Don’t believe everything you hear. The Senate Democrats are not on the verge of a collapse. They are on the verge of compromising every single thing they want just so they can get a “health care reform” bill passed.
Here’s what I’m being told:
The Democrats have given Joe Lieberman everything he wanted. Joe will now vote for the bill.
Ben Nelson (D-NE) is being threatened with having every major military installation in Nebraska shut down. Yes, I know, but the Democrats are playing for keeps on this and health care “reform” is more important to them than the military.
Liberals are being told they have to accept this to given them any credibility going into next year’s election. They don’t want to be accused of “killing reform.”
Lastly, the CBO scoring of the bill is going to look fine now that the Medicare affecting portions are going to be dropped.
Inevitably, this legislation is going to cause health care costs to skyrocket and force people into socialized medicine.
But Barack Obama and the Democrats don’t care. They want to be seen as doing something and beating the Republicans — with what, they don’t care.

Would Nelson cave? He seems to have more "gravitas" than that
bk (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 9:16AM EST (link)Isn’t a more likely scenario that they figure Snowe will cave and then Nelson can vote with the GOP? Heck if Snowe votes for it, Collins might too in order to try to give Snowe some cover. McConnell and company had better be keeping close tabs on Olympia’s leanings these days.
That will be a real disappointment if Nelson throws his principles under the bus. The Dems screwed him, and now are telling him he’d better smile and say it felt good? Sheesh.
Nelson's Been Bought
farstar99 (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 12:09PM EST (link)And once this passes, the Democrats will write the public option back in.
That’s what happens when you write vague legislation, then reconcile it with an equally vague bill. The party in power can do whatever they want once it’s enabled.
They usually vote together
victoriadelsoul Tuesday, December 15th at 11:01PM EST (link)That’s exactly what I think, as well. The Democrats have the votes to pass any legislation they want. They have had the votes all along and they were always going to pass healthcare, and quite simply, at the end of the day, despite their speeches and any seeming dissension in their ranks, they usually come together as a party and vote the legislation through.
Do they have the votes
roxie123 Wednesday, December 16th at 11:36AM EST (link)The Democrats don’t have to go thru this. Say all the Republicans vote against the bill. That’s 40 nays, Harry can let 10 Dems vote with the Republicans and that would be 50/50. Biden comes in and cast the tie breaker. It seems like the most simple thing to do.

So, if we have killed single payer, or at least the vehicle by which they were going to force us into single-payer (the public “option”), and we have killed the expansion of Medicare that was to be the alternate route for them, isn’t that a win?
I mean, if the bill does not really “do” anything, who cares if they pass it?
Is there a new entitlement or expansion of Medicaid in the bill that is as lethal to our republic as the public option would have been?

Richard Mullins (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 11:26AM EST (link)There not getting much trackson in the Senate. They’ve had 14 days of Debate on this(excluding the days that they Debated the Omnibust bill). Every time the Donks talk they look stupid. I haven’t seen Ben Nelson talking but the Donk that do talk look stupid. I’ve seen Casey,Durbin,Bacus,Reid and a few others. They going on and on about the other side is not sending things to increase care. I think that they keep having the make the bill die for reason of of empty words. I think I saw as a blurb on C-SPAN that they’re going to vote one the Sanders Amendment. That’s another way to kill the bill.

What about the Taxes?
reallyfive Tuesday, December 15th at 11:18AM EST (link)I wonder why we aren’t hearing more about this? My understanding is if this thing gets signed into law, taxes will go up immediately. With the crappy state of the economy and high unemployment, I don’t understand why the R leadership isn’t hammering away at this more. It will just be another nail in the coffin of the economy.
And, personally I need to know what to expect next year. My husband is part owner of a sub-chapter S and I am sure we will take a hit.
not to worry though
bk (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 11:25AM EST (link)Your extra tax payments will go into an ObamaCare “lockbox” – since that worked so well for social security – and 4-5 years from now maybe it will start to benefit you. Or maybe not.

I've seen alot of Hammering on the Question of Taxes
Richard Mullins (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 11:38AM EST (link)Yeah, tax for 10 yrs but only get benefits for 6 yrs. I’ve seen Crapo hammer them on that. In fact, they seem be chipping away at the Donks arguments. They call out the lies but all the Donks have is childish arguments against the other side. The noses of all the Donks that talk keep growing every time.

Yes, I agree . . .
reallyfive Tuesday, December 15th at 12:00PM EST (link)You are right, Richard, I have heard many talk about this aspect of the bill, but what I want to know is specifically what taxes are going up next year. I have heard Rush do a rundown of proposed tax increases, but I don’t remember if that was the house bill, senate bill, or something Harry Reid proposed.
Like many I have come to believe that there is no such animal as a Blue Dog Democrat, but it seems to me that raising taxes right now is the very best reason a D from an R State has to walk away from this bill–forget about abortion, public option, etc. Raising taxes will ensure no chance of recovery any time soon.
Unanimous Consent Agreements
Mayhem (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 12:12PM EST (link)Erick, now would be a great time to start objecting to unanimous consent agreements, wouldn’t you say? If shutting down the Senate is only a last option in their strategy (as they have said), I’d say events have shifted significantly enough in the last 48 hours to constitute nuclear war on the Senate floor, no?
If this bill won’t die a natural death before Christmas, then the GOP needs to abort it forcefully.

My guess is the same people that have us wilderness camping underestimated the extreme lengths Democrats would go to destroy our countries’ fiscal health, health care system and capitalist system. But don’t act surprised, you don’t look good in that color Mr. consultant, political operative and party “leader”.
Counting on failure is not a strategy when your opponent keeps shifting the goals. They effectively have kept Republican fools running in circles not knowing which piece of this filth to draw the Democrats name on with crayon. In the meantime there has been no effective, coherent and constant explication of the Republican alternatives- sans a few stuttering retorts on the weekend shows (that’s for you Mitch).
When are we going to learn that the same clowns who got us in this mess are still running around the capital, frothing at the mouth for another chance to take power? They will try to ride a wave of populism and cloak themselves in fundamentally conservative principals as a means of regaining power. Then in the end sell us out again.
Why do you think the party has so much power attracting the constituency they want even in this environment- bad deodorant? No it’s the stench of these stale old losers on the front bench.
Was that a rant? No, actually a diatribe.

UnEmployment to soar, as Worst of All Worlds HC Bill moves forward...
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 1:16PM EST (link)another reason that Democrats will be thankful the actual full downside doesn’t start right away as they know they will have to campaign (to their base groups, anyway, not necessarily openly in public) for the need to be reelected so they can work on “fixing” the mess they will have just made and that fix will be PUBLIC OPTION fiasco yet again. Because, of course, the reality is that SOME businesses (mainly run by Liberal Democrats, I know one idiot personally (hey John) that has been pushing this/that for years – which, of course, is a poor “business model” as well as Political one) were looking forward to having somewhere to DUMP employees into so as to make up for the increased taxes they would have to pay. It will be impossible for organizations to maintain levels of employment and onerus tax increases – unemployment will be going much higher over the next year. Democrats have it in their brains that if we impose Single Payer upon America it will allow American businesses to be more competitive – not ever bothering to figure out that those EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE MANNER BY WHICH TO COVER PEOPLE WITH HEALTH-CARE (ignoring the drop in quality) will be more imposing than any amounts they would “SAVE” by not paying employees HC Insurance DIRECTLY. Democrats can’t grasp basic math that saving someone X but imposing X times 2 costs on them ISN’T SAVINGS! Which is exactly the same Budget gimmicks they are trying to use to lie about the cost of these Obamaocare attempts.

I suspect we”ll keep about half of the Blue Dogs like Dan Boren and Walt Minnick. Others will bolt because the Bill has been stripped of the Public Option.
Somehow, we need about 20 to 30 of the most radical members ofthe House vote no. They hate this Bill now. Kos is beside himself. It may be time to go underground and show our liberal friends some disengenuous support.
The Dem leaders sold out on abortion, immigration, the public option, … VOTE NO!!!
Cao will likely vote NO and Stupak may do the same
bk (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 3:18PM EST (link)That would put it 218-217 of all else stayed the same. Would at least one of Stupak’s friends join him? Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 3:34PM EST (link)Whatever gets back to the house will be much more moderate. It wont have a Publc Option and it will have better cost containments. Are you saying...
LibertarianHawk (Diary) Tuesday, December 15th at 4:22PM EST (link)….that half of the Blue Dogs will vote against the bill because there’s no public option?
I’m guessing that virtually all of the Blue Dogs will vote for anything resembling the Senate bill. In fact, they’re all probably thanking their lucky stars they’ll have an opportunity to.
The big question mark is abortion. And some of them (including my Blue Dog congressman, Brad Ellsworth) have said that their support hinges on this and not the public option.
He’s said that he will not vote for any bill that doesn’t include something like the Stupak-Pitts amendment. He did, however, vote for the House version of the bill.
As for defectors, it’s the hard lefties (Schakowsky, Weiner, Woolsey, Frank, Grayson, etal) they’ll need to try to hang onto…..
…assuming, of course, they don’t get any Republican votes other than Cao.

