Your Call: Will Moderates Take Over?

I want and need you to pay serious attention to this.

The Los Angeles Times is running a story today about the rising tide of moderates sweeping into the GOP. This will only happen if you let it.

Rep. Michael N. Castle, one of the most liberal Republicans in the House, is heavily favored to win an open Senate seat in Delaware.

Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, handily won the party’s primary despite opposition from conservatives.

Other centrist Senate candidates — such as former Reps. Tom Campbell in California and Rob Simmons in Connecticut, and Gov. Charlie Crist in Florida — still face conservative opposition in primary contests that are seen as battles for the ideological soul of the party.

But more is at stake. Additional moderates in the Senate could provide a more durable foundation for breaking logjams than any White House summit or lecture on bipartisanship.

What this means is, frankly, the GOP will not only keep compromising in favor of bigger government but will do it with gusto. That’s why we need a field of strong conservatives in the Senate. That’s why I support Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund.

It’s also why we need to rally behind some strong conservatives in primaries in the order of those primaries:

May

Marlin Stutzman (IN)
Pat Toomey (PA)

June

Chuck DeVore (CA)
Mike Lee (UT)1
Danny Tarkanian (NV)

August

Ken Buck (CO)
Marco Rubio (FL)

These candidates will deliver change we can believe in. I know a few of you have preferred candidates, but I trust this list. It is not comprehensive of all the races. But these are the races we can win if we rally now.

  1. Utah will havea convention in May. If Bob Bennett does not get 60% of the vote in the convention, there will be a primary in June. If, however, Mike Lee gets 60% of the vote in the convention, there will be no primary and Mike Lee will be the GOP nominee.

Look, I am not against moderates, because they have a place..but their place is in the fringe of the Republican party, not at the heart of it. They are the most liberal extremes of what is barely acceptable in the conservative movement.

We should focus on conservatives where ever and when ever possible. If we can trade a moderate for a conservative (ala Bennett) we should.

This isn’t about purity of the party. It is about determining the direction of the party. Moderates have their place…but they are not the core or heart of our movement.

EE’s diary is about not supporting moderates in the primaries, and, then you comment as one of those moderates. I know not everyone agrees on everything, but, this comment on this diary seems at odds with Erick’s point.

I'm not responding to Erick at all.

I’m putting a face on the nebulous ‘moderate’ that selected individuals want to dismiss as ‘fringe.’ If you want to, fine. Start with me.

I mean this when I say the same thing:

I’m glad Scott Brown is in the Senate. He’s the best we can hope for in a socialist utopia such as MA, but he does not belong in leadership positions.

I hope our leadership includes him in conversations, I hope he votes for us when he can, however, I hope our leadership doesn’t tailor the R position to Scott Brown’s position because he’s really on the outside edge (fringe).

And technically, your support for SSM and immigration reform puts you on the outside edge as well. I’m glad you vote with us when you can due to our support for national defense and economic freedom, but I hope the party doesn’t move all the way over to the left in hopes that it will pick up all those votes between me and them because it will sure lose me and a lot of others as well.

Moe...One or two issues doesn't make you a moderate in this context IMHO

AceInTX (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 10:41PM EST (link)

I wouldn’t classify you as a Mike Castle, Mark Kirk, Charlie Crist moderate. I agree with your positions and posts far more often than not.

I have a reputation as a purist because I don’t spend enough time ironing out the subtleties in what I mean when I call someone a RINO and I definitely wouldn’t put you in that category.

I’m saying that to say, the people EE is talking about…and the ones I spend so much time raising cane about are the militant moderates, (they are actually far left liberals in the Republican Party) like the people and Erick are pointing out as in your face liberals who attack conservatives ceaselessly and have made it their mission to undermine the Party, the Party Platform, the Conservative base of the Party and who insist on forcing a radical environmentalist, pro big government, pro abortion agenda on a party that is supposed to stand for small government, pro life, fiscally responsible government.

The “Big Tent” analogy isn’t the correct one…the correct one is a MAGNET…we need to be a MAGNET that draws these independents in who are sick and tired of what’s going on in WashingtonFred Thompson

The "place" for Moderates

Brian_Roastbeef (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 10:10AM EST (link)

is where we absolutely can’t get conservatives. Its why I give Scott Brown a pass for his jobs bill vote, and why I fully support Mike Castle in Delaware.

In a state like Utah though, there is no reason that we should be settling for a Bob Bennett. Its a state where Republicans regularly break 60%. Give us a true conservative there.

Blue states will more often breed moderates. I accept that; call me a realist, call me a squish. DeVore only stands a chance if California is truly moving away from the Democrats. Otherwise we may end up having to settle for Campbell as lesser of two evils over Fiorina. Too early to give up the fight now, though.

