Dear Republicans

Your Republican response was like a Saturday Night Live skit without the funny.

You failed.

Luckily for you, the President failed too. We’re at status quo.

Actually it was not too bad , IMHO

My wife, who is a moderate/conservative, liked the response very much. Thought he was honest and straightforward. Just a average persons response to the demogogue-in-chief.

Wow!! he spoke without a teleprompter

nivlem (Diary) Thursday, September 10th at 1:22AM EST (link)

This is who we are…
Why do we deny it??
I am sorry, Eric, in “all due respect”, we are “real”. We don’t depend on ‘speech writers’ and “teleprompters’.
Let us be who we are and stop idolizing the false presentations of the left.
Our hesitations and deliberations of speech mean things. It is not pretend.
Let us support and herald it…not condemn it…
It is our strength.
Did you ever see President Bush’s teleprompter falll and he lost his place??
Who are we kidding?
Call a spade a spade…
This President is an emporor without clothes.
Please do not cut our own along the way of embellishing his attributes. We will NEVER, EVER be an OBama-type speaker. We don’t want to be. We
lose our soul if we do so..

I liked it

His tone was much better than Jindals. It was short, sweet, and to the point, just what the opposing response should be.

The lighting, set, and audio was an SNL skit. Add the lack of inflection and he looked like Darryl Hammond doing the show opening.

Given the time he had I thought it was a good response....

antisocial (Diary) Wednesday, September 9th at 9:47PM EST (link)

from a PR perspective I think he came off as honest and well meaning response.

Did they give him a time limit?

I’m looking at you, Bobby Jindal.

Maybe it’s time for the leadership to let Mike Pence stop up to the plate. I know they hate his fiscal conservatism, but can’t they look past that?

Let’s send the Marines to evacuate refugees from Libya and shut down the drug gangs in Mexico–and make the Marine hymn relevant again.

He did all right

gator_hoo (Diary) Wednesday, September 9th at 10:42PM EST (link)

The atmosphere thing is ALWAYS a problem. Also, the speech is always written before the address. I thought they did a better job than usual of actually addressing the points.

It wasn’t great, maybe a C-, but not a failure.

antisocial (Diary) Wednesday, September 9th at 11:10PM EST (link)

To many people (independents and moderate conservatives) we needed to get them to see GOP give out a common sense , non rhetorical and non-campaign message. I think that objective was met. Again it was not brilliant but I thought it was sufficient.

Remember POTUS is good at campaign mode and aggressive bickering…. still his numbers are dropping… I think one reason is people don’t trust a pure politician in rhetoric mode.

I would rate him a B…. doesn’t make a difference but I thought he did better than what most politicians in gop could have done.

PS: My wife hates politics… for a change she said…. “who is this guy? he makes sense”…

I keep pimping this guy, but there is just about nobody as effective as Paul Ryan when he speaks.

I can't comment on the content,

Flagstaff (Diary) Wednesday, September 9th at 10:18PM EST (link)

because I missed the beginning of the response. But it brings up the question of why we seem to put up poor public speakers like this guy and Tom Price to follow the most accomplished public speaker since Bill Clinton.

Content and substance are very important, but the medium is the message. That was one thing that Sarah Palin brought to the podium–the ability to deliver a speech with conviction, even with that irritating speech pattern.

Those speaking opportunities should always be filled with dynamic speakers. The eggheads can give them the words.

If this is not Constitutional, it illegal and we should have some type of recourse.

We get enough vague crap from Obama and co. REP response could have taken the top 3 problems with the bill and highlight them more specifically to get people to question and actually read the details rather than believe Obama’s vague crap. Read and expose the specifics in the bill language that directly refute Obama. Especially the language that deals w/ illegals.

This cult of personality by the arrOgant in Chief is disgusting and sickening, I have facebook friends posting that Obama’s speech brought them to tears. They are so drunk on the kool aid it really is not funny. It’s dangerous for this country.

As much as Boustany's delivery was a small improvement on Jindahl's,

Flagstaff (Diary) Thursday, September 10th at 1:12AM EST (link)

the setting was an improvement too, but still not good.

Can’t we use a venue that doesn’t end up sounding like a speech delivered to an empty hall? The echo was distracting.

What does The One do well? He addresses the camera and crowd as if he’s talking to friends and acquaintances. It’s a skill that can be learned, and should be, by any politician with national aspirations.

How much airtime did the networks give for our rebuttal? Serious, it seemed like they gave us 5 minutes and if that was case who the heck decided 5 minutes?

The speech for us lacked specifics as did Obama’s. We need to hit home on specifics.

I get they wanted a Doctor for us to give the speech they should of gone with Coburn in that case

Dare I say it...

azaeroprof (Diary) Thursday, September 10th at 12:44AM EST (link)

yes, can you imagine if they had chosen Sarah Palin to give the response. It would have been a slick presentation (because she’s good at that), the ratings would have been through the roof, she could have immediately remade her “death panels” case without Obambi having a chance to rebut, and her response would be all the pundits would be talking about afterwards. Or at least they would be focusing on Obama vs Palin, which would have taken much of the focus off the Obama speech itself.

Geez, are there any professionals at all in the GOP anymore? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out!

5. Better yet, why not a doctor who is *not* a Congressman?

Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, September 10th at 12:52AM EST (link)

Then we would have had a contrast between a politician and an ordinary citizen – and as we all know, people trust doctors way more than politicians.

Boustany is a cardiothoracic surgeon, so his MD is a big part of the reason he was picked to give the response. I wish they’d picked Coburn … or paired Boustany up with Paul Ryan.

I thought ordinary, knowledgeable citizens without a script

aesthete (Diary) Thursday, September 10th at 1:15AM EST (link)

would have been great also, but something of a radical and unpredictable play. I like your idea about having a doctor give the speech better, though.

These 2 paragraphs are the “bombs”:

Finally, President Obama delivered an offhand applause line tonight about the cost of the War on Terror. As we approach the anniversary of the September 11th attacks and honor those who died that day and those who have died since in the War on Terror, in order to secure our freedoms, we need to remember their sacrifices and not demonize them as having had too high a price tag.

Remember, Mr. President, elected officials work for the people. Forcing a conclusion in order to claim a “victory” is not healthy for our country. We hear you say government isn’t always the answer; now hear us — that’s what we’ve been saying all along.

She’s hitting the right tones on these ones.

Better than Obama’s lies, but if this continues don’t count on too many midterm gains.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson
