Jim Lee is a businessman, not a politician, lawyer, or academic, who has been with the Tea Party movement since inception, having participated in both the Feb ’09 and April ’09 Greenville SC Tea Party protests. After asking himself “Who will stand up to oppose RINO Bob Inglis in our district?” he announced his candidacy. Washington holds nothing he desires, except the opportunity be the voice of “We the People” and support fiscal conservatism, personal liberties, and defend the Constitution he passionately loves. I believe that 4 of the 5 Republicans could earn the right to be on the ” list”
but we’ll have to see how this shakes out. When it comes to November it is hard to imagine any Democrat winning a statewide office in Texas.
Michael Williams has to wait awhile
popdaddy Sunday, February 28th at 1:25PM EST (link)I agree it’s another year where no socialist democrat will win in a statewide election in Texas. But there are a lot of riffraff like Edwards and some state legislators that need to be defeated in November. The Texas Legislature meets again January, 2011, a voter photo ID law should be the #1 priority.
Perry has done an excellent job of portraying Kay Barely as the carpetbagger from Washington DC she is. However, I seriously doubt KBR ever leaves DC until she is defeated in a primary. Mr. Williams will need to wait on the endorsement list for a couple of more years.

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 3:11PM EST (link)Most of us provide links when refering to someones statements. By all accounts, Daniels himself is unsure if he has the heart. I believe if he does enter the race, it will be because he has decided that he does.
Besides, does every worthy candidate have to walk in lockstep with CPAC?

GopTiger Sunday, February 28th at 3:21PM EST (link)No, not every candidate has to march in lock step with CPAC (whatever that means-lol- considering the great variety of conservative views represented at CPAC).
But when Daniels dismissed CPAC by saying “there was a lot of rowdyism and barbs cast at the other side” and “that is not my lane” he sounds a bit too much like the David Frums and Brookes of the world. Frankly, I am glad that there are people FIRED up about Obama’s all out socialist assault on the country, but apparently thats just not Mitch’s style. I guess he prefers the parlor debates of Peggy Noonan’s salon.

GopTiger Sunday, February 28th at 3:33PM EST (link)Maybe I wasn’t supposed to mention that Daniels-the grand chief executive that no one can hold a candle to-RAISED TAXES.

Daniels record
GopTiger Sunday, February 28th at 4:49PM EST (link)The first year Daniels was governor he proposed a 1% tax increase on families with a combined income of $100, 000 or more. Fortunately, it was rejected by the Indiana legislature. Sound familiar?
Like Obama, he raised taxes on cigarettes to pay for his health insurance for the uninsured. Sound familiar?
Daniels signed the a hefty tax increase on the unemployment taxes businesses pay in 2009. It was the largest single tax ever enacted on Indiana businesses.
Daniels did cut the property tax rate but then raised the state’s sales tax from 6 to 7 percent. The Indiana state sales tax is now the SECOND HIGHEST in the nation.
I am not sure how a charismatically impaired Midwestern governor with a decidedly mixed record on taxes is somehow our answer to Obama in 2012.
Are people moving into or out of Indiana
redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 4:53PM EST (link)and are industries moving into or out of Indiana?
I know the answer to both questions for my state which is Illinois.
Lots of the people moving into Indiana are from Illinois. Do you think it is for the weather?
Isn't Indiana one of the few states
Flagstaff (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 5:34PM EST (link)that are weathering this recession reasonable well? Maybe Daniels is supporting the right policies and trade-offs. Any successful governor is ging to have some trade-offs, and if it can be shown that they were the right ones, they don’t hurt much.
I’m not that familiar with Daniels’s record, but in many respects he sounds like a politically more-astute Mitt Romney. He has Romney’s assets (not talking money, here) without his liabilities.
I also think there will be some advantage if the nominee isn’t in the public spotlight until closer to the election. Yet, he needs to be able to get out in front at some point, setting the stage by taking positions on national issues. If he can’t do this early as a governor, he can do it through a surrogate. The surrogate would be in position to accept the VP nomination later.