In red states and swing states, conservative candidates are what we need to win. Especially swing states – you’ll find conservatives run far better in the general election there than moderates who can’t establish a difference between themselves and the Democrat incumbent…

More MSM Picking 'Their' Candidates

racebannon (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 9:49AM EST (link)

Like they did with McCain in 08. Go back and look at how much more favorable coverage he got over the other primary candidates (which of course went away once MSM was able to shape the primary outcomes to their liking and had the weakest “Republican” vs. the Chosen One).

Doing the same dance now in fear of the rising conservatism. Over the last 10 days there has been a spike in coverage/commentary on how the ‘shrill,’ ‘hate-inspiring,’ ‘extremist,’ ‘racist’ etc factions of the ‘Tea Party Right’ (which is of course, according to MSM, the refuge of extremist, racist, shrill, hate inspiring disgruntled white America’) are “infiltrating” the Republican party.

This is part of a continued attempt to smear the right as unthinking, Neanderthals. Look no further than Frank Rich’s recent piece in the Sunday NTY, the general reporting of the Tea Party movement over the last three weeks – or even the stunned copy post WH Health Care kibuki where the MSM was shocked that the Republicans had, uh, like, a rational message (the implication: “It’s a ruse! We all know they are knuckle-dragging neo-fascists!).

The tenor and tone of this will only increase in the next few months. The idea is “Smear and Fear” – hopefully scaring the electorate to 1) vote for moderates in the primaries; failing that to paint the Dems as the “moderates” in the general elections.

The best, effective response is repeating the simple, straightforward conservative messages of “Cut Federal spending,” “Lower taxes,” “Create a better environment for small businesses,” and “Reduce waste in government.”

Centrists

We’re preparing a story on the Tea Party – which we don’t like! – and will publish it shortly. In the meantime, your Readers might consider joining our new Centrists Group at Linked In and might like to look at our new blog for and about Centrists, The Rest of U.S.

Extremists have become so loud, they’re deafening. And because they shout in perfect sound bites, the media birddog their every rant, however irresponsible or outrageous.

But we believe the political tide’s about to turn with a vengeance. No matter their party affiliation or lack thereof, Americans are disgusted with those who harass to harass, obstruct to obstruct, tear down to tear down. Compromise, consensus, bridge-building, and respect for differing viewpoints have been the hallmarks of American life as long as there’s been an America. We’re certain they will be again.

Stick around and read a while before passing judgement.

You might find that those “extremists” on the right actually have the same values that you have. Especially the values you expressed on your web site as “liberal” values:

“At the same time, most Americans see themselves as “liberal” in the sense of supporting freedom of expression, freedom of religious belief, and freedom to pursue our separate and equal forms of “happiness,” provided they’re legal, moral, and non-fattening.”

You’ll find that the only thing that the conservative movement is extreme about and agrees on is the freedoms that you ascribe to liberals. In fact those are “liberal” values in the traditional definition. Unfortunately, the current crop of people who use the label “liberal” fit more into the traditional definition of “progressive” which had goals that looked like communism, but supported using gradual incremental change rather than revolution to change the system.

Moderate?

rdelbov Monday, March 1st at 10:49AM EST (link)

Jane Norton Moderate?

You list your endorsement of Ken Buck for Colorado senate in a post calling out moderates. Are you implying Jane Norton is a moderate?

When Reagan brought Jane Norton to work for him in DC she was no moderate.

When Jane Norton was working for Senator Bill Armstrong she was no moderate.

Ronald Reagan and Bill Armstrong helped to build the GOP as a conservative party when most of the posters here were in pre-school-diapers-or in the womb.

Its certainly Erick’s right to endorse who he wants but talking about the Colorado senate race and calling Jane Norton a moderate is just not right.

In fact in several of your endorsements you are choosing among conservatives and not choosing between a moderate and a conservative.

Probably doesn't want to split Conservative vote

How can I help?

Veronica (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 12:13PM EST (link)

My funds are limited. Can you give direction on what else I can do?

Find and blast opposition, RT & promote candiate PACS, postings & blogs?

What else?

Moderates need to go and I’m anxious to start doing my part to promote outside of my state.

I can be effective, but would need points to diseminate. Can y’all direct me to filtered info so I can avoid doing unnecessary legwork, etc?

Thanks in advance!

McCain's bad for conservatism

pburton Tuesday, March 2nd at 5:43AM EST (link)

Today’s hoot to S.F. Examiner:

Editor:

Regarding “McCain’s good for the GOP,” (Letters, March 1), more than 20 million people in this country illegally, and John McCain suggested amnesty. What does that have to do with the rule of law?

