Let’s admit there is media bias. We know there is despite the best efforts of some on the left to deny it.
I cannot tell you the number of reporters at major networks and newspapers who will, in private moments, admit there is a real bias.
In most cases it is not an intentional bias. It is a product of being largely highly educated, liberally inclined, white urbanites who live on the Upper West Side, have drivers whisk them off to their studio or out of Adams-Morgan into downtown DC where they hang out with other fashionable liberals who, unlike me, think Jimmy Choo is a shoe manufacturer and not, a I thought, a Chinese restaurant.
They talk about what’s in the New York Times Magazine and on its front page. They gossip about who isn’t sleeping with Maureen Dowd anymore. They go to wine country in France, tie the latest J. Crew sweater around their neck because Michelle does, and otherwise live in an insular world of group think.
The preconceived notions they develop in this insular world of their likeminded friends colors what gets reported and what doesn’t. The majority of Americans who realize global warming is a scam are pooh-poohed as ignorant because all the guys at Brown, Harvard, and Vassar say so.
The credible scientists who disagree with the group think are shunned as holocaust deniers. Republicans and conservatives are treated as the same creature.
David Gergen’s latest bout of conventional wisdom is serenaded on NPR and David Frum is celebrated for speaking truth to power from the renovated carriage house behind his posh home on the northwest side of Washington. The women from The View are considered intellectuals, except for that Republican one who is just on there for the affirmative action quota for wingers.
Sarah Palin is disdained because she had a Down Syndrome child and all the forty something first time moms dropping their kids off (assuming it’s not the nanny doing it) at Birch Wathen Lenox, Trinity, and Dwight before going to work at their six-figure jobs know that smart women abort Down Syndrome babies — there’s a great clinic in SoHo where you can shop fashionably after the baby is chopped up and sucked out.
Sometimes the bias is more patent, open, and intentional. After all, friends do want to help out their friends and likeminded brethren on the left. Any criticism of Obama is racist and conservatives sometimes must pay the price.
The mainstream media arising out of that culture misses stories that don’t fit the narrative or don’t make it past the New York – DC corridor echo chamber.
Right now the media is missing a really big story. It does not fit their narrative.
The narrative, of course, is that conservatives want a totalitarian pure party with a purity test for the GOP. You want gay marriage? No way. Pro-choice? No support. For government assisted health care options? We don’t recognize you. At least that is what the media claims.
So the media has and is ignoring the alliance between left and right among the GOP in Massachusetts.
Scott Brown is not a conservative. He makes no pretension of being a conservative. He defends Romneycare, which most conservative have rejected. He is pro-choice. But he is for less government interference in the free market and less spending. Like Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania, he is the perfect sort of Republican candidate for New England.
Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund is encouraging its members to support and donate to Scott Brown.. Marco Rubio is supporting Scott Brown. RedState is supporting Scott Brown. We, well . . . I, suspect he’ll give conservatives heart burn as New England Republicans do. But all of us know he is a good, pragmatic fit for Massachusetts. He’ll vote against Obamacare and he’d vote against a second stimulus. Conservatives do know, despite media and liberal Republican (called “moderate” by the media) claims to the contrary, that the GOP needs 51 seats in the Senate to have a majority.
Conservative and liberal Republicans are united behind Scott Brown. You’d think a mainstream media that has generated millions of words on television, radio, and print about conservatives demanding a pure party would take notice.
But that would shatter their whole narrative. And the last thing anyone wants to do at the next party at the Met or Sally Quinn’s house is mention the latest liberal friend in rehab or that maybe their group think on conservatives is shallow, self-serving, and vain.

All indications and available evidence point to Mr. Brown being a man of principle. We know going in which of his principles could use a little work. As long as he remains a limited government, free market, national security hawk, I don’t think he’ll disappoint us.

Prophetic. While I support the individual’s right to exercise freedom, that concept is generally agreed to end when harm is done to another. What is limited gov't?
iconicfreedom Friday, January 15th at 8:03AM EST (link)If Republicans REALLY uphold limited government, then that limit has to extend to even the strongest of “social issues” that affect them.
Here’s why: limited gov’t means gov’t out of all these issues so that free markets, creative and innovative solutions can spring forth where communities can address a list of priorities rather than gov’t becoming the nanny for your specific concern.
using gov’t to advance your personal agenda is not limiting gov’t, but expanding it. get gov’t out of it all and we will all put our collective heads together and come up with some great ideas that gov’t will NEVER come up with.
If Republicans want to stand for limited gov’t, personal responsibility and safety of the nation they’ll find a whole lot more people voting (R).
It doesn’t mean anyone is telling you to give up your principles in life, it means getting gov’t out of favoring your principles over another American’s principles. And isn’t that what this pluralistic nation is really all about – acknowledge the freedom of all while favoring none?

