Bob Bennett Must Go: He Supports Amnesty

In a Utah debate, Bob Bennett admitted to supporting amnesty.

The challengers also attacked Bennett on immigration. Lee, for example, said, “I would vote against any form of amnesty. I wish I could say the same of the incumbent senator,” who Lee said did vote for it.

Bennett denied that, saying “amnesty is in the eyes of the beholder.” He said he voted for “heavy fines and legal penalties on anyone here illegally regardless how they came” before allowing them to stay in the country.

In other words, Bennett would make an illegal alien pay cash and then they’d get to stay in the United States on a path to citizenship. That is the definition of amnesty you moron.

Defining Amnesty

bigfix Tuesday, March 2nd at 12:33PM EST (link)

Not wanting to be a “moron” by Erickson’s enlightened standards, I decided to look up the word. Here’s what I found:

AMNESTY: 1. a general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
2. Law. an act of forgiveness for past offenses, esp. to a class of persons as a whole.
3. a forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

I didn’t see any reference to” heavy fines and legal penalties,” which Erickson assures me is the REAL definition. I also searched in vain for any citation of Senator Bennett’s admission that he supported amnesty.

Sorry, who’s the moron again?

What took you so long?

ceili_dancer (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 12:52PM EST (link)

Did Sen Bennett have a long lunch session so you couldn’t respond in time or were you still getting your marching orders/programming maybe the download was longer than expected. The amnesty is for cutting in front of all of the persons trying to enter the country legally. a cash fine is nothing when you have broken the law and are able to stay in the country without incarceration or deportation. If you’re looking up definitions in the dictionary, look up the difference of legal and illegal immigration.

Lunch was delightful; thank you for asking!

Robert Bennett is a conservative

mavericktime Tuesday, March 2nd at 3:14PM EST (link)

I’m thinking that Erick must be getting paid by the Mike Lee campaign or by Club for Growth or some other conservative purist group, because Robert Bennett is a conservative Republican by most people’s standards.

I’m wondering if there is some connection between Erick’s animus toward Bennett and Senator Bennett’s cooperation with Democrat Ron Wyden to come up with by far the most comprehensive, pro-individual, and highly acclaimed health care reform measure that has come out thus far. But then, why would Erick be opposed to a bill that might really go a long way toward solving our health care problems in this country?

Conservative???

utah_1 Tuesday, March 2nd at 4:46PM EST (link)

How is a federal mandate for health insurance conservative? How is tax payer funded abortions Conservative? How is Medicare Part D Conservative? How is a long line of “pragmatism” actually Conservative?

How is being on Bennett’s payroll and coming to a blog about your boss on the taxpayer dime, conservative?

Calm down, Connor

This morning for breakfast, Momma had the corn flakes, but I had Crunch Berries. I find the sugar invigorating, certainly more so than limp ad hominem nonsense.

By the way, do you really want answers to this?

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:28AM EST (link)

Because this strikes me as angry, dishonest rhetoric that’s just designed to kick up dust.

But, being the great guy I am, I’ll answer it anyway!

1) The Healthy Americans Act would have ended Medicaid entirely; it would have eliminated all possibility of a so-called “public option;” it would have put all health care in the hands of the private sector. Aren’t those conservative ideas?

2) Senator Bennett does not support taxpayer abortions. In fact, he has vigorously fought against taxpayer-funded abortions for his entire career. To claim otherwise is to be blatantly dishonest.

3) Medicare Part D provided a 21st Century update to a 1960s medical system, allowing preventive medicine to be covered in order to stave off the necessity of much more expensive hospital visits. Consequently, it has resulted in a net savings in Medicare costs. Isn’t that conservative?

4) You’re right. Pragmatism is for communists.

Really?

utah_1 Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:43AM EST (link)

1) The Healthy Americans Act has unconstitutional federal mandates. Once you realize that, anything after that is NOT Conservative.

2) The Healthy Americans Act not only uses tax payer money to fund abortions, it also allows for same sex couples benefits. Sounds Conservative to me.

