Charlie Crist Says He’d Keep the Democrats’ Health Care Deform Plan

At a time the GOP is pushing the Democrats to scrap their health care plan and start over — a view shared by the majority of Americans — Charlie Crist says he’d keep the Democrats’ plan. Mind you, he can’t think of a part worth saving, but he says he’d keep it anyway and work to “improve” it.

Marco Rubio promptly sent out a press release on this saying:

“Once again, Charlie Crist has shown why Floridians can’t trust him to go to Washington and stand up to the misguided agenda of President Obama and Congressional Democrats. At a time when Americans are pushing back against the government takeover of health care and calling for a complete reset to this flawed bill, Charlie Crist says he would not scrap it. Even more problematic, he claims he would approach health care in the same way he handled the stimulus. Floridians know all too well the soaring debt and expansion of government that resulted from that misguided approach.

“Make no mistake, the current health care proposal is a deeply flawed plan that should be scrapped entirely in favor of a truly bipartisan approach that won’t sacrifice the things that have made our health system the best in the world.”

Good on Marco.

This Move Would Seem To Indicate That Crist May Be Planning To Switch Parties

IJB Saturday, February 27th at 1:28PM EST (link)

I can’t think of any other reason to say something this asinine in the middle of a GOP Primary.

So we need to be vigilant for a party switch from Crist – this latest move really does seem to be laying the groundwork for it.

Thats what I was thinking

redtillimdead (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 1:29PM EST (link)

This is probably the clearest sign yet he is about to switch. You don’t say this when trying to come from behind in a GOP primary.

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

You don't even say this if you're trying to come from

janis (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 1:48PM EST (link)

behind in a DEM primary these days! Crist is doubly stupid if he thinks that ObamaCare is just the bestest policy to run on he ever saw.

Maybe he could climb onboard with protesting the Iraq War? I understand there’s still some libs who believe in doing that and I don’t think it would lose him as many votes as this issue will.

Great

Great – I don’t think Floridians are in the mood for a turncoat right now. Rubio wins.

It’s still morning in America.

Seems Great minds think alike

My first thought was that he could not answer the question because it would jeopardize his chances to run as a Dem or Ind.

This guy is far beyond tone deaf.

I think someone should examine his mental stability. How could anyone reasanably connected to reality think this approach will get him elected?

Worried He'll Jump Parties

DavidSage (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 2:02PM EST (link)

I almost think Rubio should start making some gaffes just to ensure Crist stays in the Republican primary.

I can see Crist being spiteful and vain enough to jump parties, and it absolutely will hurt Rubio if Crist makes a run as an independent, even though Crist has absolutely no chance winning. All Crist has to do is siphon off 5-7% of the vote, and suddenly we have a very close race.

In the same way Daggett almost put Corzine over the top in New Jersey, I could see a Crist candidacy taking away a Senate seat from us. Especially since Crist is a sitting Governor, that lends his campaign quite a bit of credibility (unfortunately).

As much as I want to see Crist humiliated, I’m definitely not cheering on him to leave the Republican Party and undertake a kamikaze mission.

It'll Be More Helpful

Honestly, if Crist makes a run as an Independent, it will help Rubio even more!

Best Case Scenario

conservativepopulist (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 10:27AM EST (link)

I too hope that Crist remains a Republican, at least until November. However, I sense that he would be viewed by Republican voters as such a blatant political opportunist, that he would siphon off virtually no Republican votes in the general election. I am not expert, but my instincts tell me that as an independent candidate, the governor’s campaign would be comparable to that of John Anderson’s independent run in 1980 against Carter/Reagan. In that case, I believe the Illinois congressman drew far more votes from the Democrats than the Republicans.
But as I say I am no expert. That’s why I agree with you that the best case scenario is for Christ to lose the primary, then bow out of the race entirely.

A read of Crist's quotes tells all

CMaree (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 2:03PM EST (link)

All you need to know about Crist. He doesn’t actually say he supports the health care bloated bill. His phrases slip and slide around like a chameleon on a quivering aspen branch. Then he slips into that D.Medina lingo of dividing state and federal concerns:

You know, I’m pretty focused on Florida right now. I mean, after the session I’ll be more focused on the issues in Washington. But I’ve got to do my first job first.”

Well you know, Mr. Crist, the Feds want to tell YOUR state how to manage health care in this eminent domain bill.
Go Rubio!

I have a quick question...

ceili_dancer (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 2:11PM EST (link)

If Charlie jumps to Independant or Democrat, will that count as quitting the race in an office pool? I have one day left, (I picked February) and am just waiting for this piece of bread to be pulled out of the toaster, the fake tan scaped off and eaten for breakfast.

New slogan

tjexcite (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 2:22PM EST (link)

Vote Rubio, Crist will be the 60th vote.

Not much chance for Charlie

Latest polling, Crist donw by 18% in second poll this week.

Rubio up by 20% over strongest Dem challenger, Meek

All hope gone for Charlie.

This was a man that I mildly liked a year ago.

No way now.

It shows how distanced from reality he is when he is in the minority in the general public that wants to work on the Dem bill..forget the massive majority within his own party.

Right now, I am not sure that Crist could win even if he ran as a Democrat.

Maybe Charlie will come out of both closets not just the political one.

He is supposed to know this bill as Gov. Of Florida.

antisocial (Diary) Saturday, February 27th at 3:03PM EST (link)

How will this bill impact his state? Cost benefit analysis? He is sleeping on the job. Why should the voters reward him for that?

He doesn’t want to scrap it. He can’t name one thing that he likes. Sounds Stupid to me.

Falshback: May 12, 2009

vamoose Saturday, February 27th at 6:36PM EST (link)

National Republican leaders today quickly endorsed Governor Charlie Crist’s bid for the U.S. Senate.

Their swift action dealt a blow to Crist’s primary opponent Marco Rubio and sent a clear signal that party leaders think the moderate governor has the best chance of winning the Senate seat.

Within hours of Crist’s announcement, he was endorsed by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and by the Republican Senate campaign chairman John Cornyn.

This is the political wisdom of our GOP leadership. These guys need to be taken to the woodshed if Crist bolts the party rather than simply stepping aside.

June 16, 2009 – Jim DeMint endorses Marco Rubio when Rubio was trailing Crist in the polls 54-23.

Absolutely Agree

conservativepopulist (Diary) Monday, March 1st at 9:57AM EST (link)

I absolutely agree. Unfortunately, there often is still a difference between the terms “conservative” and “Republican”. Add to that the disease of “establishment thinking” that infects both parties, and this is what transpires.
There is little doubt that the Crist endorsement of John McCain right before the 2008 Republican presidential primary was just enough to push the progressive Arizona senator over the finish line. In stark contrast, Marco Rubio stood by conservative-populist governor Mike Huckabee. Too bad for everyone that the Republican establishment saw Mike as a “danger” for being opposed to the Wallstreet bailout, supporting the Fair Tax and – sin of sins – being a Washington outsider. The people wanted change. The GOP foolishly denied them that choice.
