by 2.6 to 1 over Hoffman. That's troubling and it must be corrected. That's what put Owens over the top.

and secondly, I happy you seems to understand things now. We won anyway because of the fact that the Democrats assault on the GOP in the form of DeDe Scozzafava lost out.

Friend, you are talking sense to me and I hear you. God, how I wish I could vote Libertarian, and know it would mean something. Since I was 20, I was an advocate of Austrian Economics and limited government. So, I am by all counts a true Libertarian. The problem has always been I had to pick the lesser taskmaster; that’s the one who would deliver only ten lashes instead of 20. I would rather be free of our government, and receive NO lashes. But alas, we have a two party system. And voting my true conscience would only water down the chances of getting the lesser taskmaster.

Can conservatives live with moderates? I have for all my life. Do I like it? Absolutely not. And, I often remain a sore loser. It is very hard for me to crawl off and just lick my wounds. I have to unload on someone, and Eric was the target of choice today.

Sometimes I feel our position is hopeless. Honorable , but hopeless. Between the liberals and a liberal biased media, we must fight on too many fronts. And, when we then fight among ourselves, we are really in trouble. Where was the GOP when Hoffman came onto the scene? Where were the funds he needed to put up a better fight? How did Scorzzafava get into Congress in the first place as a Republican?… See what I mean? This is the stuff I dwell on, and at times, it seems a hopeless battle. To change the Republican party is going to be a major undertaking. But you are right. We have to do it.

coming from the party of abortion and euthanasia. Oh yeah, and also the party of lies and personal assaults, and union thuggery and welfare plantation mentality, and marxist economics.

Go ahead and spin it anyway you like, we might still be the stupid party but you are the evil party and you lost big time in these last elections. You can only win when the people are angry and your candidates lie and tell the public they are centrists.

Marty, I understand and feel the loss as well, but you should see the wisdom and the light of letting a loser like Scozzifava fail, and although Hoffman did not prevail as we all had hoped for, we did in fact...win.
Ok...we didn't get our guy. Understood. But we wound up with a Democrat more conservative than our party line.
It is in all honesty, a hard sell...but we accomplished the elimination of a RHINO sellout. THAT, IN ITSELF, IS A WIN.
Small, though it may be, still a win of sorts.
Stay on board, help us re-form, from within, the conservative ideal.
In this game, we have to play long. I was no happier than you to see the loss, but dang, for a third party with a total sellout by the GOP nominee... we did well.If Scozzifava had backed Hoffman, we may well have had the alternative outcome. If the GOP and RNCC would have backed him, it would have been sealed.
Be that as it may, the conservatives have shown their viability, and will continue to do so. We need you, and everyone else who wants to put this country back on track, to stand together and fight for the future. We have to work together, and from inside the GOP to pull it. Yes, there are other parties...but our best shot comes from internal reform. We must expunge the political opportunists such as McCain, Snowe and Steele, even if it should cost us a few bottom line seats, in order to rally and consolidate the conservative movement which is ours.If our strategy is based upon our ideals, the path to victory will lay itself out before us.
 Keep the faith.
 Sincerely,
 Alaska Mark

You show me a good loser, and I'll show you a REAL loser. One more vote for the Democrats, gosh, as a conservative I feel all warm and fuzzy now..

to me is derogatory. Next as Hooah said, the pain subsides once you realize how your problem solving skills and rational thought processes are equivalent of a 10 grade inner city school public education, or you went to Ivy league school and just graduated.

America has changed

by Doug Hoffman, posted election night 09

America has changed, and you have helped. Although we did not succeed in winning this election, we have succeeded in making sure political parties and special interests no longer take the people for granted. I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns.

I congratulate Bill Owens on a hard won victory. In our tradition of free elections, our country continues. And although Bill Owens has won, I believe America is turning the page to a new dawn.

The ideas of freedom, sound fiscal management and citizen government have sprung back into our consciousness. Our founding fathers would be proud of New York 23. It was here that our principles, those that have been the foundation of our nation, came back to life with a vengeance. And it was here that the people rose up against the political bosses who tried to impose their will. It was here that people reached out to control their own destinies again.

Despite the election results, I am optimistic for our future, because now I know that I am not alone in wanting to repair our great nation. Throughout this campaign I have been inspired by the outpouring of support and the intensity of that support.

I’ve met many different people in this campaign, from many walks of life and many professions; each with a different personal story to share. Yet we are all united in the belief that by participating in democracy, we could inspire change.

I urge that no one feel defeated, for this was only one of many elections. We came close, we put our agenda in front of the nation and the nation took notice. The worse thing we could do now, is not continue forward. Next year there are other elections and other candidates who have drawn inspiration from our efforts.

I would like to thank all of you who placed your faith in me, who worked tirelessly and shared your enthusiasm with those around you. You are all patriots, you have all stood up for your country and I am honored to stand among you.

Thank you,

Doug Hoffman

the GOP will the the poorer for it -- we will have lost one of the most insightful and effective conservative advocates on the last 30 years. As Martellus said, "Newt Gingrich...has done more for Republicans and conservatives then anyone posting on this blog."

... it's a win for Republicans? I like the way you think, Erick.

The Republicans need many more "wins" like this to earn a place in the dumpster of history. They will be in good company, with "trickle-down economics" and "separate but equal" to keep them warm.

The "third party route" you push is splitting voters away from the Republicans because the biggest 3rd party is the Independents, who used to vote Republican far more often than Democratic. Not anymore.

Independents now see the Republicans have become the worst kind of Liberals, burning through money, troops, goodwill and the Constitution at a rate that makes Democrats look like the love children of Hetty Green and Jack Benny. (Famous misers, for those under 60.)

The GOP lost in a district they have held since the Civil War, for two reasons. Changing demographics (less WASPs per acre) and changing the GOP from a pro-business party to a pro-death funeral party.

Look at the new Republican values. Torture, race-baiting, warrantless wiretapping, protecting companies from lawsuits by rape victims, wife-swapping, coke-snorting, child prostitution rings and death squads, secret prisons, clinic bombings, assassinations, prison without trial and of course, war, war, endless war.

The GOP should change their logo to the "Totenkopf" death's head favored by the Nazi SS. Maybe they could dig up the corpse of the benzedrine-addicted sociopath and rape-fantasy writer Ayn Rand to run her on the "I ? Serial Killers" ticket with Edward Wycoff.

Oh, wait, that would be truth in advertising. Never mind.

The “third party route” you push is splitting voters away from the Republicans because the biggest 3rd party is the Independents, who used to vote Republican far more often than Democratic.

The GOP should change their logo to the “Totenkopf” death’s head favored by the Nazi SS. Maybe they could dig up the corpse of the benzedrine-addicted sociopath and rape-fantasy writer Ayn Rand to run her on the “I ? Serial Killers” ticket with Edward Wycoff.

Oh, wait, that would be truth in advertising. Never mind.

By the R-endorsed candidate I didn't mean R party endorsement but rather endorsement by the R candidate, which wasn't clear from the way I said it. I was trying to poke fun at how the Dems were trying to find ANYTHING to spin in a positive light, such as Madcow opening her show Monday with the "good" news that a Republican would not win NY-23. They were grasping at straws like crazy and still are.

But I'm serious: If you're going to advocate in the future people leaving the GOP in general elections as a general rule, for punishing the party or any other reason, you're going to get banned.

If you don't like it, go post somewhere else.