Interesting Times
GopTiger Sunday, February 28th at 5:56PM EST (link)When a Democrat raises taxes, we all rightly criticize him or her.
When a Republican does it, its now called ‘trade-offs”?
As much as I like Erik and the good folks at redstate, I’m not sure the independents and the tea party folks are going to be able to make this sematic distinction.
The fact that so many of you want to simply ignore the fact Daniels wanted to tax families with combined incomes of 100,000 or more is simply amazing And then Daniels is praised for successfully raising the sales tax to the second highest in the nation is because he at least capped another form of taxation. If Obama tried this kind of trickery, you would be calling for BLOOD, as you SHOULD!
Still, I would hope the GOP could at the very least offer a choice, instead of an echo in 2012. Running a candidate who has not supported quite as many tax increases as Obama is not a recipe for success. But if you think blogging it will make it so, blog on.
Again, I ask you what the net effect has been on Indiana taxation
RedBeard Sunday, February 28th at 7:47PM EST (link)I don’t know that answer, but someome so dedicated to hammering Daniels must have the statistics handy.
As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m not beating the drum for Daniels. But neither am I willing to string him up without some good reasons.

As a resident of an even higher sales tax state, I can assure you that 7% is indeed heading for the stars. But having lived in a different, high property tax state for many years, I’d also rather have the high sales tax and lower property tax.
I’m not a proponent of the FairTax, as such, but a consumption tax has its advantages over a property tax, and it isn’t just theoretical. After the basics are covered, a sales tax can be avoided by reducing purchases. There is no way to avoid a property tax, except by disposing of the property. Friends just sold their motor home, which they used in their business, because CA property taxes on it just went up $2,000 this year.
If you have a problem with Daniels, that’s fine. You’ve said so. It’s a long time to 2012. We’ll see what the residents of Indiana (it’s not clear that you are one of them) think of Daniels in the meantime. I like what I’ve seen of John Thune, too, but I also agree that Senators tend to have trouble in Presidential elections.

Erick- I have a question about Daniels
Scope (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 10:41AM EST (link)It was a little surprising for you to project out to 2012. Are you now, in 2010 getting behind a Republican presidential (possible) nominee so that there is plenty of time to get behind one person early and often? Is it to insure that his name is well known in 2012? The last I heard was that at one time Daniels said no, he wouldn’t consider running. Most recently he said that he would leave the door open a crack. Has that changed?
I understand the philosophy of building up support for a possible candidate, but, I don’t believe that anyone knows who will be on the field, come what was considered normal announcement time, which would be after the 2010 mid-terms. The only people I feel comfortable saying they would definitely run, or have made those overtures, is Romney and probably Pawlenty. I still have doubts about Huckabee, and, I’m probably 50-50 with Palin.
I have no problems with Daniels, as, I don’t know much about him. Erick, now that you have thrown your support behind him, I suspect he will go through a thorough vetting, if he hasn’t already. As I said, I don’t know much about him. Did he ever hire illegals to tend to his garden and landscape, or, did he ever have a child that got a speeding ticket? LOL

WHY THE INFATUATION WITH DANIELS???
RINKER Monday, March 1st at 9:16AM EST (link)As a conservative, this one boggles my mind. He tried to raise income taxes as soon as he became governor, and ridiculed those who criticized him. Totally arrogant. He likes the political game, and was GEORGE W BUSH’S BUDGET DIRECTOR for goodness sake! He defended the enormous ramp up in spending in that role. If he were the principled conservative many claim he is, he would have resigned before defending what lost us our governing majorities.
Besides all that, he has the charisma of Al Gore.

