Why does Harry Reid hate the unemployed?

Why does Harry Reid hate the unemployed? Why does he want people to starve?

Why does Harry Reid hate highway projects? Why does he want people to tear up their cars hitting potholes?

It’s true. The evidence is in the Senate on the floor right now.

Jim Bunning does not want to vote for the unemployment extension plus highway bill without knowing where the money is coming from. He has, consequently, objected to unanimous consent for passage.

All Harry Reid has to do is bring the bill to the floor for an actual vote. All he needs is 51 votes for this, unlike the health care bill.

Can Harry Reid not get 51 Democrats to fund unemployment benefits? That’s all he needs. But he won’t bring the bill up for an actual vote. He wants all 100 Senators to go along with it.

That won’t happen.

So Harry Reid is holding the unemployed hostage for a photo-op. It’s like the President bringing reporters along to take pictures of the coffins unloading at Dover Air Force Base — crass and political, but devoid of substance.

Why does Harry Reid hate the unemployed so much that he’d hold them hostage for a photo-op?

That includes Alexander and Corker in Tennessee. Bunning has a backbone. That’s how you do it.

Unfortunately, it sounds like most of his republican peers are applying rino pressure to Bunning right now and causing him to cave. It’s ok, what’s a billion here and there??

Extended unemployment benefits raise unemployment by 1% to 2%

Beaglescout (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:07PM EST (link)

Companies don’t want to hire people only to have to lay them off and pay unemployment “insurance” for the next 18 months. So instead of hiring people in the midst of this economic upheaval they are making do with the personnel they have already. It is the extension of unemployment insurance that has put the capstone on the unemployment rate, just as three consecutive yearly increases in the minimum wage laid its foundation.

as usual the press is more interested in what makes the GOP look bad rather than the truth

bk (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:11PM EST (link)

The press makes nary a mention that Reid can bring it up like a normal bill but doesn’t want to because 1) adding $10,000,000,000 to the deficit is so trivial that it’s not even worth discussing and 2) he thinks this makes a good photo op. The only outrage in the press is that Bunning didn’t let reporters follow him into an area reserved for Senators. Can you imagine a reporter and cameraman from Fox busting into the elevator with Schumer or Durbin? They’d be arrested by the Capitol Police quicker than you can say ‘dirtbag’.

Dems look bad, not the Reps

Ron Robinson (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 3:17PM EST (link)

I think this makes the dems look bad. Although the Reps do look bad by trying to chastise Bunning for this…)

Net vector: dems still look bad.

Bill S (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:17PM EST (link)

The general public doesn’t understand the difference here. There is almost no coverage of the fact that the bill could be brought to vote rather than being approved by unanimous consent. The press is doing exactly what bk says. They may look bad to US, but we’re not the ones that need to be convinced.

This is a great political move by Reid. Erick’s post is correct, of course, but being right is different than making a case for the press.

Republican Leadership(cough) could help the situation

Michael Dugas (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:30PM EST (link)

By supporting Bunning and explaining that it’s not about denying anyone their unemployment benefits but about getting Congress to follow their own rules and have it payed for.
People aren’t that stupid but if all they hear is one side and see no support for Bunning then they really won’t know the difference.
Reid is chastising Bunning for demanding they follow their own PayGo legislation that Bunning didn’t even vote for, we need to be out there screaming at Reid for NOT following PayGo legislation that he DID vote for and vocally supported! As long as Bunning is left spinning in the wind as the sole voice standing up for what is a big part of what the Republicans are complaining about, un-financed out of control spending, then they are as complicit as the Dems in it.
And don’t be fooled for a minute, all this bill needs is 51 votes and Reid has them, he wants this out there to make Republicans look bad as if they want to deny people their unemployment bennies.