Oh, and btw, whether you like the bill or not (It does not seem, unfortunately, to bend the cost curve down, rather is just a redistributive program), it is not “Socialist”.
I don't think that word means what you think it means
cwilson (Diary) Wednesday, December 16th at 8:00AM EST (link)I’m sorry passerby, but redistribution is the HEART of socialism. (That, and the subordination of the individual to the collective of ‘society’ — as dictated by the government).
“Spread the wealth around” (Obama)
“We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.” (Hillary)
“From each according to their ability, to each according to their need” (Marx)
Are these statements also just “redistribution” and not “socialist”? And I think the subordination of the individual to the collective is pretty clear in this Hellth Care bill, as well, what with the “Comparative Effectiveness” studies (IOW, the Death Panel backup plan) and all.

Socialism and Social Welfare are two seperate things
passerby825 Wednesday, December 16th at 9:12PM EST (link)Redistribution is just one part of what socialism though. Socialism is government take over of industry, which this is not (Socialized medicine would be the government actually running the hospitals). This is merely additional regulation and redistribution, which should be criticized on its own merit, rather then lumped in with a socialist straw-man.
"running the hospitals"
cwilson (Diary) Monday, December 21st at 10:27AM EST (link)Under this bill, the government determines (a) who is treated (b) what they are treated for (c) how much the provider is paid (d) the hours the provider’s employers work (e) how much the provider pays its suppliers (f) which suppliers the provider may purchase from, and (g) all procedures — business, financial, and medical — the provider uses.
What part of this is not “running the hospitals”?
See, this is the rhetorical trap these statists use. “See, we won’t ‘take over’ the medical industry, we just want to ‘tweak’ stuff around the ‘edges’ with ‘minor regulation’ so that it’s more fair” — but their ‘tweaks’ and ‘edges’ amount to reconfiguring the entire pie. It’s socialized medicine, with puppets.
And if you can’t see that, passerby, then you’ve been asleep for 40 years. You just aren’t paying attention — or you’re a troll.

Unfortunately for you, it has been proven to be so. Perhaps you might like to go over to question the Dems on their statements and figures? Because you would probably be very happy to catch them in some lies and misstated figures.
I mean, you would, wouldn’t you?
I apologize
passerby825 Thursday, December 24th at 8:23PM EST (link)I’m sorry that I challenged your assertions. I promise not to question what is said here and I will, from now on, blindly accept what I read here as fact.
Now, back to the topic at hand; This bill keeps in place privately owned hospitals, privately owned insurance, and employer based insurance. It has a number of committees set up to analyze the effectiveness of certain procedures and regulations, it provides consumer protections (such as the whole “Pre-existing condition” thing you keep hearing about), it forces people to buy insurance, and it provides subsidies for those who can’t afford insurance. That is what is in the bill. It does not interfere with providing medical care, it does not rearrange or take over the entire health care industry, what it does is sets down some regulations, and provides money to those who can’t buy insurance.
Now, if you want to be against that, go ahead, there is plenty to be against, the amount of power bureaucratic agencies have, the increased strain on our system to provide for 30 million more people with care, the morality, and constitutionality, of an individual mandate, the fact that others will have to pay to cover those with Pre-existing conditions, the fact that it does not bend the cost curve down, or maybe even just the idea that it is a welfare program that will redistribute money to those who are too poor to buy their own insurance. But it is NOT a fundamental restructuring, or take over, of our Health Care System. Attack the bill for what is in it, not for imagined threats that don’t exist.
What a Shame

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Offut AFB is home to US Strategic Command.
Closing a military base is one thing. Evicting an active command-and-control headquarters is quite another.
Now would be a great time for Senate Republicans to ask where the Senate majorty plans to relocate the combatant command charged with space operations and strategic deterrence.
It would be golden if we could find out what Senate Dems made this threat. Then, it would be platinum to call them out in public, and force them to defend their move.