Governing is a moral act
jyalai (Diary) Friday, January 15th at 1:25PM EST (link)To govern is to make a moral statement. Every law is founded on a moral judgment. In a democratic republic, the governed must have a unified view of morality to make it work. That is why John Adams made the statement that our republic must be a republic of moral and Christian people, otherwise it fails (my loose paraphrase). If we don’t agree to some extent on what is right as a society, we fail as a society.
I’m sticking with and promoting Christianity, the world view that gave us the most caring and free society on earth.

Government is a necessary evil
aesthete (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:01AM EST (link)that we are forced to tolerate because the alternative (anarchy) is so much worse. Each and every time that we make a decision to entrust government with some power, we give it the authority to use violence and the threat of same to achieve those ends. If you look at the way that the Founders framed the federal government, it is apparent that they, as a group, didn’t much care for good governance; checks and balances are a damper on “good governance”.
Also, the best way for the government to support Christianity is by giving it, and other religions, a level playing field to operate on, with bias towards none. If Jesus is who he says he is, it’s almost unfair to demand comparatively insignificant government and systemic advantages!!

Aesthete, your argument is right but
CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 4:35AM EST (link)using simply “is necessary” would not lose any of your thrust while preventing the Christian from having to reconcile the clear biblical theme that government is a beneficial provision ordained by God and therefore not inherently “an evil”.
Us old Calvinists have no trouble with God sending evil–corrective or punitive calamity, not deviation from his moral law–into the world, but that is not an essential aspect of proper government. The moral evil lies within us the governed, not within government itself.

Partially true, but with a fault
BA Cyclone (Diary) Tuesday, January 19th at 12:36PM EST (link)“The moral evil lies within us the governed, not within government itself.”
James Madison said, “if men were angels, no government would be necessary.”
The inherent weakness of government, of course, is that it is populated by those same men.
I think there is a great Reagan quote that says this, but I’m having trouble finding it quickly.
I think the spirit (as I understand it) of Aesthete’s point holds perfectly true: the more power we delegate away from ourselves toward government, the greater risk we put to our liberty on the whole. The strength of our government in the U.S. is its design toward this reality – and the extent to which we continually defeat this design is the reason for further hardship and decreasing prosperity.
“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject to particular exceptions.” — James Madison

I agree with the fact of government's inherent weakness
CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Wednesday, January 20th at 6:00AM EST (link)as well as Aesthete’s desire to see it limited. But that can be expressed from a NL perspective without needing to use the word “evil”, which a Christian cannot reconcile to the biblical pattern of authority as established by God, both pre- and post-Fall, which is good even though executed by men who are not.

You'll be helped by using a little more precision with the Adams quote
CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 4:16AM EST (link)First, his actual words were:
My challenge to you is to reconcile that with your statement, along with the following:
Speaking as a Christian who holds beliefs–the doctrines of Sovereign Grace–that John Adams explicitly and intentionally rejected, I nevertheless commend him for recognizing that the essence of Christianity is most explicitly NOT its “moral teachings”. That distinction seems strange to contemporary Christians, but only because the dual tracks, beginning in the early 1800s, of liberal social activism and legalistic social behavior improvement programs have so infected the American church that Christianity and morality have become synonomous to many. On both tracks, the gospel of Jesus Christ has become either nearly forgotten or outright rejected.
Adams’ distinction is necessary, first, because the secular government simply cannot tell me how to stand justified, clothed in an alien righteousness, before the thrice-holy Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and second, because the moral commonality of a citizenry sufficient to undergird a representative government can be found, with local variants, across mankind (a fact acknowledge by Christianity itself).
Let me be more specific about my challenge to your statement. Are you saying that a constitutional republic CANNOT work, let’s say, in any of: Japan, India, Iraq?
Those dreading urbanization should remember that though the Kingdom of God first appeared in a temporal Garden, at the end of the book it is established in an eternal City. (paraphrase, James M. Boice)

What does this have to do with the OP's point?
aesthete (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:51AM EST (link)I can see a tangential relation, but Erick’s point is that the media ignores conservative support of non-socially conservative candidates so that it can further a narrative of fiscal conservatives vs. social conservatives.