3) The largest expansion of entitlement spending in more than my lifetime and you call that Conservative? And since your answer is the exact same as Bob’s, I bet that you are his son Jim answering these questions. But let’s remember, the total current unfunded liability from Medicare Part D is $16.6 tril. Please explain again how that is Conservative Jim?

Happy to, Connor.

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:55AM EST (link)

1) Senator Bennett supports taking the argument about mandates to the courts to determine their constitutionality. Once you realize that the Constitution gives the judiciary branch to determine what is and is not constitutional, you’re back in the America the Founders intended.

2) The Healthy Americans Act explicitly preserves the Hyde Amendment language that forbids taxpayer money to be used for abortions. Senator Bennett has consistently voted for every piece of legislation that would prevent taxpayer money from being used for abortions. To suggest otherwise is a blatant lie.

3) I am not only his son, Jim, I’m also his wife, Betty. It required some messy surgery, but it’s done wonderful things for my hair. It also demonstrates that I could be his dog, Elvis, and it still wouldn’t matter to the substance of my argument, which you seem to think can be invalidated by attacking the messenger. (And I prefer to be called Jimmy. Or Betty. Whichever works.)

As for “largest expansion of entitlement spending in more than my lifetime,” you’re still a young man, Connor. So you may not recognize that cost savings actually SHRINK the amount of money being spent on Medicare. Sure, it’s not the same as your guy Lee’s ludicrous proposal to completely end 100% of all Social Security benefits but still require people to pay payroll taxes, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Have you taken a look at the 10th Amendment lately?

tcgeol (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:08PM EST (link)

If you look at the Constitution very carefully, you might observe that a mandate to have health insurance isn’t one of the powers granted to the federal government.

If Senator Bennett believes that the courts have the powers to determine constitutionality of something that directly ties into the 9th and 10th amendments, that is more than enough reason to directly oppose him.

Just your typical bitter gun- and God-clinger

Even the Left admits we’re Right

I took a look at it last Thursday.

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:09PM EST (link)

It said something very different yesterday. It said something like “tcgeol has a direct link to James Madison’s wisdom, so ignore hundreds of years of judicial precedent.”

I’ll look today, though, and get back to you. If I feel like it.

My main beef here is Erickson's blatant lie

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:21AM EST (link)

“In a Utah debate, Bob Bennett admitted to supporting amnesty.”

Then Erickson quotes a paragraph where Bennett explicitly denies supporting amnesty.

Only in Bizarro world is a denial an admission.

Bigfix, Bennett's answer wasn't that explicit

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:28AM EST (link)

Bennett just basically said he didn’t believe that what he would do should be called amnesty.

He supports the same policies as those which have been branded as amnesty, he just thinks we shouldn’t call it that, probably because amnesty is a big time loser politically.

But don’t be fooled, what he is offering is still amnesty.

conform and celebrate diversity….or else!!!

“We’d be much better off if We The People had desired small government enough to keep it.” acat

That's a separate argument

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:57AM EST (link)

Bennett never admitted to supporting amnesty and, indeed, vigorously denied it. What you’re saying is that you have issues with the definition Bennett is using. That’s a legitimate discussion – anjd I think you’re wrong on the point – but that’s not the argument Erickson makes at the top of this post.

It's not a separate argument at all bigfix...

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:09AM EST (link)

You accused Erick of blatantly lying about Bennett. That was totally untrue. Is Erick working from a different definition of amnesty than you and Bennett? Yes, but that doesn’t make Erick a liar.

Quit being a hack.

conform and celebrate diversity….or else!!!

“We’d be much better off if We The People had desired small government enough to keep it.” acat

Sorry. I can't quit hackery.

bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:03PM EST (link)

I’ve used the Hackotine Patch, but the cravings remain. So I still marvel at your eagerness to attack me instead of address the argument. So quit being a scoob.

As for lying, it’s Erick being Clintonian, not me. Bennett never admitted to supporting amnesty. Indeed, in the money quote Erick puts up on the site, it says Bennett “denied that.” So, in plain terms, Erick is lying.

When I point that out, you come back with “it depends on what your definition of ‘amnesty’ is.”

As soon as I find out what “is” is, I’ll let you know.

You are right about one thing, you can't quit being a hack.

