care of the poor. We as Christians cannot take solace that we are in compliance with Biblical instructions because of a government welfare program.
There is absolutely nothing “Christian” about any welfare programs. In fact, government welfare is antithetical to Christian belief.
(thread creep) Welfare is the church abdicating...
acat (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 3:38PM EST (link)Not sure why you aren’t familiar with the history of the welfare programs, d_lamar, but a number of ‘em were sold to the American people with promises that they would take care of “widows and orphans”.
Perhaps you’re familiar with the phrase “I gave at the office”, a reference to someone who got hit up by United Way, and uses it as an excuse to not give to a church or other charitable organization.
My point is that the church has abdicated their responsibility, designating the government to do the job, and thus a smaller government and increased local (religious or not) charity should be the goal of every christian.
Not that it has much to do with Bennett.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 2:09PM EST (link)we could choose to fight this on every front forever. But we could also pull the rug out of the left wing agenda by simply getting government out of the marriage business. If we do that, no state could allow gay marriage because they would have no power to allow any marriage.
If marriage is a religious ceremony and not a governmental action such as paying taxes, then why have government involved at all?
To be clear, I oppose gay marriage, yet as this goes on I wonder more and more why the government sanctions marriage at all. And if someone wants to retort with age limits etc, that is covered by other laws.

randy streu (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:27AM EST (link)As far as the government is concerned, marriage is essentially treated as a contract — so why not just eliminate the religious/personal language of “marriage” and call it what it is?
What we’re really talking about when we talk about Marriage in the eyes of gov’t is a social contract. We’re talking financial and living arrangements. Really, there’s no reason two unmarried adults of either gender (regardless of sexual orientation, actually) shouldn’t be allowed to sign such a document wherein they agree to share certain cost-of-living expenses, act as one another’s proxies in certain medical situations, etc.

Please look back, you will find the comment that I was working for “wooden nickles” and, that I was too busy to reply to him for that reason. He said that I was too busy “servicing” manuel. Please look it up.

I invited Aaron to apologize to me for that, since he holds such big store in “apologizing for anything and everything he disagrees with. It seems that Aaron is using his front page status as a bullet above my head. I have asked, repeatedly in the past, that he stay away from me and my posts, and, I have avoided his posts. It didn’t make the first bit of difference to him that I reached out to him, for the sake of civility, and, have posted to some of his posts in the manner of caring. I was sorry for the loss of his dad, I was elated for the news of his new coming baby, and I honored his status as a front page poster. The man has a vendetta. I am not a victim, and, have never posted as such. If you find posts of mine where I claim victim status, please show me the error of my thinking. This must be resolved, as, no one needs to follow any one around to disparage any one’s posts. Jaded asked Kyle to stop stalking her. It does happen here some times.