Bunning sticks his thumb in the eye of his party

newsflash (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:14PM EST (link)

Feel free to correct my history here: The Republican powers tell Bunning last year in no uncertain terms that they aren’t interested in supporting his reelection. Bunning is well peeved and decides to not run for reelection. On the way out the door Bunning decides to “go maverick” and hold up federal money for unemployment benefits. He says his actions are in the interest of combating the deficit, but Bunning had hitherto not been much of a deficit hawk. Bunning did, however, see a convenient opportunity to wreck some havoc on a party that had abandoned him and was starting to reconnect with the working classes who have been disappointed with Obama.

I may be wrong, and I’m sure you’ll call me out if so, but that’s how I see it.

newsflash (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:38PM EST (link)

I am not opposed to standing on principle, but I’m not aware of any such record of standing on principle with regard to deficit reduction from Sen. Bunning. So either we’re witnessing an epiphany, or something else is at work here. My previous post was an attempt to identify that something else. Again, I invite correction here if you got it.

Perpetual war is great and all, but who’s going to pay for it?

Bunning is *not* holding up unemployment benefits

eburke (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:59PM EST (link)

and he’s not filibustering it either no matter what you hear from the LSM. He’s merely insisting that Congress abide by the PayGo law they passed just a couple of weeks ago. He simply wants to make sure it’s paid for. He has done so by proposing that unspent stimulus funds be used to pay for the benefits.

If Harry cared so much for the unemployed, he’d bring this puppy to the floor in a heartbeat. It could either be Bunnings proposal or he could just bring his party’s *own* proposal to the floor ’cause it would only need 51 votes to pass.

It is *Reid* that’s delaying the extension…not Bunning.

It’s not as if he just woke up to fiscal restraint. Plus is there something irresponsible about not wanting to authorize spending that Democrats are pulling from their endless printing press at the Treasury Department?

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Faux-moderates like Collins who sell out principled colleagues like Bunning in order to burnish their own credentials should be shunned.

GOP Needs To Reform Unemployment Benefits

crosley (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:35PM EST (link)

The Democrats really think they have us over a barrel with unemployment benefits, but slowly this temporary assistance is slowly becoming de facto welfare that’s going to bankrupt us. I think more and more people are starting to realize this also, and are really resenting it. Unemployment benefits should last no more than 3-4 months (and that’s being generous).

Isn’t amazing how quickly people are able to find jobs once their unemployment benefits run out?

At the very least, Republicans should make Democrats actually vote for these bills. I commend Bunning on his backbone.

Exactly

Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:45PM EST (link)

Make them vote for it. Make them either identify what they cut to fund it, or directly violate their own PayGo Rule.

With the current unemployment rate

eastbaylarry (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 9:06PM EST (link)

Statements like “Isn’t amazing how quickly people are able to find jobs once their unemployment benefits run out? ” are thoughtless. This is the kind of talking point the progressives love to find in order to _wrongly_ brand the entire republican party as heartless.

Personally, I’m NOT in favor of extending unemployment benefits because it DOES become defacto welfare. And also personally, I might be expected to be on the other side of this issue since I have been without work for 32 months.

But the point here is, Bunning was right. And the MSM never mentioned that little fact. According to the brand new PayGo, passing the bill would be a violation.

2+2=4 dammit!

But the high unemployment is partly due

GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:36AM EST (link)

to people getting the benefits for over 2 years. So you cannot say they won’t get jobs because the rate is high. They may be unemployed partly/mostly because the benefits are being paid.

fideist Tuesday, March 2nd at 2:47PM EST (link)

Remember? More than half of the stimulus still has not been spent. The Dems and Obama are waiting until right before the 2010 elections to release the rest of it. For political reasons they are keeping the economy slow and people out of work!

mustango (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 3:04PM EST (link)

It’s fun and all landing rhetorical jabs at Reid over this, but what’s really going on here that’s preventing a vote? Not enough senators in town or something? I’m not buying that Reid wouldn’t have simply gone through the motions of a vote by now if it were as simple as that. As much as the media is covering for him I have to think Reid is personally embarrassed to be outmaneuvered like this.