We won't get Obamacare, unless, in the end we haven't the political will to stop it.
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 10:54AM EST (link)Just how many depth charges do we have to have dropped on us before we realize we’re under attack.?
I say this to the GOP but also conservatives at large.
1.) True, they can probably pass a bill, get it signed, but will likely have to break a law or two to do it. Then there’s the BIG LAWS, i.e., the Constitution being broken,
2) Then they will have to implement it. All the Congress will implement will be the the hikes until 2013. The Executive may make a run for implementation via executive fiat, but there goes a few more laws broken.
3) Then they have to get the several states to accept it. Not likely.
4) All the while, they have laid a ready-made campaign slogan i the lap of the GOP, (including the primaries, since they’re in such a hurry) Repeal, Repeal, Repeal. Talk about your mandates,
And I had my way, there would be subtext..Indict, indict, Indict.
So, yes, they can pass a bill, but if we let it stand, we deserve it.
Are you listening Mitch?
Vassar- I wondered
Scope (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 11:35AM EST (link)There is still no clear answer if Obamacare will pass, even using reconcilliation. If it does not pass, I have no doubt that Obama will use any means possible to insure that the US has socialized medicine, even if he breaks more laws to get there. The Constitution has no meaning, and, does not exist for him. He said that the Constitution is a document of negativity, it doesn’t say what the government must do for it’s people. As corrupt as he is, do you think he would go as far as signing an EO to make socialized medicine the law of the land? I think if he did that, there would not be one democrat left standing in 2010, and, in 2012 there probably wouldn’t be one democrat left in the entire congress.
In VA, there is a bill already before the legislature that has been passed, or will shortly, obliterating the federal mandate that every resident must purchase medical insurance.
I read an article recently, as well as hearing a mantra from most conservatives. Even if the Republicans/Conservatives win majorities in 2010, it will still be a test as to what they do with those majorities. If they continue on the old path, there is little doubt that a major third party will start taking hold in this country. I don’t know what it would look like, and, I don’t want it to happen, but, it will become inevitable. It is so very critical that we get the right people in office. The future of the country really does depend on it. I have faith we will get it right this time.
No
Menlo (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 2:43PM EST (link)1. No one in any branch of government cares about the constitution, at least not with anything more than a worthless statement of sentiment by some state legislatures.
2. Congress need not do or “implement” anything in the future. It’s pretty much up to the IRS and “the Secretary” to implement.
3. Nothing in the bill requires states do anything.
4. Republicans will never have the numbers or the will to do anything close to a “repeal;” and I don’t think that will be a priority for a significant percentage of voters many years from now anyway.
But there is something no one wants to talk about. People who seriously oppose this can and will defy the mandates and penalties.
If enough people do that after 2014, the whole plan would collapse. Congress would have to either scrap the whole plan or institute some full-scale socialist regime. Assuming Democrats don’t have similar big and wide majorities in government, the former is more likely. Of course both scenarios are unlikely because I simply do not believe that enough people take this seriously. They will continue to buy or accept health insurance, especially when they believe it’s “the law” and they want it anyway. I think elected Republicans or those running for office who were truly serious about this would encourage people to defy it.
“The ultimate touchstone of constitutionality is the Constitution itself and not what we have said about it.” -Felix Frankfurter
I agree Scope, and I think you're being unnecessarily dark, at least in the short term.
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 4:50PM EST (link)The state can provide cover for the people to refuse Obamacare. Moreovber, they have standing which the people individually usually do not, to sue in federal court..if only as a delaying action. Local federal judges have considerable power to halt implentation of a law withing their jurisdiction.
Most of all, you’re still beleiving a GOP as currently constited will be running things. Don’t under estimate the power of people you see on RedState, the tea parties, et al, to really transform the party. And rather quickly.
That’s what we’re working for here. Can do. Rawhh!

They don't need to provide cover
Menlo (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 5:29PM EST (link)The senate bill explicitly prohibits the federal government from doing anything to those who do not pay the penalty for not buying insurance.
Otherwise, the whole bill is a system of new taxes, government handouts, and insurance company regulations (that will harm the insured including those on Medicare as well as their doctors). I could be wrong, but I don’t see how any of those things can be “local.”