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:17PM EST (link)

Bennett denied that, saying “amnesty is in the eyes of the beholder.” He said he voted for “heavy fines and legal penalties on anyone here illegally regardless how they came” before allowing them to stay in the country.

Bennett engaged in the definition of “is” argument as his immediate defense of his support of amnesty. Also notice the second portion of bolded text, which directly contradicts your defense of him here

It would fin the illegal aliens, force them to return to their own country before applying for citizenship, and then put them in the back of the line.

You are a liar and a hack and you have been exposed as such.

To everyone else on the thread, it is time we called Hinz Rule on bigfix.

So Erickson did not lie but you are obviously a lemming of Bennetts and you prefer to call into question Erick but I call into question your ability to use your brain to use the critical thinking skills one must have to listen to politicians. bigfix Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:01AM EST (link)

Despite my lack of critical thinking skills, I’m capable of seeing that all Erick did was regurgitate Lee’s empty accusation of amnesty, couch it in a lie, and then ignore the fact that Bennett ably deflected the spurious charge.

You are so blind as to NOT see that Bennett is about giving....

A United States Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card (due to its color in the earlier versions), is an identification card attesting to the “permanent resident status of an alien in the United States of America.” Green card also refers to an immigration process of becoming a permanent resident. The green card serves as proof that its holder, a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), has been officially granted immigration benefits, which include permission to reside and take employment in the USA. The holder must maintain permanent resident status, and can be removed from the US if certain conditions of this status are not met.

How about this one from dictionary dot.com:
am·nes·ty
? ?/?æmn?sti/ Show Spelled [am-nuh-stee] Show IPA noun,plural-ties, verb,-tied, -ty·ing.
–noun
1.
a general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
2.
Law. an act of forgiveness for past offenses, esp. to a class of persons as a whole.
3.
a forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

Allowing between 10 and 20 million illegal aliens to pay a fine, and stay, is amnesty. See #3, “forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.”

Or are you one of those folks who think like Bill Clinton and started redefining words on the witness stand….

Mr. Erickson does not post anything that he cannot back up. His own RS contributors and members would note it immediately. Bill Bennet’s squishiness is what people are going after, and hopefully will see him gone next election. And to your friend above, Michael J, nothing wrong with fining people, if that is the legal thing to do, it is what follows that fine. He didn’t note the “all is forgiven” plan in there. If you can say “fine” them and send them back and make them take their turn, legally, in line….that would be another story.

Convicting someone of a crime and asking them to pay a fine and tell them to leave the country and then get in the back of the citizenship line doesn’t overlook anything. It’s certainly not amnesty.

Specifically, S. 2611 would: reward approximately 10.2 million illegal aliens with an amnesty allowing them to permanently take American jobs and become U.S. citizens; entice millions more foreign workers to illegally enter our communities, crowd the housing and schools, take the jobs and depress the wages because they reasonably can believe they eventually will be given an amnesty, too; double legal immigration from 1 million to 2 million a year; give out permanent green cards to up to 66 million foreign workers and dependents over the next 20 years. The main difference in terms of numbers between the final version of S. 2611 and the version of the bill when the cloture motion was invoked was that the Bingaman Amendment to cap the number of employment-based visas for workers, spouses and children at 650,000 was adopted after cloture but before final passage. Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation estimates that the Bingaman Amendment would reduce employment-based visas available under S. 2611 by about 150,000 a year. S. 2611 passed by a vote of 62 to 36.

I’m kind of soused, but here it goes:

That quote is from a website that woefully misrepresents the bill in question. Nowhere in that bill is there any language that would “reward approximately 10.2 million illegal aliens with an amnesty allowing them to permanently take American jobs and become U.S. citizens.” It would fin the illegal aliens, force them to return to their own country before applying for citizenship, and then put them in the back of the line.

I don’t accept your premise.

So if you’ll excuse me, Bob and I are off to catch a flick and then go shoot some mailboxes.

Your fix is big but your ice is thin. Stop acting like a jackass on this thread or you’ll find yourself fast on your way to some obscure blog to whine about your unfair banning. You’ve earned exactly zero credibility in your time on this site (9 days) and your one overriding concern (Bennett). So do start acting like a grown-up, hmm?
