A Reminder About Haiti

Posted again from yesterday

eds_white.jpgAs we learn more and more about Haiti, we know for sure that nation is truly devastated. The Salvation Army is where I always give money. The organization gives a phenomenal amount of its proceeds to the cause, not to administrative overhead.

Folks, you know I always say give to candidates. But candidates can wait. Relief cannot. Please give what you can.

We can help. Right now the people of Haiti need it.

Thanks.

Update by Jeff: There are several quality organizations working to help the people of Haiti, and your generous donation to any one of them will do immeasurable good for those affected by this horrific tragedy. If you want your personal donation to get the most possible mileage, though, you might consider looking at a smaller, more intimate, Haiti-centric nonprofit like the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty. I’ve donated to them today, as have several of my fellow Contributors.

No matter who you give to, or what you give, though, your generous donations and your efforts to spread the word about these relief organizations truly do make a difference.

Update by Erick: You can also text the word HAITI to 90999 and $10.00 will be added to your phone bill as a contribution from you to the Red Cross.

Why?

uttles (Diary) Thursday, January 14th at 11:36PM EST (link)

Why should we give any money to Haiti? The people of Haiti are responsible for the sorry state of their country. They live in poverty and squaller and then they expect the rest of the world to help them. President Obama already stole 100 million dollars from us and sent it to them, so I say that’s enough.

It's not about Obama

jobless Friday, January 15th at 1:28AM EST (link)

This is about real people suffering for real.
I’ve heard about Christian songs and chants going around at night, people trying to maintain some level of strength – thru God.
Please don’t make this about American politics – this is about human souls of God. Help them, be a servant of God.
Blaming this on Obama is a travesty. This is a true test of God, to see who are the true Christians and help, and who are the fakes and try to turn this into something else.
For me, I’m a Christian, I believe my Soul will be redeemed by doing good by my fellow humans. I truly believe that, especially those Christian brothers and sisters in Haiti, we can do much better monetarily. I’ve given all I can – I hope my Christian Brothers and Sisters can/will do the same.
We’re not talking politics – we’re talking actual human life and/or death.
Sheesh. It shouldn’t be too hard.
I’m saddened by the fact that Palin, O’Reilly, and Hannity feel that this is a political opportunity for them. As does Limbaugh.

For me, as a Christian, this is a complete human experience. God either wants me to help my fellow humans or He doesn’t. For sure He doesn’t want me to politicize this tragedy!!

Again, to me, the earthquake isn’t what God will judge me on.
He’ll judge me on my response to help my fellow humans on this Earth.

I hope I pass His Judgement……

Then you must

Why should we give any money to Haiti??? Well, because we took so much from them.
Please, do give a few minutes (preferably more) of your time and research the history of this nation, and the sometimes-way-too-intimate-relations to the US.
Pftt. In short, just THINK for a effing second before you sentence innocent people to death.
If you cannot THINK, then at least have Faith. If you cannot even have Faith, well……I don’t know.
In that case just leave society and humanity free of your interference.
Try and get at least your GED???

What?

uttles (Diary) Friday, January 15th at 11:10AM EST (link)

What exactly did we take from haiti? Please inform me.

Nobody is blaming this on Obama, and nobody is sentencing anybody.

