If Barack Obama hoped to calm people down over the panty-bomber incident, he just failed massively. Sunday morning, White House Counterterrorism Chief John Brenan tried to get the Republicans to share in the blame.
Not only did it not work, but the Republicans are coming forward to say Brennan is totally full of it and are mad as all get out.
John Brennan went on Meet the Press and told David Gregory he briefed four Republicans and then said, “I explained to them that he was in FBI custody. That Mr. Abdulmatallab was in fact talking, that he was cooperating at that point. They knew that ‘in FBI custody’ means that there’s a process then you follow as far as Mirandizing and presenting him in front of the magistrate.”
He then accused the GOP of playing politics with national security.
There is just one problem.
The four Republicans have come forward. One said the “briefing” so casual and short that it was not even on a secure phone line and reported no information not already known.
Perhaps worse for Brennan, Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) said Brennan never mentioned mirandizing the terrorist and, despite Brennan’s assumption that mirandizing the bomber was implied by saying the FBI was holding him, none of the Republicans briefed thought the White House would actually be stupid enough to do that.
Instead of making the GOP run the other way and drop the issue, the White House just waved a red flag in front of a charge bull.

These guys make me long for the integrity filled capable hands of Janet Reno.
NeoKong (Diary) Sunday, February 7th at 10:02PM EST (link)When Brenan accuses Republicans of playing politics with national security all he is really doing is saying No I’m not …you are” like a twelve year old. Does he really want to have this matter settled out in the open…..?
Shouldn’t someone like him be invisible and not out in the press picking fights with U.S. Senators in public….?
Who now I ask is the one playing politics ? While I do sometimes expect that politics may be played by an actual politician why then is Brenan trying to do it ?
Doesn’t he have more important things to do ?
Why is it every time I turn around there is an Obama official picking a fight with someone but yet somehow the President goes on T.V. and lectures the rest of us about the hostile tone in Washington…?

It's not up to me, I'm only the counterterrorism chief
vamoose Sunday, February 7th at 10:55PM EST (link)Brennan said his message to GOP leaders carried the strong implication that Abdulmatallab would be Mirandized. If so, why, as White House Counterterrorism Chief, wasn’t he advocating against the FBI taking control? Voting present seems to be endemic in this White House. It seems all to clear clear that the counterterrorism crew in the White House and elsewhere in the administration answer to Holder and the FBI.

I head some one say tonight on local radio in Boston that the terrorists were afraid of GW Bush and Dick Cheney. They were afraid because Dick shot his best friend in the face. I want the terrorists to fear us, not them to think this country is run by jokers.
Where does the Boston radio stop and you begin?
voxoreason Monday, February 8th at 4:09PM EST (link)Bush and Cheney “got it.” Obama campaigns against it… then, as always, takes a 180. Every single time.
I wasn’t as concerned when my son was doing two tours of Iraq under Bush (fortunately, he was a sharpshooter with a crew of 8, and his targets were so far away, a mile or more, that he had to get his settings from a forward unit, then have them radio him back to tell him he hit his target; his response, because they got to see the target taken out and he didn’t: “Screw you!”; but he recalled this with a smile), but we don’t have clowns in the White House now. We have The Joker. (Some people just want to see the world burn.)
A lot more praying going on at our house as we await our son’s safe return from Afghanistan under an unfit to command C-i-C. He was there as something like 166 troops (from memory, could be off a bit) were taken out while Obama dithered over sending more troops requested.
Bush handed over the info Obama needed in Nov of ’08, while agreeing to remain silent about this (Obama’s gratitude has been obvious and obnoxiously repetitive); Obama dithered until March ’09 before making his ongoing dithering more high-profile. Plus, he got to consult with his veep. What a comfort that ISN’T to me.
Okay, I had a love-hate opinion of Bush (parlez vous “tax cuts”?), but when he got something right, he really got it right. And I doubt that Cheney deliberately shot anyone. (He was the “grown up” in the White House, however, and I would sure love to see him in command rather than Obama.)
Obama/Biden make Bush/Cheney look like consummate professionals. Obama is infinitely forgettable (his quotes aren’t memorable), but who will ever forget Cheney’s classic reply to “Leaky Leahy,” after Leahy blasted him in a speech, then greeted him afterward as “my old friend”?
Do YOU remember it? Just asking.
I take exception to your remarks. Maybe that’s just me. If I’ve misunderstood you, my sincere apologies.
Senator Christopher Bond
creditman Sunday, February 7th at 10:59PM EST (link)I worked for Chris Bond while he was gov. of Missouri. He has a great sense of humor and is very well liked by the citizens of Missouri. He’s smarter than this administration gives him credit for. I guarantee it will be at their peril to do so. He knows exacty which buttons to push. He won’t get pushed around by them. Notice that already told Robt. Gibbs to screw off over this situation.
Well he "don't debate Press secretaries".

