The speculation is building that Charlie Crist is going to leave the GOP.
Two highly placed and independent sources, speaking strictly on background, tell me that Gov. Charlie Crist is preparing to leave the Republican Party and run as an independent in the race for the U.S. Senate.
With Crist trailing Marco Rubio by 18 points in the latest polls, the Crist campaign has been in panic mode, launching attack after attack on the conservative Rubio.
Yesterday, the attacks reached a crescendo with the Crist campaign, and/or his disgraced Republican Party of Florida thug bootlickers, leaking Rubio’s credit card expenses from his time as speaker of the Florida House.
According to published reports, the former RPOF chair, the bovine bully-boy buffoon Jim Greer, spent more in a month than Rubio did in his entire two years as state House speaker. If all the Crist campaign has on Rubio is $53.49 at Winn-Dixie in Miami for “food” and a couple of plane tickets for his wife, then it’s game, set and match, as far as the Republican primary for Senate is concerned.
Here’s what will happen if Charlie Crist leaves the GOP. The DC-GOP Establishment crowd will attack RedState, Jim DeMint, and Marco Rubio for shrinking the GOP. Instead of pointing out that moderate Republicans are sore loser who don’t play well with conservatives, conservatives will be attacked for chasing Crist out of the party.
Crist might like a three-way primary with Meeks and Rubio, but he still has no path to victory. In fact, he’ll be wrestling with Meeks over the same voter pool as independents drift right toward Rubio.

It's getting to be a pattern
houstoneagle (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 3:38PM EST (link)and it better stop right now with this primary season here in 2010…moderate RINOs being sore losers and taking their marbles and going home or (ala NY-23) to the dark side. But we conservatives are expected to put our pom-poms on and go hoo rah sis boom bah for the moderates in the generals when THEY win the primaries. What a double standard.

Similar reaction here
brian_garst Thursday, February 25th at 3:42PM EST (link)I had a similar reaction when I first heard some of this speculation the other day: the party establishment will seek to cover their a%^*& by blaming conservatives. What they don’t get is that reality that we don’t want people who leave the party because they lose a primary. It’s promoting those type of opportunists in the first place that is the problem, not the people who defeat them.
But they’ll look foolish when Rubio wins anyway.

Castor (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 3:46PM EST (link)If Charlie Crist shows up as a sore loser and runs as an independent, he will garner precious few Republican votes, considerably less than the Dimmocrat votes he will steal away from Kendrick Meek.
If he was any kind of a man, he would pull out of the race and endorse Marco Rubio. That would leave his future open to do battle with Nelson.
I think Jeb should call and talk some sense into him.
That's the question
RedBeard Thursday, February 25th at 4:22PM EST (link)Will Crist do the honorable thing and either play out the primary process graciously, or will he be a crass political weasel and try the independent route?
If he goes for the latter, I suspect his public career is over. As you say, this is not New York, and the voters here are probably a lot less forgiving of weasels.

On Crist
kevinaw2 (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 3:48PM EST (link)I cannot begin to express my disappointment with Charlie Crist. If he switches or runs as an independent, it will turn to outrage. I’ve been in Tampa since 1997. I’ve voted for Crist five times in primaries and general election, including in 1998 when he ran against Senator Bob Graham. I even don’t mind him hugging Obama, as long as he doesn’t embrace his policies. As we know, he did just that.
Unfortunately, Charlie has proven that conservative voters like myself are played for fools. I feel like a fool five times over. He, like many politicians feign principles for personal gain. He feels ENTITLED to be a U.S. Senator and now that the people of Florida are looking for real change, He’s acting like the little kid throwing a fit, taking his bat, ball to go home and cry to mommy how the other kids were mean to him. He doesn’t get his way? He just changes his principles! I would call it narcissism, but I believe it requires one to think themselves always in the right. He has no principles, so therefore redefines right to suit his momentary objectives.
Marco Rubio should’ve followed the rules on using the AMEX, but that is a piddling issue when measured against the public career of Charlie Crist. It’s amazing how he was claiming to be a true conservative, but I guess that’s no longer convenient.
I'm certain

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 4:22PM EST (link)Hillbuzz claims rather strongly that Crist has a slew of skeletons in his closet of the ballgown variety.
Don’t know if there’s any truth to this – Florida locals would know better, but my gut is that Crist does seem to be a cousin to John Edwards in terms of character.
But if so, Crist would be asking for nothing but trouble if he sneaks out to run as an Independent after sliming Rubio. And if not the FL-GOP, there have got to others who might like to jump in if they sense that Crist is going down.
Those who live by the sword, die by the sword. We shall see what stuff Crist is made of.