These people are responsible for their sorry government and their sorry standard of living. If they were responsible human beings, they wouldn’t live in shanty towns and horribly constructed buildings. Why should we pour money into Haiti at this point so that they can just continue on living in prehistoric conditions? What’s the point?

~~~ www.itsmyblog.com
Is this serious?
thegarryargument (Diary) Friday, January 15th at 11:19AM EST (link)
The point is to stop the senseless death of people who are not responsible for their “sorry standards of living.” The hundreds of thousands of children, disabled, or those who might actually be trying to work to improve the conditions of their country. Just as we Conservatives constantly work to improve the condition of our own country, which is of course much better off, it would be simplistic for a foreignor to casually blame us for the current state of big government and debt. But most importantly, the point is…to help others when they are in need. We aren’t simply giving them money because they asked for it, we are giving them money and aid because believe it or not *NEWSFLASH* they are not responsible for an earthquake, and I seriously doubt better constructed buildings would have made a difference for a 7.0 quake.
We once were the beacon of freedom in an otherwise evil world. We are slipping further and further into fascism every day, and it started in 1913.
The people of Haiti are responsible for their own lives, just as we are.
who’s responsible for those good hearted American citizens who volunteered to go to Haiti on behalf of charities, to help diabled children, to help orphans read, to help build schools; and who may now find themselves trapped underneath a slab of concrete from a poorly built orphanage; your message to your fellow American citizens is that they are responsible for the situation they now find themselves in. they should have chosen a ‘safer’ country to help like the Bahamas during non-hurricane season.
They should have stayed here in America and been productive citizens for their own rational self interest. Or if they were hell bent on self sacrifice to the altar of altruism then at least they could have stayed here and helped people here… there are plenty who need it.
Jezus would want us to help them. Period.
So I thank you for shouting out the monetary help that’s needed right now.
I mean, people are hurting, people are dying as we speak.
This may have been God’s doing, but it it may be a test on how we aid our fellow humans. Be they Christians, Voodoos, Hindus, Muslims, whatever. We need to help, period.
People there are hurting, they are dying. It’s our Christian duty to help. Period. Just help and relieve the suffering.
Please…!!!
I was going to explain why we should help when I saw your comment title.
But I’ll say anyway what I was going to say.
I’ve seen the pictures. Earthquakes should not do that much damage these days. It’s clear to me that Haitian infrastructure just is that bad to begin with.
I have no idea how they could ever afford to rebuild, if they couldn’t even afford to build properly in the first place.
it is unfair to blame each individual Hatian for their disfunctional system.
We are fortunate to be Americans, and the price that was paid for our freedom was paid for by others,
Just as no good person can earn God’s grace, few of us have actually paid for our own freedom.
I can take no credit for the Founding Fathers. I receive collateral benefits for their foresight in the same way that Hatians incur collateral damages.
that we are all human. I weep when I think of all the life lost in this terrible tragedy. The only thing that matters right now is these people need help and most of us are in a position to donate a few dollars.
Whenever I see a tragedy like this the thought that comes to mind is there but for the Grace of God go I.
I donated for the simple fact, that well, I care
Have I ever been to Haiti? No, but to see the destruction, to feel it when you see a picture of a parent holding their dead child, and then know they must fight to SURVIVE, en mass, I gave.
Have I ever been to Sumatra? No, but to see the destruction, to attempt to comprehend having your family swept out to sea and then to undertake putting that aside and SURVIVE, en masse, I gave.
There are events that have occurred in my lifetime that I felt compelled to give, there are other events that have occurred that I have not, and felt a little regretful. That being said, as for me and my family, I hope we will always be in a position to help others, if just a little.
Having been unemployed for over 6 months (corporate security-utilities), has given me an opportunity to care for my wife who is experiencing breast cancer (found after I was laid off), and the surgeries, and the chemo, and to yet experience radiation), This upheaval has given me a little more depth, a better appreciation of life, so even now and in the future I hope to give. If not $100, then $25, or $10.
It is a pity to hear the paraphrase: “Catastrophes? Bah Humbug.”
Salvation Army
Hugh Tidwell Friday, January 15th at 9:56AM EST (link)
When Hurricane Rita hit Texas I was deployed as a first responder via the Fire Department. I spent ten days in East Texas and let me tell you. Salvation Army earned my respect and money. I’ve never passed a kettle of Salvation Army without donating money. Anytime we needed something and asked the Salvation Army whether it was blankets, baby food, cots, etc. They came through for the people who needed it. And we are not talking about a day or two after we asked, the same day we made a request we would have it. Typically it would be within a couple of hours.
The Salvation Army, their personal, and everybody associated with them I have always found to be class acts.
Salvation Army - putting $ to work
WmCraig (Diary) Friday, January 15th at 6:58PM EST (link)
Eric,
Thank you for bringing this organization publicity. A friend of mine, who survived the hurricanes in Florida said that Salvation Army was THE one organization that was there doing good work and not using the tragedy to gin up donations for their bank account or charge for their services.
The Salvation Army doesn’t solicit donations when tragedy strikes, only through their Christmas bell ringers. They focus on delivering care, not collecting money.
They do good with the support we give them. Now if only our elected officials could be so frugal and reliable.
