On March 23, 2010, Utah voters will go to their caucus meetings. There they can become delegates to the state GOP convention and vote to remove Bob Bennett from power.
From now until March 23, 2010, I’ll will put up a daily post on why Bob Bennett needs to go.
Let’s start with this one:
According to the Salt Lake Tribune on September 12, 2009, “Few politicians have more ties to Freddie [Mac] and Fannie [Mae] than Utah Senator Bob Bennett, who topped all Republicans in campaign contributions from the mortgage duo since 1989.”
Utah can do better than that. Read this to find out how.
If you live in Utah, put 7:00 p.m. on March 23, 2010, on your calendar and help take back the GOP and change Congress.

Amen, Erick. Red States like UT sending Purple senators
eburke (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 12:13PM EST (link)like Bennett and Hatch to DC are a bigger problem than Blue States like MS sending purple senators to DC.
Personally, I can’t decide if I like Lee or Eager better and I don’t have to decide ’cause I no longer live in the state. But either one of ‘em would be a helluva lot better than Bennett.
And, due to UT’s ‘drop the lowest candidate until one gets to 60% or there’s only 2 left’, the conservatives don’t have to worry about splitting their votes and letting Bob slip in.
Do it, Utah!! Send a message!!!

Freddie and Fannie
joecollins (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 12:30PM EST (link)I still can’t wrap my brain around the idea that federally guaranteed Freddie and Fannie can donate to federal campaigns. This is under the category of “There ought to be a law.”
I'm sure there are lots of
jfindl2 (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 12:35PM EST (link)legitimate criticisms of Bob Bennett based on policy issues and his voting record. However, the idea that he is not a conservative b/c he has accepted a ton of money from a Fannie and Freddie doesn’t hold water. What it does show is that Bob Bennett is an incumbent who has spent a lot of time in Washington.
I looked up the contributions from Fannie and Freddie, both “government entities,” or whatever you want to call them, donated lots of money to incumbents of both parties. For example the federal candidate who was the top recipient of Freddie Mac donations in the 2006 was George Allen. In 2000, the Republican senator who received the most funds from Freddie was one Rick Santorum. Fannie Mae’s PAC gave 7 incumbents 10k in 2008, none of which happened to be Bennett. In 2006, Jim Talent was the top Republican who received the most campaign contributions from the Fannie Mae PAC.
Fannie and Freddie give lots of money to incumbents, especially those in close reelection contests. Again I’m sure there are lots of reasons to support somebody else instead of Bob Bennett, but accepting PAC funds shouldn’t be one of them.

this whole rant on Bennett is
fsured Wednesday, February 24th at 12:47PM EST (link)a waste of time, imo. Utah election rules are very strange-a weird caucus system followed by a primary. Bennett won’t get the 60% needed to win the caucus, but he’s the only person w/ the money to win the primary. I just think sometimes we lose focus on the real problem.
Bennett
utah_1 Wednesday, February 24th at 12:53PM EST (link)that “strage-a weird” caucus system you talk about is the very reason why he can lose at convention. Money plays no part of it. Bennett will be beaten. A poll was done of registered Republicans who voted in the last election, and Bennett’s re-elect #’s were 27%. The lowest in the nation.
this just highlights the real question
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 1:00PM EST (link)why were government controlled entities allowed to lobby congress in the first place? The whole arrangement stinks to high heaven.

True
jfindl2 (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 1:07PM EST (link)I mean before they were taken over, they technically weren’t gov’t controlled by there definitely was an implicit guarantee that they would be bailed out if they ever got into trouble, which obviously happened. My point isn’t that it is a great thing that Fannie and Freddie could lobby, it was just that both “entities” gave money to both sides and it wasn’t just to RINOs.

Erick is right
Darin_H (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 1:23PM EST (link)He didn’t say Bennett wasn’t conservative because he took money from Fannie and Freddie, he said that he should go because he took money. This is only one is a series of posts showing why Bennett should go. Individually, they don’t have to be OMGWTFBBQ, but taken together give conservatives reason to caucus for another.

Nobody is getting 60%
fsured Wednesday, February 24th at 1:34PM EST (link)and that means Bennett wins the primary. That’s my prediction. Utah’s election system is extremely interesting. Definitely fun to watch.
Bennett un-Senated
solutions Wednesday, February 24th at 1:21PM EST (link)It is very clear that people of Utah do not want Bennett. Special interest groups want Bennett to stay.
My vote is on Mike.

Target McCain, Voinovich too
ohiohistorian (Diary) Wednesday, February 24th at 4:52PM EST (link)Target John because every comment you made about Bennett is true of McCain on many issues (immigration, stimulus, Gang of 12, McCain-Feingold). And target Voinovich because he continues to vote like McCain on spending issues and many others this year.

My Fear...
saintgeorgegentile Wednesday, February 24th at 5:36PM EST (link)… is that once defeated for re-nomination, Bennett will go the “let’s all work together in harmony” route and instantly become a 60th vote for the dems.
