Armando Gutierrez for US Congress

Meet Armando Gutierrez. He will be challenging Alan Grayson in Florida’s 8th Congressional District.

RedState endorsed Congressman Tom Rooney in his successful bid for FL-16 and now Tom Rooney is joining Congressman Gus Bilirakis in endorsing Armando Gutierrez.

I’m not endorsing him yet, but I’m intrigued and glad we have a credible candidate. I’m certainly going to be looking at Gutierrez. A number of my good friends whose judgment I trust without reservation are lining up behind him quickly.

This guy is my age.

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 7:16PM EST (link)

He’s too young to be in Congress. Yes, I think I am too young to be in Congress.

Yes, I know he meets the Constitutional requirements. But he’s too young.

I know some great people have done it before, but I’d perfer a more experienced candidate.

Armando Gutierrez, is what the Republican Party needs!

Age does not equal quality or experience.

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 8:12PM EST (link)

It simply means he may be able to better relate to the 18-35 crowd. I would like to know more about his baclground, but I agree with dforston below, if he’s run a business, he’s got more useful experience than the President.

the guy has two masters degrees

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 8:56PM EST (link)

There’s nothing wrong with that, but it does seem to mean that unless he’s some sort of insane overachiever, he couldn’t possibly have been in business more then two/three years before running for Congress.

I’m not saying he’s a bad guy, I’m not saying I wouldn’t even vote for him. I’m merely saying that between some guy in his late 20′s and a more experienced candidate, I’d prefer a more experienced candidate.

I’m still hoping Daniel Webster changes his mind.

Define a "more experienced" candidate.

What would meet your criteria?

Personally

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 11:05PM EST (link)

I’d like him to be over 30 and have at least 5 years of actually doing something, at the very least, for Congress.

I might be a little more lenient for City Council, State Legislature, etc. but I think throwing someone my age into Congress is just asking them to get a swelled head and a warped understanding of what they are doing and their own importance. I realize this is not a hard and fast rule, and I’m not totally opposed to everyone who is younger categorically, but I view it as a minus and would prefer someone older and more experienced.

Too young to be in Congress, eh?

and to use what criteria I deem worthy to judge who is fit for office.

And I say it’s best if he were a few years older, and I’d favor someone else if another realistic person runs in the primary.

No it doesn't.

Danielle Davis (ocleverone) (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 11:28PM EST (link)

There is nowhere in the Constitution that guarantees your right to vote.

The Constitution states that you cannot be denied the right to vote based on race or gender. It never implicitly states you have the right to vote.

Voting “rights” are determined by the state in which you are registered (or wish to register) to vote.

Free speech is a right, bearing arms is a right, voting is a privilege.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it. — Margaret Thatcher

I know.

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 11:01PM EST (link)

Yes, I think he’s too young too. I would have voted against him in the primary, and I said so at the time.

Its not that he’s a bad person, or that I wouldn’t vote for him in the general, it’s just that I think the country is better served by people who have a bit more wisdom and experience.

Aaron Schock

redtillimdead (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 9:53PM EST (link)

He’s a 28 yr old congressman. Age has nothing to do with the equation my friend. A successful businessman who understands how the government works and what the government should do and not do would make a fantastic congressman. I’d prefer a 30-something Conservative with a bright future who knows what is right for this country than the career politicians who have held multiple offices in 30 years.

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

This guy isn't 30 something, he's 28.

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 11:02PM EST (link)

If he were 35, that would be OK. I just happen to think he’s too young and that includes Shock.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t vote for him if push came to shove, I just think the country is better served by some older people with more experience and wisdom.

Wrong attitude

charliesmith Wednesday, October 21st at 1:09AM EST (link)

I’m not denying your right to vote based on whatever criteria you set for yourself, but I will say that it’s the attitude you have expressed here that contributes to young people viewing our party in a negative light. It’s like walking into a room and immediately knowing you’re not welcome.

We should be thrilled to have young leaders running for office as members of the Republican Party/conservative movement.

Also, personally knowing Armando, I can tell you that he is a very talented young person who will serve Florida very well.

Lastly, may I remind you that Thomas Jefferson was 33 years old when he wrote the Constitution. I am in no way comparing the abilities of Armando and Jefferson, but am simply stating that age should not be an automatic disqualification. There are plenty of young people that don’t deserve to be in office, just as there are plenty of older people currently in office that don’t deserve to be there either. But there are certainly a number of young people that deserve to serve their country in that way. Without knowing much, if anything, about Armando, you have reflexively brushed him away based on his age. Don’t we accuse the Left of judging people solely on their demographics while conservatives look to an individual’s merits and accomplishments?

One more point/question (I lied about “lastly”). What’s wrong with having a couple young people in Congress who can advocate for limiting government from the perspective of an age group that is about to be caught in a tsunami of government spending and debt? Doesn’t that help our side argue that position more credibly?

No

If he can run his own business, he can replace Alan Grayson.

A dead cat could replace Alan Grayson and do a better job

zbigreddogz (Diary) Tuesday, October 20th at 8:58PM EST (link)

That doesn’t mean this guy is the candidate I prefer to replace him.

Again, I’m not saying he’s a bad guy or that I wouldn’t vote for him, I’d vote for a retarded 5 year old over Alan Grayson if I had to. But I still would rather a candidate who’s a few years older and a few years more experienced.

Again, I think we should try to talk Daniel Webster into running. He’s said no but I think enough mail could change his mind.

Are we supposed to beg Daniel Webster?

morstar150 (Diary) Thursday, October 22nd at 6:31PM EST (link)

Webster has said no. I can respect that decision if it is based on a family disussion or even if he is just not interested. However, if there is some ulterior motive such as waiting for the NRCC to promise him gobs of money than he can kiss my astroturf. This guy Greyson is an evil hate monger to use his own words. If you love your country as apparently Gonzalez does than you should be respected for the sacrifice of serving your country. Unfortunately, too many congressmen believe they are royalty instead of a servant of the people.

I won’t beg anyone to serve this great nation. Either you have the calling or you do not.

It’s really a disgrace to our country that a man who was impeached from his office as a federal judge is representing Florida in Congress.