vettepilot (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 2:34AM EST (link)said that… He may as well just have come out and told Bond “my dad can beat up your dad.”
I hope Bond goes for it. Because, IMO, Brennan's job was to plant the seed...
smagar (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 7:04AM EST (link)The Republicans knew about it, and did nothing.
“it” being the way the Underwear Bomber was being handled.
The WH knows that the MSM needs a small seed of “truth,” a verifiable fact, from which to build the perception that the GOP was aware of how the Underwear Bomber was being handled, did nothing when they had the chance, and are now using the issue for political gain.
Brennan gave them that seed on MTP. MSM stories can now quote Brennan, and from that quote build stories that imply the GOP played politics with this issue.
The best way to bust this tactic…and lessen the likelihood that the opposition will use it in the future…is to confront it head on, publicly, and loudly.
Remember how, during Alito’s confirmation hearings, Feingold and Kennedy tried to insinuate that Alito was a racist? They hoped to bleed him slowly, through lots of little-but-plausibly deniable cuts during the hearings.
Lindsay Graham would have none of it. “Are you a closet racist?” he asked Alito, in front of a shocked Senate hearing panel and even more shocked world.
In so doing, Graham burst Feingold’s and Kennedy’s sorry little game. He dragged it out into the light and exposed them for the little weasels they were. (Tommy Thompson, your country needs you.)
Kit Bond, or someone with a voice just as powerful, needs to confront Brennan head on, publicly. It’s time for some trips to Fox and Friends and WaPo editorials.
Don’t let the seed Brennan planted grow. For, rest assured, the MSM is eager to water it.

mosander Monday, February 8th at 6:37AM EST (link)Boy, once the truth starts coming out about all the corruption in DC. It will take more than 2700 pages to deal with it! Obama can’t wait to stifle free speech and silence everyone who disagrees with his policies, which is more than 60% of the country. Good luck doing that, even in your police state you’re forming!

wingnut71 Monday, February 8th at 7:29AM EST (link)I’d love to see ol’ Kit smack this one right back in their faces. I’m sure many other Missourians would too. Even if only to show the rest of the Union that Missouri has one Senator who doesn’t feel the need to Claire-ify her position and will fight publicly for an issue he believes in.
Besides that...what if they did mention he had been Mirandized?
AceInTX (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 11:10AM EST (link)What could these four Congressional Republicans do about it? Congress makes the laws…the executive executes and carries it out…what Could bond or any other of the Republicans do…Send in commandos and take the fruit of kaboom bomber away from Holder and the FBI….and turn him over to the CIA?
This is shoveling dung on a massive scale!
the recurrent theme
olddog Monday, February 8th at 3:19PM EST (link)Seems to be, to belittle the republicans, as will this meeting in February, to have bipartisan meeting on Health (no-) care proposals which will be dismissed as non-workable, as they did the republicans proposed amendments while the bill passed through Congress, to this point. This is another ploy to make the administration look bipartisan and rescue BHO’s numbers. My hope is, people really look closely at who was really blocking health care and why , this administration still is guiding us down the garden path, only its really the sewer of liberal fascism. they are playing a game, but, it is really, a war on the freedom’s of Individual Americans. Tremendous stakes are involved here, the future of our kids and their kids is the ultimate price, that will be paid, and they don’t even get a vote on it..
Support our Troops!!