I'm a FLORIDA NATIVE
teridavisnewman (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 9:21AM EST (link)I can tell you a lot about Crist because I’m a Florida native now living in Illinois (and I’m the Republican nominee for the 12th Congressional district vs. Jerry Costello) and Crist has been in FL politics a long time. He was competent enough at his various elected posts and moved steadily up the ladder despite the buzz that he is probably gay. Mark Kirk is also rumored to be gay and is the RINO candidate for Senator here in IL although, like Crist, he denies it despite the ongoing buzz. While I have no firsthand knowledge of Charlie’s peccadilloes, the buzz has been going on forever and where there’s this much smoke, there has to be a fire somewhere. It has been generally accepted in Florida that IF Crist is gay, it was to be ignored because he is generally competent at his various elected posts with no open scandals surfacing or likely to surface, and therefore his personal life remains private. Discretion is the better part of valor as they say, and Charlie is very discreet, so discreet that Carole was unheard of until the Senate race was on the horizon and suddenly there she was. Draw your own conclusion on that, as I have, because while I believe a lot of things that I won’t say, if I say something, I believe it to be true.
Florida is a transient state and 5th generation natives such as myself are exceedingly rare. This being the case, the population of the Sunshine State is very diverse and fairly tolerant of many things so long as the job gets done and their faces aren’t rubbed in scandal on the front page. Florida is also comprised of many different age groups and religions and has welcomed all with open arms for the money they bring. Key West is as much a rainbow city as San Francisco and it is tolerated by all. Being gay isn’t a disease and what people do in the privacy of their homes is none of my business–this is still America, despite the best efforts of the liberals and the Obamunists. I’m much more concerned that Crist is a RINO than I am about his sexual orientation and we must have conservatives in Washington or the country is lost. The reckless spending and borrowing is going to destroy our country and the jobs that have gone overseas are not coming back. China is using their money to build more factories to take all of the manufacturing jobs worldwide. They use slave labor and those who do not work are put in work camps and when people get old, their relatives are responsible for them or they die. There’s no retirement in China for ordinary people–I’ve lived in Asia and the social system is totally dependent on the family structure. These problems are more important than a RINO who is about to be retired by a better Conservative candidate.

Third Street (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 4:37PM EST (link)…he knows he’s not likely to make it as an independent; this maneuver is mainly just to screw Rubio. Crist is still popular enough in Florida to siphon off a good 1/3rd of the Republican vote.
But this is what liberal Republicans do, from Jim Leach to Wayne Gilchrest to Dede Scozzafava. If they can’t have the marbles then they make sure everyone else goes down with them.

erp617 Thursday, February 25th at 5:42PM EST (link)Crist may be surprised at the reaction of voters here in Florida should he change parties or go negative on Rubio. He’s been waiting for his bud Obama to call him to DC for an important job — poor jerk he believed the greatest liar since bubba.
Obama has bigger fish to fry
voxoreason Friday, February 26th at 5:05PM EST (link)Crist isn’t a potential game changer (unless he goes independent, possibly handing the seat to a dem, so this is a win-win situation for Obama, no WH position required), and Obama is already sweating two or three illegal offers for White House positions in exchange for dropping out of the competition so that Obama can get someone he has (or believes to have) more control over.
The big question: at what point will Obama having his staff make illegal offers to, eg, Sestak, become such a big story that they will throw Obama under the bus? The media gave Bubba a pass, until Monica Lewinsky became just such a big story. One can only imagine the angst that Newsweek must have suffered after spiking the story, only to see it turn up on Drudge!

some good news
bannor Thursday, February 25th at 6:22PM EST (link)In Florida if you lose the republican primary (or any primary) you can’t run in the general as an independent. at least we have that going for us. So were he to jump ship i’d think he’d need to do it prior to the filing deadline of 4/30/10 but i’m guessing there.
Make Crist Pledge To The GOP
crosley (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 6:41PM EST (link)If there’s truth to these rumors, we need to have Crist on the record promise he won’t jump parties or run as an independent. It should be a no-brainer to make that promise. If he won’t take that pledge, obviously he’s done in Republican politics. If he does take the pledge, and jumps parties anyway, he erodes an enormous amount of credibility for his candidacy.
If Crist does make an independent run, it very well could siphon off just enough votes from Rubio to put a Democrat over the top, so I’m certainly not egging on Crist to leave the party and try to make a run as an independent.
I’d like to have the two square off in a primary, and then have a fair fight against the Democrat nominee.

Crist's Advisors should be fired
GregInFla (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 11:40PM EST (link)Crist was supposed (logic would indicate) to run for another term as Governor this year, then challenge Nelson in 2012 for the Senate. This would give GOP the Gov. seat after the census returns are in. He just needed to be patient. He really would have had little GOP opposition in Gov. primary. I am not a Crist fan, by any means, as my sig says. He (and FLGOP) either got bad advice or was very impatient.

pirate55 (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 11:36AM EST (link)The current Republican Party leaders continue to display an uncanny blindness and deafness to what is going on around them. It is virtually impossible to get a “response” from the so called “Republican Establishment” in Florida either statewide (The RPOF) or locally (Lee County as an example) Try going on either one of the websites suggesting you contact them and see if they respond. THEY DON’T.
That being said, the total ignorance of Conservatives in the State of Florida is dangerous and I would suggest those “main stream” Republicans who continue their ignorance join Mr, Crist as Independents, so we can identify the truly responsible Republicans here in Florida.
The fact of the matter here is you may see this tactic by other RINO’s in this country. Get ready and remember Conservative principles can never again be compromised at the expense of the American people.
