Jed Babbin has today’s top story at Human Events.
Today the Senate will drop its huge lump of coal in our Christmas stockings by passing Harry Reid’s version of the Obamacare bill. And when it’s done, its members can join the already-recessed House for their much-anticipated if not well-earned Christmas vacation.
Congressional recesses, especially the Christmas break, were short vacations from politics until Bill Clinton invented the never-ending campaign. And Barack Obama has made the Clinton method a thousand times worse. In the “crisis for sale” environment Obama created, there is never a respite.
And in the few weeks between today and January 19 when congress reconvenes there will be none. Staff talks have already commenced and the moment they’re back the House-Senate conference on the Obamacare bill will begin. Who can doubt that the “crisis” in healthcare will be more urgent than ever when congress reconvenes?

The Myth of being "in power"
NickDeringer (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 9:47AM EST (link)The Dems are transforming the power structure of the country from the ground up. No matter who’s in the White House they will retain control through layers of bureaucracy populated with their loyal troops. Sen. Rockefeller (D-WV) attacks fellow Dems for vote buying
WarEagle01 (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 10:11AM EST (link)From the NY Times today:
‘Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, Democrat of West Virginia. “This was so wicked. This was so venal.”’
venal
adj
1. easily bribed or corrupted; mercenary a venal magistrate
2. characterized by corruption a venal civilization
3. open to purchase, esp by bribery a venal contract
He could only be referring to members of his own party in that context; e.g. Landrieu’s Louisiana Purchase and the Nelson’s Cornhusker Corruption. There is now other way to read that as far as I can tell.

reddog53 (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 10:16AM EST (link)Everyone should take a step back and wonder “If they controlled everything, why did it come out this way?” It should have been relatively easy to get the staff members that actually craft the bill to use essentially identical language in both bills, making reconciliation easy.
Instead, we have a hodge podge of language piled up twice in ways that make it so twisted that it can’t be smoothly ironed out….and as someone has already mentioned, the Medicare Bill was only 187 pages long–shorter than Baucus’s ‘plain language summary’ of his attempt.
I can’t believe that anyone on the Democrat side can come away from this with any confidence in their team for the future.

The key word here is Leadership vs Management...
AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 10:32AM EST (link)The Dems are sinking like a stone and Republicans COULD capitalize if they show LEADERSHIP from here out…What WON’T work though is sitting back and believing Obama’s negatives automatically applies on the other side of the Talley sheet as a positive for Republicans.
Jed touches on this point but it needs to emphasized more…Voters wanted this thing stopped and Republicans cowered in front of Ried with little more than a squeak of protest as HCR was crammed through …But let me say this…As much as people hate bullies, which Ried and the Dems certainly are…They hold cowering weenies and boot lickers in even lower contempt…I can think of no more of a contemptible site than a Pit Bull crawling on it’s belly dribbling pee on the ground as it slinks up to a another dog and rolling over exposing it’s neck and underbelly…especially when that Bull Dog has a pack of dogs standing behind it ready to tear the Dems apart…
People are repulsed by weakness…and I think Babbin underplays the show of Weakness on full display by McConnell in all this…and unless Republicans start showing a willingness to fight…and the ability to inflict real Damage on the Dems…they will continue drifting into irrelevancy going forward because the people in the tea party movement who are screaming to be heard are not going to take kindly to a Republican Party who won’t rally to their cry any more than they do the Dems who have flown them the bird!

My father had open-heart surgery yesterday.
joayn (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 10:36AM EST (link)Forever young at 83 years, my dad doesn’t miss a beat. He told EVERY doctor, nurse, etc. that if we had Obamacare, he wouldn’t be getting this surgery, probably just a “lifetime” supply of nirtro.
Unfortunately, my father’s twin brother died of a massive heart attack eighteen years ago, waiting for his open-heart surgery at the VA hospital.
Interestingly, my dad hadn’t been to see his cardiologist for some time. Shortly before Thanksgiving, he received a notice from his insurance company suggesting that he see a cardiologist because my dad had been refilling his nitro prescription too often. What’s so interesting about that? Well, my dad’s primary gave him a new prescription because the other was too old. And the insurance company got their wires crossed somehow and thought my dad was getting too may refills. It was a fluke, a mistake on their part that got my dad in to see his doctor. Insurance company = guardian angel? We think so.
Long story short, he saw his doctor, was tested, ended up in the hospital, was sent to USC (the best hospital, evah) and had his surgery, All in the matter of five days. FIVE DAYS. And I won’t even get into the amazing technology used to save my dad’s life.
As I sat in his hospital room before his surgery, I kept thinking, “None of this will exist after a few years of Obamacare, no modern technology, no quality of care, no choice, no freedom.” The most obscene effect will be killing the dedication and spirit of these wonderful, wonderful professionals, who have commited themselves to do everything possible to save lives. Everything will be reduced to who deserves it most. It will not be people like my dad.
Anyway, buck up everybody. We, as a proud nation and resilient people will find a way to defeat this. No matter what. Do not feel defeated. Reject that feeling. This is just one of many battles, and we must believe and fight for what we love, cherish, and believe to be true.
We are the party of “Hell No”, afterall. Also the party of “That’s what you think”, or, “Oh no you don’t”. They will never, never, ever, ever defeat us.

