Ask Fred Thompson A Question

I’m going to be sitting in Fred Thompson’s chair on his radio show helping Jeri Thompson out. You can catch the show at www.fredthompsonshow.com.

Back during the 2008 campaign, we would regularly do an “Ask Fred Thompson” thread here at RedState. You’d pose questions in the comments and Fred would respond.

Well, we’re going to take it to the radio today.

Leave a question here in the comments and in the second hour of the show today, Fred is going to call in and respond to questions posed via this thread and Twitter.

Election 2010

Daniel Horowitz (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 9:07AM EST (link)

Maybe you could go around the Senate map for the 2010 elections and get his take on some of the races. In particular relevence to Fred whether he will be endorsing more conservative candidates in primaries like he has done with Hoffman in NY-CD-23 special election.

Who qualifies as a "natural-born citizen"?

potter (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 9:31AM EST (link)

The search for Pres. Obama’s birth certificate is a red herring to deflect from the true issue regarding Obama’s eligibility for the Office of President. By keeping his records secret, he is deliberately leading the public eye away from the real problem.

To the best of my knowledge, the Constitution only uses the term “natural born citizen” one time, and that’s in the paragraph which describes who’s qualified to be President. Everywhere else in the Constitution, they use the word “citizen”.

Is it safe to assume that our Founding Fathers made that word choice because they intended for the term to have a specific effect?

Since our Founders did not define the term within the Constitution, is it reasonable to assume their word choice was possibly influenced by Vattel’s “The Law of Nations”(1758), which they used as a guide?

In § 212. Citizens and natives, Vattel defines the term. Note that Vattel clearly states that BOTH parents must be American citizens.

“The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by
certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in
its advantages. THE NATIVES, OR NATURAL-BORN CITIZENS, ARE THOSE BORN IN THE
COUNTRY, OF PARENTS WHO ARE CITIZENS. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights. The society is supposed to desire this, in consequence of what it owes to its own preservation; and it is presumed, as matter of course, that each citizen, on entering into society, reserves to his children the right of becoming members of it. The country of the fathers is therefore that of the children; and these become true citizens merely by their tacit consent. We shall soon see whether, on their coming to the years of discretion, they may renounce their right, and what they owe to the society in which they were born. I say, that, in order to be of the country, it is necessary that a person be born of a father who is a citizen; for, if he is born there of a foreigner, it will be only the place of his birth, and not his country.”

Obama’s father was a Kenyan under British jurisidiction at the time of Obama Jr.’s birth. That means Obama has dual citizenship, and on those grounds alone, he is not eligible to be President. Many people assume the 14th amendment changes this. If you read Vattel, you will realize that it does not.

Mr. Thompson, would you consider filing a quo warranto proceeding in a D.C. district court so that we can get a ruling on the meaning of the term “natural-born citizen”?

There are a number of people in this country who have questions and concerns related to the eligibility issue. For myself, it is a non-starter, because nothing is going to change the outcome of this past election.

I come in contact with many of our older citizens and they fervently believe that the citizenship issue is a valid one. They are not going to change their minds. I can accept that. The truth of the whole matter is that is goes to credibility issues. So much has been covered up and not disclosed, if it isn’t this question, it is another unanswered question.

The more people who care and do some digging, well maybe eventually something will show up that makes a difference. If not now, later.

and I’m sick of their desperate attempts to get rid of Obama. We need to get rid of Obama because of the destruction he is doing to the country, not because of where he may/maynot have been born. That dog don’t hunt, so to speak.

