The Los Angeles Times brings us a delightful tidbit about the leader of the free world.
Obama released a statement regarding Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. In the statement, Obama says, “Americans owe an enormous measure of gratitude to the Mahatma. His teachings and ideals, shared with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his 1959 pilgrimage to India, transformed American society through our civil rights movement.”
There’s just one problem.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948.
Surely Obama’s statement was just poorly worded. But you would think the man who wants to set an example by banning texting while driving government vehicles would also want to set an example on proper grammar and writing.

America Today Has Its Roots in Gandhi's India?
javacatsez Friday, October 2nd at 2:20AM EST (link)“The America of today has its roots in the India of Mahatma Gandhi and the nonviolent social action movement for Indian independence which he led.” — Barack Obama
There is a big difference between “roots,” or the fundamental substance or ground of something, and “influence.” MLK’s values were deeply rooted in Christianity and the Sermon on the Mount. Later he came to realize that Gandhi’s tactics of non-violent protest would enable him to put his Christian values into action on behalf of the civil rights movement.
The roots of America today are still the republican-democratic principles of the Founding Fathers and their Judeo-Christian values.
Unfortunately, there are many in power today who would like to rip those roots out of our American soil and replace them with something newer and more “politically correct.”. A dangerous idea.
Don't worry about getting these things right

Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 9:36AM EST (link)That cause even reasonable minded blacks like myself to question what I am supporting when I am supporting conservatism. Is not conservative for me to have the right vote. Is it not conservative for me to have the right to own my glock-17. Is it not conservative for me to expect the same treatment if I make 100,000 dollars a year and can put 20% on a house to get a decent mortgage, that a white person would get no questions asked. That was some of the things the civil rights movement did allow.

Jim Tomasik (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 10:33AM EST (link)History causes you to question conservatism?
gahazzah (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 1:02PM EST (link)I’m a huge believer in egalitarianism and all but knowing history shouldn’t preclude people of any color from supporting an ideology.
From what I can tell, Rosa Parks, for example, was a member of the Communist Party of America and her act of disobedience was planned which changes the context of what she did, although not the results.
I applaud the result, but question the motives.
/government
All this time I thought Rosa Parks
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 1:21PM EST (link)was invited to sit in the back of the bus because she was black. Turns out it was because she was a communist.
Funny how things get all turned around and twisted up crazy like that.
Why are folks so opposed to history?
gahazzah (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 2:08PM EST (link)Parks was forced to the back of the bus based upon segregationist laws which have no place in an egalitarian society. She was discriminated against because of her skin color as were countless others throughout the country.
This is not in dispute.
However, for generations we as Americans have been fed a lie and have been teaching propaganda to our children. Parks was not just some tired old woman who refused to give up her seat, she was a participant in a staged event to make a point.
Again, the point was valid. The motives are what I question.
I sort of take the stance on the issue that Goldwater took on Brown v. Board of Education. It was a socially just and morally correct decision but it had no basis in the US Constitution and was legally spurious.
Sometimes you need to question the motives behind something to get to the end game and with as many communists in and around the White House these days it might be a good idea to look into the history and true nature of communism in this country.
Now, I’m not saying that the civil rights movement was a communist front by any means. My own family was fighting for abolition and egalitarianism going back to the 1830s. What I am saying is that there is cause to believe that a noble movement was corrupted for the sake of ulterior motives.

What part of equal protection under the law
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 3:04PM EST (link)WOuld have been legally spurious. From my understanding it told states that received fed funds for education in the first place that they couldn’t just state that this was a white school, and this was a black school, and have the white school have everything and the black school have nothing. My father in law suffered under a situation like that.
What I want to hear from conservatives, is that when all is said and done my black ass is going to be left alone to live my life without the interference of government, and when someone’s blatant racism interferes with my rights to live my life without interference, I want that punished as severely as if I took a shovel to someone’s head.
For me, the nannism offered by liberals is not the answer, but neither is belief that I have feedom but no one to defend it.

