we are happy that a huge deficit will not be created in Illinois (or in DC for that matter) to build the venues from which we will all have to watch the steroid pumped hermaphrodites run their races.

You may notice in the photo on my previous comment some housing on left side up in the hills. This makes for a convenient break between the olympic village area that probably will be set up on the beach and the criminals living in the favelos in the hills. I agree with you that Rio is not safer than Chicago and Detroit. It just looks a lot different, and has a more beautiful picturesque harbor.

But life is about more than crime. And safety demands more than just observing crime statistics. I imagine that Munich in 1972 was considered a pretty safe city to be in for the Olympics. As for Detroit and Chicago v. Rio, I bet they are both safer than the Brazilian city, and I bet Detroit's crime statistics are better than Chicago's.

Pilgrim's picture shows another reason Rio will have problems with the games, though--it is mostly hemmed in by the ocean and the mountains. Not high mountains, but inconvenient ones when it comes to building more stadia.

I understand they fell through on their promises to build more hotels for the Pan American Games, too. Don't know when that was.

But here are the real considerations. First, Rio wasn't chosen instead of Chicago. Chicago was eliminated for whatever reasons, and Rio was later picked to host the games.

Second, most of what would be built to accommodate the games in Chicago would be a waste of money. The buildings, etc., would not be cost effective relative to future needs. How can I say that? Because if they were, they'd be built without the Olympics. In other words, we would be diverting money from whatever else it would be used for to build Olympic structures that would serve no preferred future purpose.

Third, we don't have any money to waste on bread and circuses. Every dollar we would spend on the Olympics would be borrowed from the future earnings of our children and grandchildren and their grandchildren. In effect, we'd be taking money that should be used for their benefit (it's their money, after all), and spending it on a movie and popcorn. Not my idea of responsible government, or responsible parenting.

2069 murders to Chicago's 510. Now please tell me how Rio is safer, especially considering 1 out of those 5 murders is committed by the extremely corrupt police department.

In addition, Poland is part of Europe (can anyone in the Obammie admin read a map?) The mostly European members of the IOC are acutely aware (having suffered in similar fashion themselves for many years) of the death and destruction brought about by socialist dictators and Chicago style bully boys like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Krucschev. They are in complete sympathy with the Poles and their continuing struggle against Soviet aggression.

So, Prez Obeyme, your recent snub of Poland on the 70th Anniversary of the Russian invasion has now come back to haunt you. Let's see, how did your former "pastor" put it, "The chickens have come home to roost."

Since the IOC is comprised mostly of Europeans and since Obama's been dissing our European allies (I hope their still allies to us, the American people, if not Obama) while cozying up to dictators as well as telling the world how rotten we are why wouldn't they vote Chicago into last place?

I'm not cheering so much for the USA losing an Olmpic bid, I'm cheering for President Arrogance getting his hat handed to him for once.

Karma sucks, don't it Mr. Pesident?

"WE" didn't lose the bid for the Olympics - Chicago did. Don't you remember, your Prez has been going around the world apologizing for what a sorry country we are - why would anybody want to hold the Olympics here?

In any event, no doubt most of the money generated would have gone to Chi Town mobsters, er, politicians, for furthering the careers of NAMBLA sycophants like Kevin Jennings or neo-communists like Van Jones. No thanks.

And this,
"The [sic] would bring in well needed jobs, ya know. Since this country is in a recession and all."

You know genius, if you and Prez Obeyme were really interested in jobs, you would end the capital gains tax, end the death tax, cut marginal tax rates, cut 50% of the non-sensical red tape on small businesses, repeal Davis-Bacon, cut special treatment for unions out of ALL govt contracts, restore the pre-JFK ban on public employee unions (especially the NEA and AFT), return to the dream of Martin Luther King by eliminating minority based set-asides and quotas, reform all labor tort laws of the last fifty years, etc, etc, etc, or any ONE of the above.

But you aren't really interested in jobs, are you? Just self-aggrandizment and self-righteous proclamations about "justice". What a bunch of creeps...

Standard trade show budget for any company is a few hundred dollar stack of fresh $20 dollar bills. That is the only way you get anything done by the union guys there. They ride around in golf carts 2 to a cart. They've lost some major trade shows to Orlando and Vegas because of the complaints.
Rio certainly does not look like Chicago or Detroit. They have slums in the outskirt hills called favelos. They will have a problem to solve with the criminals up in those hills, but I believe they can manage this problem.

Rio certainly does not look like Chicago or Detroit. They have slums in the outskirt hills called favelos. They will have a problem to solve with the criminals up in those hills, but I believe they can manage this problem.

Kidnapping, murder-its all there. And in fact, I'll even link you. Rio is known for its high crime rate, especially crimes against...wait for it...tourists! Say what you want about Chicago, but as someone who lived in Chicago, it is a very safe city. There is horrific crimes that happen in almost every major city. Chicago is not a only a beautiful and clean city, tourists are more than free to walk down our beautful streets with no fears of crime. Rio is South America's New Orleans, criminals, looters and kidnappers.