Yes exactly, some people in mental institutions should not be able to marry
Scope (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 10:16AM EST (link)In many cases, mental institution patients are there because they pose a danger to themselves and/or others. Many are there because they are not capable of rational thought, and, have no sense of right from wrong. They are not competent to make decisions for themselves. In those cases, laws are necessary to protect the innocent, and to also protect the patients themselves from possible exploitation. A friend, who works in a mental hospital was stabbed by a patient with a fork because she asked the patient to be seated. Should that person be allowed to do the same to a spouse, or to a possible child as a result of that marriage?
From a book written by Dr. Mark Cooray-
“Moral values have been attacked by socialists, progressivisits, and libertarians. Some socialists, emphasizing regulation and social systems, belittle moral and individual responsibility. Common, broad based values are not seen as ennobling. They are regarded as restrictive and repressive. Some libertarians, stressing the importance of the freedom of the individual, have also been responsible by silence and sometimes by active espousal of near absolute freedom, for the decline in committment to broadly agreed values. The libertarian, by emphasizing the success at any cost ethic, has been responsible for fostering an epidemic of amorality.”
“An unembarrassed sense of morality is essential to the formulation of public policy and determination of the role of government, as well as to the life of culture and civilization. A shared morality has been a significant facet in the rise and development of western civilization. The fragmentation of that morality is one of the tensions of the present.”
“Many civilizations (notably that of Rome) which have fallen prey to sloth and permissivness have declined and fallen.”
“If law is not based on morality, on what can it be based? The rule of law and the common law are in retreat because their moral base is being undermined.”
________________________________
If I am not mistaken, conservatism is steeped in the rule of law, predicated on common broad based values (Judeo-Christian), which have been developed over the centuries.
Currently, there are 48 states that have banned same sex marriage. 29 states have banned same sex marriage in their state constitutions. A large majority of those states have banned same sex marriage through ballot initiatives. The voters made those choices. I would consider that to be “common broad based values.” Does that mean that those voters have “issues”?
I am aware that you have strong libertarian “leanings, and, also understand that you have not come to any definite conclusions on some issues. Stating that the government has no place in the issue of marriage is a definite position. Believing that the rule of law should be based on common broad based moral principles, does not make me big government, however, I am not anti-government. Until that utopia of universal traditional moral values and principles exists in 100% of the population, and moral relativism (excuses) no longer exists, I will adhere to the belief in the rule of law. Laws cannot exist without government.
I’m sorry for you that you found the need to stoop to saying I had issues, simply because I disagreed with you, and stated my reasons why.
Scope you attacked me personally first, you mocked
Doc Holliday (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 3:34PM EST (link)when you said “no rules”, right Doc?
Secondly, I support same sex marriage laws but I keep hearing about losses and continued attacks on those laws. I offered the idea that we could stop the left by no longer allowing the government to issue marriage licenses.
I only said you had issues when you implied people in mental institutions should not be allowed to marry. I found that blanket statement was kind of cruel and dictatorial. Aaron Gardner seemed to feel the same way. He mentioned Sanger, if you don’t know about Margaret Sanger, check her out.
As far as I am concerned, the argument is over Scope, no hard feelings.
Molon Labe!
Oh no no Doc-
Scope (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:18PM EST (link)To say “no laws, no rules, right? cannot be deemed a personal attack by any stretch of the imagination.
I didn’t think I had to state exactly what mental illnesses would qualify for my statement, but, rather gave credit to those reading to understand those that I was referring to. I’m sorry you miunderstood it as a blanket statement.
I am very well aware of Margaret Sanger, and her initiative to abort the unworthy. The reference to Sanger, in relation to anything I said, was nothing more than flame throwing. The only surprise with Gardner’s comment was that he didn’t also include that I probably agreed with Hitler’s Aryan soldiers cleaning up the imperfect also. Or, that I thought Zeke Emmanuel’s population control ideas are on the right track. That is why my response to his comment was simply- “Pathetic.” Follow the blue lines.
Now the “debate” is over. No hard feelings.
Scope, I have never called anyone a nazi, check you premise.
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:32PM EST (link)You did make a blanket statement. You have since clarified. Issue resolved.

Scope (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 7:19PM EST (link)You are also using the “blanket statement” as an excuse. As Doc used you as a support to his argument, I will include rbdwiggins argument concerning “competency” which seemed to be well understood in the context of the debate. I really didn’t think that each mental illness needed to be identified in the context of the statement I made. That is unless you need a prop.
I would be willing to apologize for compromise sake, if you are willing to apologize to me for invoking Sanger. That was deplorable, and, as I said, nothing more than flame throwing.
Scope, as has been noted many times before, you are a moron.

Gay "Marriage" is the left's effort to diminish Traditional Marriage and Traditional Values
conservos (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 4:06PM EST (link)Remember also, that whatever children they raise — via IVF, sex-with-a-friend or adoption — they indoctrinate and use to saturate American culture with “gay acceptance.”
Or, they indoctrinate our children because they don’t have their own, through the schools, etc.
This is called hijacking society’s values.
And then it becomes a “right” to be lorded over conservatives who want to raise their families in a traditional way .. to the point where we’re walking on eggshells, lest we be “offensive.”
Too bad for that!
If this Bob Bennett isn’t going to speak up, he needs to get the heck out of the way.

