Why we must unite behind Nikki Haley. All of us.

Interestingly, as I write this, word comes from the paper that one of the GOP candidates for Governor of South Carolina, has been AWOL from his day job. Gresham Barrett, a South Carolina Congressman, has been absent from more votes in the United States House of Representatives than any other Congressman, Democrat or Republican.

Barrett is, like the other guys in the race, a good guy, but I have to ask what these guys have sacrificed for their principles. We are used to guys compromising in the name of comity and saving face and power. Rarely do we see a politician willing to be punished for sticking up for principles.

That brings up to Nikki Haley. Back in 2008, Nikki Haley was up to be chairman of the South Carolina House’s powerful Labor, Commerce and Industry (LCI) Committee.

Unfortunately for Haley, she had pushed legislation for greater transparency and spending restraint in the state legislature. The Republicans in the state legislature who talk a good game on fiscal conservatism, but don’t practice it, were angry. They told Haley if she did not back down, they would punish her.

She refused. The House Speaker yanked her chairmanship.

Haley, even then, refused to back down and forced an awkward vote for the GOP.

At a time when too many Republicans refuse to fight, Nikki Haley fights. At a time when the rights of the states are under assault from Washington, when the people of the nation are having their wallets, jobs, and lives threatened by an out of touch federal bureaucracy, and when our free market is looked at with contempt by Democrats and many Republicans, we need fighters in charge of the several states.

To paraphrase the first leader of the Republicans, Abraham Lincoln, we can’t spare Nikki Haley. She fights.

Vote for Nikki Haley

Ditto. Ms. Haley is an excellent example of the future of conservatism in America. If we cannot support a candidate like her, we might as well pack it up and go home.

Just saw her speak yesterday and she's a star.

I attended a luncheon Tuesday where she spoke. You touched on this, but in her stump speech, she told us that more than 90% of the legislation that the S.C. Senate passes is by voice vote and I think she said more than 80% of the legislation in the House as well. When she arrived as a freshman representative, she approached the leadership (another source told me it was Speaker Bobby Harrell (R) Rep. Harry Cato (R)) and told them she intended to introduce legislation to eliminate this practice so constituents can track their elected officials records. She was instructed to drop it immediately or she would be stripped of her leadership positions. She was further advised that they did not want their constituents to know how they voted. Other legislation that she is sponsoring requires legislators to report all income to the public and identify the source, to post every dime of state spending online, to forbid legislators or their companies from bidding on or receiving state contracts, to be term limited to 8 years, and finally for the governor and lt. gov. to run as a team. I am so enthusiastic about her efforts because of what I’ve seen for years in the General Assembly. For background, my firm has been involved in litigation against the General Assembly in recent years and obtained a ruling that the General Assembly must follow the state Constitution’s requirement that every act address a single subject and that be reflect in the title (any violation (such as bobtailng unrelated pork or pet projects) voiding the entire act).

Question:

aesthete (Diary) Thursday, December 17th at 3:25PM EST (link)

From almost all sources, I have heard that the governorship of SC is emasculated, and largely irrelevant for spending purposes. I suppose that it’s too late now, but if that is the case, would it not have been better for us to try to get her a seat in the state Senate, or get her a prominent position in the legislative branch where she could do more than us the bully pulpit as the SC legislature spends more?

Thanks for letting us know about Nikki,

This is a great example of the power of the TEA Party movement. When we find a true believer that is willing to take the slings and arrows, if the GOP doesn’t back them, we now have the TEA Party movement that can stand with them and thus fundamentally transform the party back to the party of Lincoln, Abraham not Chaffe.

The only reform candidate

It is refreshing to finally find a candidate with principles and a backbone and willing to stand up to South Carolina’s “good ole boys”. Nikki Haley is the ONLY candidate that has a record of reform, and has paid a price for it, the rest will just tell you what they think you want to hear. It is time to take back our government and let the politicians know that they work for US, not the other way around, a vote for Nikki Haley will do just that.

Nikki Haley is the ONLY rational choice for SC Governor!

Everyone who has listened to Nikki Haley speak or has met her in person and spoken to her, makes an easy and important distinction: she’s a real person. Nikki comes from regular folks who work for a living. She lives among us and can relate to us. She is not a career politician. She refuses to be corrupted by the money spewing power elites in the Statehouse and other elected offices.

In other words, she is in complete contrast to the good ol’ boys running against her:

McMastah does great story-telling in his Foghorn Leghorn style. But he’s about as substantive as his hot air and he creates even more hot air when such grandstanding tactics as going after Craig’s List blows up in his face. He has accomplished nothing significant in ridding our state of corruption and cronyism but instead has contributed to it by accepting campaign contributions from lawyers he hired for a state job:

Bauer gets up and talks a good talk about everything but his extreme carelessness and negligence wherein the NTSB found him fully at fault for crashing his plane and nearly killing himself and a passenger a couple of years ago. If he does not exercise good, sound, mature judgement when his LIFE depends on it, how can we trust him to use good judgement when it does not?

Barrett has that certain blank look in his eyes that makes you want to talk v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y to him. He also has a certain emotional disconnect that was very apparent at the Greenville Tea Party where he tried to speak over all the booing at his support of the massive TARP corporate welfare giveaway. He only showed a little realization at the very end when you could hear his voice break a little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QsY2r7HbTM

I have often wondered at what happened to SC conservatives, electing
Mc Cain and re-electing Ghramnesty. Illegal Amnesty is next on the obamanations’ plate, How will you like your selections then? Don’t play nice with RINO’s your survival is at stake!