Leopard1996 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 12:03PM EST (link)If a republican ran for office, and espoused both the low taxes and fiscal responsibility, and the pro-choice mentality of let the states decide how they want to treat the legality of aborition, or drug legalization, etc, would you vote for that person, or would that exact same philosophy need to come out of the mouth of someone marked with the (L) after their name.
If you would vote for the republican, then I would say that you are an honest individual, if not, then you are part of the problem not the solution.

As a libertarian, how would you feel about this...
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 12:29PM EST (link)1. Roe is overturned, or somehow the “federal right” to an abortion is abrogated, and the legality is returned to the states.
2. A State outlaws abortion based on the legal theory that an unborn baby is a “person” at conception and as such has Constitutional rights. Said State structures it’s law in a way that abortion would be legal in the case where carrying the child to term would result in the death of the mother, giving the mother the right of self defense.
3. A woman sues the State, based on the theory that an unborn baby is not a “person” at law and thus has no Constitutional rights and as a living person she does and should be allowed to have an abortion.
4. The case goes to SCOTUS and they hold in favor of the State, citing specifically that the unborn child is indeed a “person” entitled to Constitutional rights and that an abortion, absent the exception noted, and that an abortion would deny the child the right to due process.
Those events, which I understand are dependent on the makeup of SCOTUS but are not all that far-fetched, would effectively outlaw abortion in the US.
I find that outcome to be good, primarily because I do believe that the Constitution protects “the least of us” and that human life does begin at conception and is worth of legal protection.
What say you?
I would agree with that ruling
Leopard1996 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:01PM EST (link)My only concern would be what about a state like say Californina or New York where because of what they believe they keep abortion legal. I personally feel they have that right as a state to do so, and if I don’t like that I can vote with my feet, and move to a state where it is illegal. Same difference for those that are pro-abortion. (Trust me I have this debate with my slowly converting to my way of things, liberal, feminist wife). They can choose to live is the states that abortion would be allowed, and deal with the consequences of living in those staes (bankruptcy, high taxes, Cost of living).
I totally believe that Roe v. Wade needs to be overturned and the decision needs to go back to the states. Your SCOTUS conclusion would seem a tad bit activist on the conservative end.

Thanks Leopard...
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:25PM EST (link)my point here is that I don’t happen to see the SCOTUS ruling I posited as “activist” at all, rather I see it as “restorative”. Roe certainly was an “activist” ruling, creating from whole cloth “rights” that hadn’t existed for nearly 200 years and denying a basic truth that goes back to Hippocrates.
Ruling, in effect, that “history is right” restores the proper balance and produces justice for those least able to defend themselves. I find that to be as far from “activism” as one can get.
I understand that
Leopard1996 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:29PM EST (link)I just have a stronger belief in states rights, and honestly I would believe that in the long run, when the states that are allowing abortion are also the same states that people are leaving in droves because of the higher cost of living because of that and other things that those liberal states try to do, that the practice as some point will be banned.

wilfranc Friday, January 15th at 8:53AM EST (link)The media misses a lot of stories that don’t fit their narratives. Or if they don’t miss them, they don’t understand them. All poor people are not virtuous, etc.
They are people who stereotype based on what they want to believe. They put people in boxes so they can’t hear or see them.
And most of all, it appears that they reason like those at the opposite end of the intellectual pool, those like my high school diploma friend (who isn’t dumb, but gets most of her news from Oprah everyday), who declared that there wasn’t a recession at Christmas because there were lots of people eating out and shopping, and the local casino is full of people spending away (probably their 401ks). I guess she fails to notice as she speeds (literally) through town the closed businesses, the shabbiness of the local supermarket (which she does, and now prefers to shop out of town at the nicer place), the local controversy over laid off school employees (despite campaigning to pass a 17 million bond proposal for the school two years ago).
WFB said it before, those at both ends of the socio-economic-education ladder tend to vote alike. They seem to think alike too.
Yes.

renny (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 11:28AM EST (link)was in my dr.’s office where the tv monitor is set perpetually on whatever station they appear on. It was so long ago Star Jones was still there and Whoopi was just a pipedream in some producer’s mind’s eye.
The entire show was dedicated to why it was important for women to go to strip shows.
Now, actually, due to interminable digressions, the question was never directly answered. But the intent seemed to be: because stripping is vicarious sexual activity, it must not be avoided (by women).
To be liberal is to endorse all sexual activity no matter in what form. Ergo, WOMEN must go to strip joints if they want to be liberal, which is an extensive of being “cool.” Or as my students would say “kew-ool.”
If that convoluted and indirect discussion was an example of intellectual repartee, I’ll be a frog’s fly.