Money corrupting political speech, and John McCain authored law that limited speech, law found unconstitutional. What does that have to do with God-given rights?

Employment, housing, health care, education — from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Where does this take property rights?

If Senator McCain is good for the GOP, then conservatives had better find a party less kind to Maverick socialism.

Our economy needs to undergo a radical change if we are to survive as a Nation. This is not the time to make deals with the Marxists.

Earmarks must be eliminated. Everyone needs to pay their fair share of the taxes necessary to balance the budget and pay down the debt. The changes need to be made now and they will be painful; but not as painful as the total collapse of the American economy.

Rand Paul in KY is a TRUE small Government Conservative.

We will know tonight if Debra Medina in Texas will continue the fight.

It amazes me the attacks waged against her, when no one talks about the other candidates negatives.

Medina is not a Truther, but because she said the EXACT SAME THING that Glenn Beck had said a few months ago, he labeled her a Truther. I guess that makes Glenn Beck a Truther then too.

Yesterday they tried to label Debra Medina as not strong on Pro-Life issues because she does not favor Government Regulations. (a resolution that says that women seeking Abortions should be shown the Ultra Sound of there baby)

Ah, Debra is 100% pro life and even has stated what Texas should do to ban Abortions in Texas. (Kay “baby-killer” Huchison is pro choice, Slick Rick Perry favors Abortion in the case of rape, that is not 100% pro life)

The Texas Republican Platform calls for an end to Property Taxes and that Consumption Taxes are the preferred taxing method. However when that is Debra’s main platform plank, she is attacked on it. (so who is the real republican?)

“There are some who’ve forgotten why we have a military. It’s not to promote war; it’s to be prepared for peace.”

We got another one here for you guys in Wisconsin. The media is moving heaven and earth to convince that spineless RINO’tard Tommy Thompson to run against Russ-ama Feingold-en.

Russ-ama is toast along with most of the rest of the Commissariat here (although they are leaving an almost unbreakable Marxist legislative firewall of catastrophe mandates for our futures on the way out).

There are good candidates here running to replace both the utterly corrupt “Bingo” Jim Doyle and Russ-ama (not to mention a whole bunch of the state legislature), but there is the same sort of centrist weasel “bipartisanship and Kumbaya” sect as well that is part of the problem just like those in DC causing issues….like Thompson.

On that subject please Lord, somebody get rid of Nancy (Lindsey) “CARBON TAX” Graham!!!

True peace between two enemies has only ever been acheived when one side has utterly defeated the other…if you doubt this truth visit Nagasaki sometime.

You never know what you'll get with a moderate!

bs61 Tuesday, March 2nd at 9:08PM EST (link)

And we need to rid ourselves of them in 2010 and beyond. I think that most progressives are moderates and are sneaky, and do not stand up for their own radical agenda, They don’t start their own party which would be defeated, instead they infiltrate both parties.

I don’t believe that McCain is out to destroy our constitution, howerver, as an AZ voter, I will not be supporting him – not after TARP, not of his supporting Amnesty in my border state, instead of upholding the rule of laws.

They move us further to the left, but at a much slower pace. Or when you get that feeling like why the heck did they support that really enormous change, their a RINO.

If people want moderates, maybe they really are not Rep or Dems, maybe their an independent, or Lib, but pick another party and leave mine alone.

Wisconsin does have a conservative choice.

wis912tb Wednesday, March 3rd at 2:18AM EST (link)

As mentioned previously, Tommy Thompson is considering throwing his hat in the ring. This would be a mistake, as it would be more of the same Washington insider thinking.

There is an alternative in Wisconsin. Dave Westlake (davewestlake.org) is a down-to-earth, honest individual who has the Constitution at the heart of his campaign. He is a West Point graduate who subscribes deeply to his values of Duty, Honor, Country. As in Massachusetts, this is the peoples’ seat, and Dave is committed to that. He deserves to get as much attention as has been devoted to Marco Rubio in Florida, and the other conservative candidates on Erick’s list.

We can start to reverse the socialistic trend that has evolved in Wisconsin by electing Dave Westlake.

No more 'Me too' moderates

vocalyokel Wednesday, March 3rd at 4:21AM EST (link)

Great- -just what this country needs- -more moderates. Let’s all join the lurch to the Left. Not! For the republican party to do what the democrat party should be doing, i.e. “moderate”, at this juncture is pure folly. It’s akin to the lemmings running for the stern of the HMS Titanic, as that seems to be trendy.
Never mind that the ship of state is going down, fast…McCain, Bob Bennett, Tim Pawlenty, et. al. should be retired to, as Reagan quipped, the scrap heap of history.