Vassar- I agree that we on the ground
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 9:41AM EST (link)will make great headway with the GOP, and hopefully many of the Republicans in Congress currently. We are already seeing some of that. Hopefully it is not just campaign rhetoric. Unfortunately, a few of the worst will remain like McCain. If they are very very few in number after 2010 and 2012, they will have no power, no say, no control, and mostly no credibility.
For Menlo- I’m not sure I want to talk breaking the law, and, defiance yet. Maybe because my state is already tackling the purchase mandate. I suspect many more states will follow suit if the Obamacare rubber meets the road.
What are you talking about?
Menlo (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 10:42AM EST (link)First of all, if it is not constitutional, it is not the law.
Second, there are no real penalties either way. If you have moral qualms about defying an illegal bill’s so-called “mandate,” then I don’t believe you care much about the bill or whether it “passes.” The same goes for anyone else who refuses to defy it.
“The ultimate touchstone of constitutionality is the Constitution itself and not what we have said about it.” -Felix Frankfurter
Menlo- Much of what the Obama admin.
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 12:00PM EST (link)is doing is unconstitutional. Do you think they care?
I said above, my state has passed legislation to ban requiring anyone from having to purchase Obama mandated medical insurance. If I read Vassar correctly, I believe he was saying that the state’s are a stop gap in some of what Washington is pumping out.
http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/12/virginia-legislature-passes-ban-on-insurance-mandate/
I’m not sure where you arrived at anything “moral” in what I said in any post above.
Let me clarify, menlo and Scope
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 3:45PM EST (link)…the role of the states is to nullify, where possible (Menlo’s right about that viz the legislation.) But more importantly they will nullify the reams of regs and exec orders that are being drafted now, ready for launch, irrespective of the clear language or intent of the act.
The people can’t fight this fight. They have to have surrogates. And when they can’t nullify outright, they stall…with a view toward repeal if/when we get Congress back.
If the Nat;’l GOP won;t go along, and that’s what Harry’s betting on I think, we’re screwed. By the time we throw out the GOP so we can then throw out the Dem’s, Al Gore’s grandchildren will be in Congress.
The window is very narrow here.

mikenad (Diary) Sunday, February 28th at 2:47PM EST (link)Mitch Daniels is definitely better than Romney and I would vote for him in the General! I still prefer Palin, DeMint, and Kasich much more, but Romney as our nominee is completely unacceptable to me. You absolutely nailed it on the House Candidates and Karen Handel would make a great Governor. I would love to see Palin endorse her. Handel is a far better than Oxendine.
Bob Bennett is terrible and anyone would be better. Chuck DeVore is a real conservative and I would love to see him unseat Boxer. I am thrilled that no one is fooled by the nutty Debra Medina. Does Marlin Stutzman really have a chance. Coats will probably get the nomination. Hostetler is terrible and I hope he does not get the nod. I would have liked Pence to run or even Richard Mourdock or Becky Skillman.Tarkanian is probably more ready for the fight than Sue Lowden. Kenny Guinn would have retired Harry Reid for sure. Williams and Buck are still wildcards. I’m not sure Hutchison resigns. J.D. Hayworth should have tried to win his House Seat back and I believe he could have. John McCain has my support for Senate. New Hampshire sucks, Mark Steyn should run, he would have my support! I wish Judd Gregg was running again! I am not sold on Mitch Daniels yet, but he is a step in the right direction! Pun intended!

“When Daniels took office in 2004, Indiana, which had been enduring Democratic governors for 16 years, was running an $800 million deficit. Four years later, it had a $1.3 billion surplus. Daniels accomplished this without raising taxes (as 66 percent of states have done); in fact, he passed the largest tax cut in state history. Nor did he cut essential services like education, as 40 states have done. As Mark Hemingway reported in National Review, “In the last three years, the state has repaid $760 million to schools and local governments that had been appropriated to finance the state’s deficit spending.” Additionally, Indiana has hired 800 new child welfare caseworkers and 250 state troopers, all while cutting the rate of increase in state spending from 5.9 to 2.8 percent annually.
Daniels has successfully courted business investment and has welcomed “two Toyota plants, a Honda factory, a $500 million Nestle facility, and a British Petroleum project that will bring $3.8 billion to the state …”

ColoradoRed Sunday, February 28th at 4:31PM EST (link)The list you have so far is almost, if not, identical to what I would have come up with. As a Colorado resident, I have to ask that you include two additional names on the update you say is coming: I ask that you support Cory Gardner for CO-4 (he’s a genuine person with deep roots in the rural, agricultural communities he would represent–and he’s one of the highest rated Reps. in the CO state legislature by the Colorado Union of Taxpayers (www.coloradotaxpayer.org)), and I absolutely implore you to shake things up by supporting DAN MAES for governor. He’s not a lifelong politician, but I can assure you he’s a solid conservative, a business owner who knows how to make the difficult but necessary choices, and let’s face it…Scott McInnis is a quasi-liberal, often failed on the Colorado Union of Taxpayers rating system while in the CO House and U.S. House, and has no chance of beating the popular Denver Mayor. I’ve heard virtually the same assessment from anyone who knows anything about Colorado politics, and the caucus process will allow him the chance to overcome a well connected, well funded front runner in a way that wouldn’t be possible in a primary.