Banjo Friday, January 15th at 9:49AM EST (link)My observation over the years is that the leftism in journalism has more to do with the kind of people drawn to it. They tend to be social activists with a belief in the perfectibility of mankind, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Thus, they think more laws will alter human nature for the better. This, of course, was the basis of “scientific socialism,” the cause of so many scores of millions of deaths in the 20th Century. As Lenin said, you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. The left is always willing to break eggs and the MSM willing to overlook them.
Do you think it will work both ways?

jayburd (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 6:22AM EST (link)A case study of race differences among late abortion patients.
Lynxwiler J, Wilson M.
Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Central Florida, Orlando 32816-1360.
The majority of women who terminate an unwanted pregnancy do so in the first trimester of their pregnancy. A much smaller population postpones their decision into the second trimester. Abortion delays greatly increase the health risks and mental stress experienced by women. We examine 240 women who underwent abortions in the second trimester of their pregnancy. The analysis focuses on characteristics that distinguish between black and white women. A discriminant analysis of the data identifies a number of variables that differentiate blacks from whites. Variables that are associated with black and white women who delay their abortion decision include attitudes toward legal abortion, religiosity, household income, the presence of other children, residence patterns, an unwillingness to disclose the pregnancy, and social support for their decision. Discussion of the findings focuses on the role played by cultural experiences.
PIP: Previous research has revealed that the 9-10% of women who delay induced abortion until the second trimester differ from their counterparts who abort in the first trimester on a number of socioeconomic and psychological factors; the present study indicated that, among late abortion patients, there are substantial racial differences. Questionnaires were administered to 240 women (98 Blacks and 142 Whites) who underwent late abortion (mean gestation of 13.75 weeks) at a private women’s health clinic in Southern US in 1988-89. The finding that 26.74% of early abortion seekers at this clinic were Black and 73.26% were White, while these percentages were 40.83 and 59.17%, respectively, for late aborters indicates that Black women find it more difficult to make the abortion decision. 37% of the Black respondents stated they delayed their decision because they were afraid to inform anyone of their pregnancy, while White respondents were more likely to delay because of fear or ignorance of their pregnancy. Through discriminant analysis, a model was developed that was capable of differentiating between Black and White subjects in 87.57% of cases and accounted for 37.58% of the variance between the two groups of late deciders. The background variables for which they were significant racial differences were: residence (Blacks were more likely to live with their parents r extended family), religiosity (Blacks reported a higher level of religious self-perception), education (Black women had completed more years of schooling), and household income (Whites had higher annual levels). In addition, Black respondents were more likely to have children, score lower on the pro-choice scale, and receive less support for their abortion decision than Whites. The greater acceptance is the Black community of childbearing outside of marriage and use of extended family as caretakers, as well as cultural distrust of abortion, may serve to intensify the intrapsychic and interpersonal conflict among Black women faced with an unwanted pregnancy, thereby contributing to a delay in seeking abortion.

“If the Nation can issue a dollar bond it can issue a dollar bill.
The element that makes the bond good makes the bill good also. The
difference between the bond and the bill is that the bond lets the
money broker collect twice the amount of the bond and an additional 20%.Whereas the currency, the honest sort provided by the Constitution pays nobody but those who contribute in some useful way. It is absurd to say our Country can issue bonds and cannot issue currency. Both are promises to pay, but one fattens the usurer and the other helps the People.” – Thomas A. Edison

rec0n Friday, January 15th at 10:53AM EST (link)when I’m not really irritated anyway, that this term ‘the educated class’ keeps popping up. These people ARE the useful idiots of myth and legend. They’re the gullible ones who believe anything they’re told to, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, or any evidence that supports their latest little political fashion trend.Nuclear power, green economies – have a look at France and Spain? No can do, they say.
They have been trained in those schools of higher learning by the best of the best, of course. The left invaded our schools long ago, and I’d like to see THAT little issue tackled sooner rather than later. And the DOE abolished while we’re at it.
