I just joined Red State. I'm a well-known lexicographer and perhaps can help you write a 'Red State lexicon" of words and phrases.

In no particular order:

. EDITING--I've noticed after I click "send" and re-read later what I've sent, there are some typing mistakes. I'd like to be able to correct them--especially in a diary.

. RECOMMENDING NEWS ARTICLES--I felt that Charles Krauthammer's recent column was especially noteworthy because he used his psychiatric training to comment of the Fort Hood psychiatrist-killer. I was told that merely recommending an article is not really a "diary." At Little Green Footballs (I hate mentioning that site now), you can recommend articles. Why not here?

. WRITING PRIVATE MESSAGES TO OTHERS--Good idea. We have this at the Room Eight (NYC politics) site that I sometimes contributed to, although it was rarely used.

. NOTIFICATION--Another good idea. Although I do so much on the internet in so many places, I'd rather not have the clutter. If I comment on Hot Air, for example, I don't need to be told that 200 comments have followed mine.

Two kids--gotta go!

... maybe just implemented as a second column under "My Profile"; useful, eg., if someone goes thread-diving to insult you a few weeks after the fact.

For newbies I would not recommend assuming folks who comment on military affairs have never served in the armed forces. This community has a healthy depth of experience in this area, so try to avoid that icky cowpie that folks seem to step in (to my amusement) fairly consistently.

Hate to rain on Streiff's party, but I thought fair warning was only fair. I mean, it gets downright cringeworthy.

Don't worry, people that dense won't read this.

some sort of notification when someone comments on either a diary or a comment I posted. It can get difficult to remember all the diaries I've commented on, but it's fun to see when people respond.

To build a more cohesive community, Mr. Erickson, the following might be considered:

The ability to send messages privately to other members within the site (a little less of a hassle than e-mail, and since one's email address is not used, a way to avoid spam, yet connect privately with other members.)

The ability to edit Comments rather than only the Diary.

Emoticons to indicate e.g. irony and other subtleties: how many comments are misinterpreted daily, causing mini-battles among people who actually agree?

Not complaints, just ideas which seem easy to implement. Prhaps they are not: I am a member of non-political websites, which have the above capabilities, and they are nice features I miss here.

Thank you!
