The Wall Street Journal reports Joe Lieberman is digging in his heels. He will filibuster any health care legislation that contains a public option, even if the legislation allows states to opt-out.
Lieberman has been a thorn in the side of the left ever since they decided to challenge him back in 2006. In that year, the left beat Lieberman in the Connecticut Democrat Primary. Lieberman decided to stay in as an independent in the general election and won. With a number of his long time Senate friends endorsing the Democrat in 2006 because the man had a “D” next to his name, Lieberman has been his own man ever since.
Lieberman retains his Senate committee chairmanship and the privileges of being a Democrat member of the Senate. That may change soon as Harry Reid is staking his reputation on passage of the health care legislation.

Even here in Arkansas MoveOn.org has threatened Blanche Lincoln with a primary opponent if she votes no on Obamacare. Where do these fools think Blanche lives? San Francisco? This is ARKANSAS and we supported McCain by 20 points over Obama. Most recent polls have opposition to Obamacare here at 70%.
I really want the Left to challenge all of the moderates in the Democrat party so they are even easier for the GOP candidate to defeat. They are like foaming at the mouth dogs.

Kyle Constable (Diary) Monday, November 23rd at 10:52PM EST (link)…I have a lot of respect for Lieberman. I may not agree with him 100% of the time but I know when the fate of the country is at stake we can trust him to make the right decision. I was born in Connecticut and my parents voted for him because they knew that he had what is good for the country on his mind. On that note, I would prefer someone more Conservative in his seat, but I think everyone knows that the likelihood of that is slim, as of right now. I’d prefer Lieberman over a crazy liberal loon any day.

A short letter just penned and being sent via USPS to the good Senator's office:
Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, November 23rd at 11:23PM EST (link)Senator Lieberman:
I sincerely believe you understand that this is not a game.
However, of all the people on the floor of The Senate, I expect you to have enough respect for the American people to actually read the legislation and then inform your colleagues on all sides and through every media outlet available to you – citing specific items in the Bill – that it is filled with nation-killing regulations and has nothing whatsoever to do with health or care for anyone.
This legislation is all about complete and total control over the lives of every single person in The United States and true to our rule of law and over 234 years of history, is not acceptable to a free and sovereign nation and her people.
Thank you for your time.
The Republicans should invite Lieberman over.
Third Street (Diary) Monday, November 23rd at 11:45PM EST (link)I never thought I’d say that, as I’ve loathed and distrusted him since he dutifully played his role in Al Gore’s attempted election theft. Lieberman is a solid liberal and therefore would likely create headaches for us further down the road. The GOP could offer him little other than promises that he would be able to retain his chairmanship if they retake the Senate — which would be a very big “if” — and that they would not put up a Republican candidate with which to split the CT electorate in 2012. But if Lieberman really is going to dig in his heels over health care then Reid will probably strip him of the chairmanship anyway, and maybe we could convince him it would be in his long-term interests to join us.
I don’t particularly want Lieberman with the GOP, but if the Senate Republicans could secure a solid 41st vote against cloture on this bill it would all be worth it. Get his buddy McCain to sweet-talk him over. Invite him to switch parties; let him stay Independent and just come over to the caucus; whatever. We are coming right down to the line on this and stopping national health care right now is worth whatever other headaches we might have to deal with later.

clowngirl (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 12:14AM EST (link)and there is a place for pragmatism. The Democrats convinced a Republican to flip back in 2001.
But I’m not as convinced as you are that Lieberman is a solid liberal. During the campaign he talked about how the Democratic party has moved so far left as to be virtually unrecognizable. He sounds like a Clinton Democrat. A lot of Clinton Democrats are now Republicans.
He endorsed McCain – foreign policy seems to be what he cares most about and there he might as well be a Republican.
If he were a private citizen he’d probably have switched his affiliation long ago.
Now he’s stuck in no-man’s land. Somebody should sell the guy on across-the-board conservatism.
Agreed. Lieberman is rock solid on foreign policy.
6eorge Jetson (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 1:13AM EST (link)Even in the face of Democratic dogma. So he’s got one of the three stools.
If he helps us defeat ZeroCare, I’ll give him an honorary fiscal stool. Yeah, he’ll probably vote against us 80-90% of the time, but casting the deciding vote for the good guys on the most destructive piece of legislation we’ll see in our lifetimes would likely be more impactful than a slew of non-deciding groaners on lesser issues.
No, Joe is not a Clinton Democrat
civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 1:24AM EST (link)Joe Lieberman is a classic liberal Northeast Democrat from before the 60s radicals turned the Democratic party into the hate-America movement that found its apotheosis in Obama. Lieberman is pro-defense, believer in Judeo-Christian values who is finding his liberal trust in the power of government to effect social good challenged by the Marxists running the party,
The Clintons are socialists and relativists, which Joe emphatically is not.
But at a visceral level, I don’t think Joe’s capable of identifying himself as a Republican, for reasons too complex to elaborate on in a late-night comment.
Hard to know where he’s going to end up on ObamaCare. But he does at least have certain convictions that are not for sale.