Anyone?

Traditional marriage ...
merkinmuffley Friday, March 5th at 3:44AM EST (link)… how far back do you want to go?
- no marriage between men and women of different “races” (miscegenation)?
- husband is allowed to beat his wife?
- wife can’t claim that she is raped by her husband?
wife can’t sign contracts without husband’s permission?
How many wives did Abraham have?
Should older people who are way past child-bearing age be allowed to marry? Should sterile people with a criminal record be allowed to marry (they can neither bear nor legally adopt children)? Should people who simply HATE kids be allowed to marry?
What IS marriage? Besides the definition that each church and faith defines SEPARATELY, at the state level it is simply a contract that gives another person certain rights and responsibilities with respect to another person’s life, health and property.
If you are REALLY interested in defending marriage, you should be lobbying to criminalize adultery. THAT is the real threat to marriage. Isn’t is self-evident? At least end the so-called no-fault divorce. If a wife or husband knows they could lose EVERYTHING if they are caught cheating, don’t you think that would strengthen marriage?
You a throwback??
conservos (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 10:09AM EST (link)How far do YOU want to go?
Are you ready to open the door to throwbacks of society?
– multiple spouses
– bethroals and underage marriage as young as 12? 10?
– marriage between different species? everyone loves their dog, why not marry him?
beastiality exists, let’s legitimize it!!
Quit with your Staw Man arguments. No social conservative wants government intrusion.
It’s the Gay-Lesbian Propagandist Machine that wants government involvement.
One party, one vote.
Work from within.
Then the best argument is ...
merkinmuffley Friday, March 5th at 10:17PM EST (link)… NO government recognition of marriage, as others on here have argued.
However, contracts between individuals have to be enforced by SOME entity. Who should it be? The Lord High Grand Poohbah?
Without the marriage contract, individuals would have to draw up numerous documents that would define inheritance, end-of-life issues, property, etc. Instead of the hundreds, maybe thousands of contracts that two individuals would have to draw up in order to create a committed, legal partnership, we have a single, simple tidy document – the marriage license.
I have a good friend who was with his life-partner, his de-facto husband for more than 20 years. When his partner suddenly became ill, my friend was refused visitation at the hospital per his partner’s children’s insistence. His partner died, and my friend was forced to move out of the house they had shared for almost 20 years. Why? Because his partner’s children wanted to sell it.
Now, it could be argued that they should have drawn up power-of-attorney documents, living wills, etc. But they were just regular, working-class guys who kept putting that off (as many of us do when faced with seemingly complex legal documents).
If they were an opposite-sex couple, even if they had never gotten legally married, the state would have recognized their relationship as a common-law marriage, and my friend would have been with his partner in his last days and not been thrown out on the street.
Please explain to me how this was right and fair.
Explain to me why you would prefer to nullify every marriage in the country b/c your gay friends were irresponsible.
conservos (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 8:57AM EST (link)Plenty of irresponsible straight people as well, who leave their children penniless and in the care of the state.
But before you lobby the White House and demand for the dissolution of countless valid marriages, demand that Congress and the White House allow failing businesses to go bankrupt.
Irresponsibility gets its own reward — no one else is responsible for it.
This applies to your friends, I’m sorry.
One party, one vote.

hickorystick (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 2:30AM EST (link)This congressional tracking site summarizes the situation:
“Last year, the Washington D.C. city council twice voted to recognize same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia. According to the District’s charter, Congress has 30 legislative days to prevent this from happening by passing a resolution.”
Bennetts approach was summarized:
“”Another Utah lawmaker, Sen. Bob Bennett [R, UT] tried a different approach to stop legalized gay marriage. Bennet’s S.2980 would let D.C. residents vote on gay marriage in a Proposition 8-style referendum. This idea, however, has been struck down multiple times in court.