All of a sudden, Israel seems to matter to a few Jewish Democrat CongressCritters ; One of ‘em being an anti-freedom off-worlder (Waxman) from the planet Ixliplix.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/136250
A Jewish Democrat’s support for a “one-state” solution has turned a California Congressional primary into a debate on Israel. In a senatorial race, two GOP candidates charge their opponent, a former Congressman, with being “weak on Israel.”
The southern California Congressional seat is held by Jewish incumbent Jane Harman, who has gained the support of powerful colleague Henry Waxman. He has publicly criticized challenger Marcy Winograd for adopting a policy by which “Israel would cease to exist.”
snip
Winograd is a co-founder of the Los Angeles Jews for Peace. In a speech in 2008, she called the two-state solution, of the Palestinian Authority existing as a country within Israel’s current borders, an “unrealistic” and “fundamentally wrong” answer to the Arab-Israeli struggle. Her vision calls for a single state, which virtually all Israeli leaders oppose as being a threat to the existence of a Jewish state.

Since then, though, he’s become America’s best governor. In a just world, Daniels’s record would make him the Tea Party movement’s favorite politician. During the fat years of the mid-2000s, while most governors went on spending sprees, he was trimming Indiana’s payroll, slowing the state government’s growth, and turning a $800 million deficit into a consistent surplus. Now that times are hard, his fiscal rigor is paying off: the state’s projected budget shortfall for 2011, as a percentage of the budget, is the third-lowest in the country.
But Daniels hasn’t just been a Dr. No on policy. His “Healthy Indiana” plan, which offers catastrophic coverage to low-income residents, aspires to eventually cover 130,000 people, about a third of the state’s long-term uninsured. He’s pushed targeted investments in kindergarten programs, the police force and the child welfare office. And he’s been a pragmatic free-marketeer, rather than a strict ideologue. His controversial decision to lease the Indiana toll road reaped $3.8 billion for the state. But when an attempt to outsource welfare enrollment went awry, Daniels yanked the system back into the public sector.:

victoria_29 Monday, March 1st at 12:28PM EST (link)I was very disappointed to see Les Phillip was not on the list. He is an excellent Conservative. I posted in the wrong place about Les’s race & yes I support Les but the facts are this. He is a true conservative-been involved in our local (state wide) teaparties since they started & before he became a candidate. He is a small business owner, he graduated from Annapolis, served as a Naval helicopter pilot during the Gulf War-he has proven he will lay down his life for the Constitution not just talk about it. He has a great plan for not just part of our district but all of our district to be able to grow & succeed-without the pork spending here.
Our AL05 election is historic, we have a chance for the first time ever to ELECT a Republican to this seat, it has been in Dems hands over 100 years. Les’s opponents in the primary are Parker Griffith-who as everyone knows is the flip flop that now is a R but voted with Dems 87% of the time. The other candidate in the race is a local political hack that has spent 25 yrs sucking off public teat in one appointed or elected job after another. He has a history of pork spending, he supports increasing business taxes.
Just my humble opinion but I was disappointed that this race was not addressed.

Questions about Daniels
ithos Monday, March 1st at 8:21PM EST (link)Does he oppose mass amnesty? I don’t think he does based on his guarded comments.
And does support it would you change your mind?
I do believe he would be a very strong candidate but I think this is a litmus test that most conservatives will use. I know I will.
Ditto on post supporting Allen West. What an inspiration he is.
AL Races
Melody Warbington (rwm52) (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 5:39PM EST (link)Is there anyone out there who can shed some light on who are the best conservatives running in AL? In AL 06, Stan Cooke & Paul Lambert are both lightyears ahead of Bachus. I’ve heard good things about Tim James & Bradley Byrne for Governor, and personally, I think anybody over Troy King for Lt. Gov and Shelby for Senator would be an improvement.

Duncan and Haley in SC
sethduncan (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 9:18PM EST (link)Nice choice with Duncan. He’s a consistent conservative who sticks to his guns when the going gets tough.
Haley is a take no prisoners conservative who’s not afraid to play rough with the boys. I think she’s going to take the prize in a heated primary and runoff.