Based solely on Obama's policies and associations (i.e. ACORN), at what point would he meet the Constitutional requirements for impeachment?

and because the Liberals control that body, the question would never be even remotely considered. Conyers is the Chair., and, some of the members are Nadler (who won’t even consider defunding ACORN), Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, and others just as bad. With the Liberals controlling the House, it is a non-issue. If we could gain the majority in the House in 2010, and appoint those that believe the Constitution is valid, and must be followed, there would be a chance of starting the process. It would then go to the Senate, and unless we gain a majority there also, it will die a quick death. Until the Republicans can control both houses, Obama remains in office. I don’t see that happening in his first term, because we can’t take a majority in the Senate until at least 2012, and, it still depends on Republicans winning every senate race in 2010 which is unlikely. We’re stuck!

billyd (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 12:01PM EST (link)

Just keep talking to people. Help them to see what he’s doing. What his party is doing. And start preping for 2010. If. Sorry. When we get more power in 2010, we’ll severely limit his ability to push his agenda. Right now we can’t even fillibuster anything. If the Dems want something, they can do it all on their own. All we can do is spread the info on what they want to do. And then it’s prep time for 2012 and getting him out.

People need to realize that it’s not going to happen by impeachment. (Like Scope said… We don’t have the votes to do it.) It’s not going to happen by some insane idea about a birth certificate. (He was born in Hawaii, there’s more than enough to prove it) It’s only going to happen by the same way he got in. Votes.

Hey, I have a Question for Fred.

jdaman (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 9:31AM EST (link)

What does he think we should do about the GOP folding over the healthcare issue?

“Status quo,” as you know, is Latin for “the mess we’re in”.

Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment.

What does Fred think about

izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 9:50AM EST (link)

in regards to Islamic fascism?

Does Fred think that Obama’s appeasement strategy is the way to go?

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Place of birth irrelevant

potter (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 10:03AM EST (link)

Before you ban me, please realize that I am not suggesting Obama was born on foreign soil. Where he was born is irrelevant to the legal question, “What is the definition of a natural-born citizen”? Many of us assume we know the answer. But do we? Do you?

The issue has not been settled in any court. It’s time it was so that this question can fade into the history books.

By the way, do you realize Bobby Jindal cannot qualify for President either, as much as I admire the man?

Okay, with the remark about Bobby Jindal,

you have come closer to sealing your fate at RedState.

Congrats, I think you may be the first person I’ve banned this whole year.

And here it is September, Erick? You're going to have

janis (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 10:34AM EST (link)

to work harder if you’re going to meet your quota by Dec. 31st. We’ll do all we can to help, trust us. :-)

Well I'll have to take back my charitable thinking.

These folks are so annoying when they go off the deep end, or start there. I do have to stand by my observation about our older citizens though. I just listen politely and try to guide them into understanding that nothing can be done regardless and that we want to work to make change for the future.

I have a question for him Erik

Michael Dugas (Diary) Thursday, October 8th at 10:17AM EST (link)

Please ask him why there is no loud verbal push, in mass, from our Republican Representatives for tort reform and the end of federal mandates in the health care industry.
We can see measurable success from just tort reform alone in Texas and Mississippi where insurance costs have dropped by 20 – 30+%. And while doctors are fleeing like Democrats from Town Hall meetings in most other states, they are lining up to practice in those two states.
Socialized medicine is failing in EVERY country that has it. Rationed care, extreme drops in R & D in medicine and the need to import doctors from other countries has become the norm because there is no longer any incentive to go through the arduous and expensive training to be a doctor in such a system.
So why is it there seems to be barely a peep about making the above mentioned changes that we can actually see are working while at the same time we see socialized medicine failing every where else?

Why did you run a half-hearted campaign which resulted in the nomination of John McCain?

Suppose 2010 is another 1994–and I think it is possible, then what? Will Republican majorities in the House, and increased numbers in the Senate, do anything affirmative to avert our national fiscal crisis? Sure we’ll stop Obama’s agenda, but then what?

What do you think of this proposal? Petition our state legislatures to call a constitutional convention to consider amendments necessary to reign in congressional spending, and begin the hard process of reducing our national debt. Such a call (for a balanced budget amendment) began in 1978 and nearly succeeded in getting the 2/3 of the legislatures to act, and arguably did succeed, in part, by inducing Congress to pass the Gramm-Rudman Act.