It was a reinterpretation of the 14th Amendment...
gahazzah (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 3:34PM EST (link)… causing it to supersede the 10th Amendment which is in violation of the 9th Amendment.
The Federal Government has no place in education as per the 10th Amendment. The 14th had nothing to do with education as can be seen from the historical record, it was reinterpreted to apply to education and take the control of the schools away from the States. That is what was legally spurious although morally just.
For the record, I’m not a conservative so please do not use my thoughts against them. I do not claim to speak for anybody but myself.
I want to be left alone as well. Where we might disagree is on the charge that racism alone needs to be treated as though it were a crime unto itself.
/government
Sorry, as I see it, racism is a crime unto itself,
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 6:21PM EST (link)Let me explain. If someone is white and doesn’t like black people, or if someone is black and doesn’t like white people that is fine. Everyone has a right to be a moron, and I can’t stop that that is prejudice not racism.
Racism is using that prejudice to keep another person down. And that happens both ways. When a white kid is the only white kid in the school, and on that basis gets a beatdown in the playground that is racist. When a black who may want to start a business goes into a bank, (and this was happening in the past, I am not sure how much so today), and is qualified, but still didn’t get the loan because the white loan officer decided, that there is no way this black person could pay the loan back, (again, I am controlling the other variables by stating is qualified). Then that racism is crime against the constitution because the person or people in power, are infringing on the other person’s right to live their lives without interference due to their prejudice.
When one person or group of people interefere with another person’s or people’s right to life without interference then that is a crime against the constitution and should be treated as such.
“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen
I see your point, but disagree
gahazzah (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 9:07PM EST (link)My turn to explain –
First I agree on the qualifier between racism and prejudice and even the argument of the kid being beaten to a point. The beating up part is a crime, the because he’s white part is a motive but not a crime unto itself.
Here’s where I disagree –
If a black guy goes into a bank and is denied a loan on the sole basis that he is black it is racist but I do not see it as a crime. The reason is because the man is not being held down, rather he is not being given money he had no right to in the first place.
The argument that he is being denied something or being held down is true but the criteria for which a person or company lends money, offers products or provides services should be up to the lender, producer or provider.
It doesn’t make the racism any less despicable but it doesn’t make it a crime. Rather, the crime is forcing somebody to lend money, sell products or provide services to people they choose to not freely assemble with and that leads to quotas, affirmative action, hate crime legislation and so forth.
The 14th Amendment specifies that no law shall be written which quantifies that the government cannot “hold people down”. The 1s Amendment specifies Free Assembly which could be shown to mean that I can choose with whom I associate, lend money or sell products though I’m not sure if the SCOTUS has ever addressed that particular argument.
A recent lawsuit I saw was regarding a photographer being sued because he chose to not shoot a gay marriage ceremony and was sued for discrimination. This is the logical conclusion to the racism (read: discrimination) is a crime unto itself argument. If I have a service to provide it should be my right to choose my clients, not the public’s right to choose them for me. After all, to whom does the business belong?
/government
I agree with your points,
Leopard1996 (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 4:58AM EST (link)And I too am an opponent of hate crime legislations, Affrimative action, and quotas. These are all the lazy way to pacify a call to true civil rights. I come from a mixed race background and have family members that are minority as well as white, and I find it reprehensible that the laws our there now tell me that the life and liberty of my Hispanic niece is work more than my white nephews so I thing on that point we would agree.
I think the disagreement may come in the fact that when some business puts itself out there as a public accommodation for capitalism to truly work, that accommodation needs to treat all equally.
As in my loaning example, yes I could go to the next bank if bank A has a racist prick at a loan officer, I can go to bank B, and probably get the loan. But if bank A and bank B and bank C are in a collusion, that is where we have a problem, and that can be better enforced with more active role instead of quotas or the garbage that came out of CRA.
“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen
Wow, a friendly race argument :)
gahazzah (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 5:41AM EST (link)My family is mixed as well and dysfunctional beyond repair. The idea that my black cousin has a better chance to go to college than my white cousin is infuriating because to my mind it should be about the person, not their skin color.
I don’t think we really disagree, we just come from different points of view.
One of the biggest problems in government is the need to “do something” and thus try to fix a problem without applying a ready solution. If the banks are in collusion to deny you a loan and competition doesn’t exist (which would be unlikely in a truly free market) there is already a system in place (antitrust laws) to deal with the problem.
Sadly these days the race card is played so often that the true struggles for egalitarianism are lost in the shuffle of pacifism and corruption.

The issue with saying
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 4:15PM EST (link)” Weird, I thought the Civil Rights movement had it’s roots in the Communist Party” appears to be a back handed slap against the movement.
Maybe I’m wrong here but I think it is nothing but regurgitated Bircher BS. From what I can tell, they were the ones peddling this crap claiming the federal government was trampling states rights and calling MLK a mouthpiece for the communist party.
Neither the republicans nor the democrats had good track records with helping in this cause. If some blacks found some help from the communist party, more power to them! They sure the heck were not getting much help anywhere else. The white social conservatives should have been screaming bloody murder from the roof tops but they were either scared silent, flat out did not care, or were the ones blowing up the black churches.
I can believe Parks bus protest was a staged event and I have no problem with that.
So was the Selma March.
It's not so much back-handed
gahazzah (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 6:22AM EST (link)From what I can tell many of the early groups, such as the NAACP and ACLU were heavily influenced by communists thought I admit that what I’ve read might be wrong to be sure.
I don’t think MLK was a mouthpiece for the communist party, though I do think he was a Marxist. Once doesn’t need to be taking orders to be working on the same side of an issue.
Next point. If the communist party was willing to help in a way that nobody else was we can applaud the results but we must also ask questions regarding the motives. What was the end game?
As for not having a problem with the staged events, I have a problem with actively lying to ourselves and our children about our history. If the POTUS is okay with having a communist in the WH, why should we be so sensitive about our history?
