that with the Republican Party so much resembling Democrat-lite, conservatives would do better controlling Congress and letting the Democrats have the White House. We could raise enough hell to change things considerably, it seems to me.

Good comments here.

The only “Conservative Base” that really matters to the incumbents is the Conservative Base within the Party itself, in the precinct committeemen ranks. Because THAT “Conservative Base,” if it exists, can elect conservatives to the leadership positions at the local, county, state and national levels. And vote to endorse the conservative candidates in the primary elections. See my comments above.

Our problem, as conservatives, as I see it, is too many of us “took our ball and went home” or never got into the ball game of party politics to begin with. If you want to change the Republican Party, the real way to do it is from the “inside” of the Party as a functioning member of it, a member who can vote for the leadership and vote to endorse primary candidates. Only precinct committeemen (might have a different name in your state) get to do that.
Here’s an overview, for example, in Arizona, where, in 2008, TWO-THIRDS of the PC slots were VACANT and the one third that were filled were split about 50-50 between McCain-moderates and conservatives. Can you say “ineffectual?”

have to re-earn anything. They need to know that we’re coming for them and we will not stop until the last squish goes home to sell cars again. We’ve given them ample opportunity to get the message, but they refuse to think that we’re serious.

If you want to change this, then don’t bother with the earfuls to the ones who are the squishy leaders, become a part of the new wave that will wash them away by activism, not criticism alone.

I just meant that the Republican party has to re-earn the right to call us the base. They way the “leaders” are acting (based on who they are supporting), people should be talking about the Republican’s moderate base – not any conservative base. After all, who do they want to get to come out and vote for Scozzafava – moderates – so that must be their base. I agree, that we just want to revitalize the Republican Party by getting it back to its conservative principles, that is why we are supporting Hoffman – not a Republican. That is why we support other local candidates that are conservatives. That is why we give Sessions, Cornyn, McConnell, Steele, et al. an earful every chance we get. And that is why we applaud Republicans willing to break with their party to do what is right. We hope that party leaders will learn, so that we can stand up and say proudly that we are part of the base – again.

We’ve had the last year to stop the whining and get down to brass tacks. We’ve looked at the alternatives and there are none. Either we take back the party and implement the policies that we say we believe in, or all of us are lost.

Standing on your wounded feelings won’t help any of us, and it certainly won’t help you. Move yourself, man, and help us get the job done.

I know what the conservative base used to be, and I proudly considerred myself a part of it. However, having been taken for granted, and ignored for almost two decades, I became an independent conservative. And, the more I read from individuals here and elsewhere, the more I realize I am not alone. So, how can I be a part of the Republican’s “Conservative Base” if I am not a Republican? I will no longer support the lesser of two evils – to do so would still be to support evil. They have to re-earn my support – they have to start walkin’-the-walk. Talk won’t cut it anymore. Armey, Bachmann, Pence, Palin, Tiahrt – they acted – against the party, but for America. I will support them – anyplace – anytime.

Love of country and family is what drives us to do what we can, be it donations of cash or time to conservative candidates. If those who showed such passion at the tea parties (still ongoing) and townhalls keep it up and turn that energy into joining their local GOP we can win in 2010 and beyond. The Hoffman surge and McDonnell is proof of that. I'm not counting Christie in NJ out either, for the same reason. Janis, if you want to see the nastiness of the left on display and see the vaidation of your "constant rage" comment, get a twitter account and see how they troll the #TCOT, #IamtheMob, and other conservative threads. On second thought, maybe you don't want to see that...