It isn't over!
rsjt Thursday, December 24th at 11:47AM EST (link)Thanks for the encouraging words. And it isn’t over. It has a very real chance to be stopped in the House (wake up Tea Partiers) or the courts.
I agree that we will find a way to defeat this. And even if it passes and the courts give it a stamp of approval, there is no way I will buy Federally mandated anything no matter the consequences. Since I will never participate, the bill is already defeated from my point of view.
Merry Christmas.

Dems Are Manipulating External Events; Next Up - O's State of the Union
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 10:59AM EST (link)First Christmas, next the SOU.
Unfortunately, Obama will most likely get a little bounce after his SOU. I think that may be why they pushed the vote to February. They are going to battle it out in conference. That and this recess will slow momentum for this bill.
Then the Dem leadership will use the State of the Union like they used Christmas. They will be on the brink. TOTUS will go on national TV and talk about how this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then he will hammer jobs. And will say Congress must pass health care and move on to a jobs bill. He’ll get a four or five day spike in the polls.
Reluctant Dems will again feel again the pressure and fold.
I’m still praying for a Scott Brown miracle.

It all depends on whose pork tastes best.
Achance (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 11:03AM EST (link)Republican pork was roads, buildings, and such plus SCHIP and NCLB money. Though the latter two are derided here, they both are important to Republican constituencies. SCHIP is important if you have a kid that doesn’t go to college or right out of college but over 23 doesn’t have health insurance. Unless you can afford to buy a full health insurance policy for them, and not many can, they go without health insurance because almost no policies will cover a dependent over 18 but not in school or over 23. NCLB for all its faults at least puts some standards under the public schools and helped put some brakes on the grade inflation and dumbing down. But the big stuff was the direct and indirect economic stimulation of the economy by Republican style spending and national financial policy that poured money into housing. But it wasn’t enough to overcome Democrat talking down of the biggest boom in history; even at the height of the Bush economy goodly numbers were buying the “worst since the Great Depression” Democrat line. And then when the crunch did come – and I have grave doubts about how it came – the electorate abandoned Republicans.
Comes now the Democrats with a whole new flavor of port. They’re lying about jobs and all that; their pork is specifically targeted to their constituencies and especially to their foot soildiers, the unions and non-profits. They really can’t do anything for their other constituencies such as the young, divorced or never married women, Blacks, Hispanics, etc. because if they actually did anything for them, they’d lose them as a discontented constituency, so they’ll just talk and feel their pain.
We can make some good gains with Rahmbo’s fake Republicans in ’10 and ’12. Whether we can get a majority back or win the Presidency in ’12 depends on how well the Ds have done their math and how good our message and candidates are. If the Ds have their math right, they can keep a minimum winning coalition of the stupid, the looters, the moochers, and the malcontents. If they have 50% +1 with those, we can’t govern but we can have enough votes to keep them from governing and nothing getting done is one Helluva bunch better for the Country than Democrats being able to do the stuff they like to do.

I pray their women back home give them an ass-kicking or threaten divorce (not necessarily go through with it), or something, because obviously .. these weak men aren’t listening to public demand.
Maybe we’re calling the wrong people.
Maybe find Mrs. Senator at the grocery store and give her a good “HOW COULD YOUR HUSBAND DO SUCH A THING!!!”
Right now, they’re surrounding themselves with sycophants who are telling them, “You poor dear, your husband is doing all he can do. Of course he’s doing the right thing.”
Spousal pressure is an incredible thing.
Maybe picket in front of their homes.

Well I don't know about Alaska's Republican State Reps and Senators
Richard Mullins (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 11:28AM EST (link)but down here in Texas, we have a lot that hate SCHIP and defund as much as possible. We have a lot that don’t like it. Alaska's economy is very different from Texas'
Achance (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 11:47AM EST (link)economy. Government in Texas runs at local, county, and state levels and is supported by sales and property taxes principally. Alaska has very little local government and none at all in much of the State. Consequently, almost everything is done at the State level here, including all education and social welfare funding. There is also relatively little small business here, so most work for either government or large employers that provide health insurance or they’re Indians with government health care. Consequently, the people most likely to be uninsured are young people from relatively well off families but who can’t or won’t buy health insurance for themselves and whose parents can’t or won’t cover them. Consequently, there is a middle class, Republican leaning constituency for a program like SCHIP called Denali KidCare which was proposed by a Democrat, Gov. Knowles, but has been funded by a Republican legislature.
And the stuff about how the teachers unions won’t let schools impose standards is just educrat BS. The unions have no bargaining power over educational program or standards anywhere in the Nation. They do have some political power over them but no enforceable rights. If it ain’t wages, hours, or terms and conditions, unions have no power over it but feckless managers and politicians like to use them for an excuse.

Art, I agree on NCLB, but...
Vegas_Rick (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 12:43PM EST (link)not SCHIP. This gap has been there for decades. People should plan. If they don’t, the military will provide excellent health care from 18 to 22. That’s about one hitch.
IMHO entitlement programs are never the answer.

I didn't say I liked either of them, just that they have
Achance (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 1:00PM EST (link)a Republican constituency as well as a Democrat one. I do think that NCLB put a real crimp in what the worst states and school districts were doing, simply dumbing down so everybody could feel good about themselves. I’m disgusted with the way my state has tried to get out of the NCLB standards because of the fact that Alaska Natives do so poorly and the rural schools perform so poorly. Native kids come out of those schools with no work habits and no marketable skills and we wonder why they wind up stumbling around drunk in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks. It is routine for kids to come out of high school with 3.0+ GPAs and when they try to enroll in college test down into remedial English and Math classes that often take up thier first year just to be able to qualify for the none too demanding college level classes.