Even if he stayed an Independent but caucused with Republicans
clowngirl (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 1:42AM EST (link)it might bring him over to our side on some important votes. For example – he didn’t seem too enthusiastic over the stimulus – that vote was probably just out of party loyalty or pressures.
I’m not saying he’s close to Republican now – but people do change their minds. Private citizens do it all the time. I wonder if anybody’s ever sat Senator Lieberman down and talked persuasively about the principles of conservatism (I would think so considering he spent so much time campaigning for McCain – presumably surrounded by Republicans with the same idea as me)
He has the sense to oppose the public option – and to take a stand on it. That’s gotta be coming from some instinct that’s not fully liberal.
Joe's liberalism is not today's liberalism
civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 1:58AM EST (link)But he’ll almost certainly never embrace “conservatism” as that has too many viscerally uncomfortable connotations and associations, even though the conservatism of his formative years is not today’s conservatism.
But what you’re hoping has happened already – he has been on “our side” on a number of important foreign policy issues, especially Iran and a strong pro-Israel and pro-democracy. I don’t know whether he’s been on “our side” with any of his domestic policy votes
I’ve already mentioned his quandary on domestic policy – his party is also abandoning him, as it previously did on foreign policy – and he knows that a strong economy is the heart of a strong international presence.
He reach an accomodation with the Democratic party to caucus with them in return for keeping his seniority and chairmanships. If Reid makes the caucus loyalty ultimatum regarding his ObamaCare votes, then we’ll see what stuff Joe’s truly made of.

I don't think he'll switch either
JoeG Tuesday, November 24th at 10:38AM EST (link)But we’re fools if we try to split the vote against him. I don’t think a R can win and if we did pull it off it will be a one term event. More likely is some far left nutjob winning.

larryp Tuesday, November 24th at 12:07AM EST (link)Lieberman is a DEMOICRAT. He is a liberal democrat. He has no place to g. He has an ACU rating of 8 out of 100. That is practically the lowest.
Note this public option is a scam, It can be ostensibly removed to get a vote from Lieberman or some other Sen. Then it can be returned, stealthily. Also there is the Health Care Commisioner as desc in HR 3200. Virtually unlimited power. He/She can put backt he Public OPtion.

Erick - compile the clips and play them often
jonbingham (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 9:38AM EST (link)For the Democrats who make claims about being opposed to certain significant features of the Reid bill (Lieberman, Landrieu, Lincoln, Nelson, Bayh?, others?), gather the video, audio and quotes for a 2-3 minute compilation to hold them accountable to their statements. You may wish to develop a second compilation of clips of liberal Democrats demanding the opposite features.
Better yet, how about video(s) showing Lieberman’s opposition to the public option and a liberal Senate Democrat’s demand for a public option followed by “One or the other must vote against cloture.” Do the same with Nelson on abortion and Landrieu and Lincoln on those or other pertinent issues.
Make it so…

Everyone on this post should Encourage Senator Lieberman
danielbdp (Diary) Tuesday, November 24th at 10:58AM EST (link)I just did so myself, via phone and e-mail, never mind I’m from NJ. Politicians LOVE to feel appreciated, as he surely did after winning in CT in 2006 despite the Dem machine against him.
I agree with those on this post, that suggest the GOP should find him a home, to retain as much seniority as possible, should Reid “strip” him. Incidentally, would provide a stark contrast to what the Dems did to “Benedict” Arnold, for every American to see there’s still a difference between the parties worth considering at the ballot box in 2010 & 2012.
I’m also going to (hold my nose and) send e-mails to the Maine twins for standing firm with the Reps…sort of a pre-emptive stroke of their egos…cannot hurt…
Worried about Snowe, not Lieberman
countessolenska Tuesday, November 24th at 6:20PM EST (link)When it comes to the “public option,” I am worried more about Snowe now than Lieberman. Joe has pretty plainly stated that he would oppose the public option in whatever form it takes. Snowe did support a “trigger” as a compromise before Harry Reid inserted the “opt-out” public option.
My question is, are there other things in the Reid bill that Snowe opposes that would prevent her from voting for the legislation? From what I gather, the White House wants to present a bill to the public that they can say is bipartisan, and are trying to woo Snowe and Collins. Will it work? Can Republicans keep their caucus in line?
Bob Corker on Hardball
countessolenska Tuesday, November 24th at 6:54PM EST (link)Republican Senator Bob Corker was on Hardball last night and he did great. I really, really, really wish that we could throw out these Democrat bills and start over with Republican ideas.
If a health care vote can be delayed, and if Republicans were to make significant gains or win one House of Congress in the midterms, the health care bill probably would look very different than it does now.
