Hoffman over Scozzafava: The Exception That Proves the Rule

I am on record repeatedly saying that disaffected conservatives should not agitate for a third party. It truly makes no sense. Ballot access laws in the fifty states make it extremely impractical to mount a third party challenge except in very rare cases. Historically, those cases are premised on individuals who, once off the national stage, see their third party collapse, see e.g. Teddy Roosevelt and Ross Perot.

There are, however, some situations where exceptions must be made in order to pressure the Republican Party of a particular state into doing what is right. The opportunities rarely arise because there are not a lot of viable third parties out there. One state where there is an exception to my “no third parties” rule is New York.

In that state, the local Republican Party did everything possible to screw the national Republican Party because the local party was more interested in taking back the New York Senate than helping the nation as a whole. As a result, it played politics badly and has nominated Dede Scozzafava to replace Congressman McHugh in a special election.

The GOP speculated that the Democrats would nominate the Chairman of the New York Senate Agriculture Committee and they could take back the State Senate in a special election. They played their cards poorly. Now the race in NY-23 pits two liberals against each other in the two major parties. Sadly, the person furthest to the left is the Republican, Dede Scozzafava.

Dede Scozzafava is to the left of the party on abortion, taxes, spending, marriage, guns, everything. She is a terrible candidate. The New York GOP had a chance to do right by the people of NY-23. They failed.

Conservatives and Republicans should rally around Dough Hoffman as a viable alternative to Dede Scozzafava. Hoffman has more in common with the people in NY-23 and is closer to the Republican Party on issues across the board.

We don’t need a third party in this country. And it is too hard to set one up anyway. But there is a viable third party in New York that conservatives can use to remind the GOP what happens when the local Republican Party rejects the Republican platform. Above all else, we must make sure Scozzafava is defeated.

Having a Democrat in that seat would be better than Scozzafava because the media could not resist the story line that the GOP is moving left just when Americans are moving back to the right. Scozzafava would hurt NY-23 and she would hurt the GOP brand nationally.

Doug Hoffman is the guy we should rally around.

My first reaction to this was that 3rd party runs are never a good idea.

But after doing some additional reading, I have to agree with you on this one. I think Hoffman could pull a Leiberman and win as an independent against the party candidates.

Erick I think you missed a key point

I don’t think it’s New York that makes this an acceptable call.

What’s important is that there was no primary in this race. This isn’t a sour grapes move by RedState, playing in the primary and then after losing withholding support like RonPaul did.

The rule I like is Conservative in the Primary, Republican in the General. But with no primary, I think we’re free to back whoever we want. Just like nobody should feel bad who voted McClintock in the California recall of Gray Davis.

As a McClintock Supporter in CA...

gahazzah (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 5:14PM EST (link)

…I don’t feel bad having voted for him, I feel bad having supported the Recall in the first place. The “Conservative in the Primary, Republican in the General” might sound like a good idea, but when said (R) is worse than the (D) who was in power, it’s a lost game.

We literally would have been better off in CA if we had left Davis in power because 1) the State still would be in ruins and 2) the GOP brand might actually mean something to CA voters.

This is a special case though

Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 5:29PM EST (link)

Arnie was only worse than Gray because Gray angered the legislative Ds the day he set foot in Sacramento. “Your job is to implement my vision.” So they fought, and he kept their spending down.

The next D won’t do that.

I beg to differ about Arnie being worse

gahazzah (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 7:00PM EST (link)

Arnie is worse in every way because he acts worse than Davis and he gives the (D)s cover for everything they do to CA.

Any time you support a liberal pretending to be a (R), and by pretending I mean by not even supporting basic GOP principles such as low taxes, they give the (D)s political cover and would-be GOP supporters a reason to stay home as many did in regards to McCain.

Right

If you need money to run he does

gahazzah (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 3:30AM EST (link)

And we in CA are big money for the GOP. Many people who bemoan how “left” and “blue” CA is forget a few things about this State. For starters we pour more money into the federal campaign coffers than many States combined.

In the 2008 Campaign CA accounted for 14% of McCain’s total funds. You cannot win in the “big 5″ without the money from the Golden State.

In 2004, Texas only beat CA for GOP donations by 3% and George W. Bush was hailing from Texas. We might not swing towards the left in electoral seats but the GOP needs the conservatives out here.

Here’s some more math for the non-believers. If the registered Republicans in California were to create their own State, it would be more populous Maryland and the 31 lesser populated States.

Even if your ignore the registration #s and just look at actual, not even likely but actual, people who voted for McCain you still have 4.5 million people as potential contributors. Think about that numbers. At 4.5 million voting Republicans, CA now only loses 5 places in population count falling slightly behind Maryland ,Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Alabama.

So yeah, he does undermine you in the big five.

That's not the big five I mean

I mean the big five budget negotiating group. Governor, Assembly Speaker, Assembly minority leader, Senate Majority leader, Senate Minority leader.

no change in conservative turnout for McCain

humboldt (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 2:42PM EST (link)

according to national exit polls, in 2004, self identified idealogy was:
liberal: 21%
Moderate: 45%
Conservative: 34%

in 2008, it was:
liberal: 22%
Moderate: 44%
Conservative 34%

so there is no evidence whatsoever that conservatives stayed home in 2008.

Even Liberals can call themselves Conservatives when a pollster asks (nt)

Third Party?

morstar150 (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 5:43PM EST (link)

I believe in the State of New York there are already many different parties that are able to run. The Conservative Party and the Liberal Party candidates often decided the election.

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil, in its worst, an intolerable one. (Thomas Paine)

De De Will BE An Obama Friendly House Member

Ashbrook (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 9:25PM EST (link)

In the Assembly, De De S sided more with the liberal Democrats (and they are very liberal in NY) than she did with low tax, pro-family Republicans. She prided herself at being Independent.

If she had been in the House she would be siding with Nancy and Barak more than with Cantor and Pence. In other words she will set back the successful Republican strategy of challenging, not compromising, with the the Left.

Not only can Hoffman win this three way contest, being a Republican he will be in position to unite the Republican and Conservative tickets in 2010.

PS Note that De De’s support of card check caused her to receive an award and a nomination from the union created Working Families Party.

I strongly disagree

proudgop (Diary) Monday, August 24th at 11:25PM EST (link)

As u can tell by my screen name I am proud Republican first.

1. Can u imagine how media will portray this if we lose yet another house seat?

2. I live in NY state if we lose this seat there will be only 2 Republicans in DC representing entire state ( Lee, King) if we don’t do well in 2010 and Dems retain Gov mansion and Senate its likely we will have none

3. She is liberal on a lot issues but so is Guiliani.

I think its grave mistake to do this; I hope RedState reconsiders

as an NY-23 voter, I have to say, you're very wrong.

randy streu (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 4:10PM EST (link)

NY-23 is a traditionally Consesrvative district. That’s number 1. Number 2 is, Doug is a REPUBLICAN. More so — much more so — than Scozzafava is. I’m sorry, but if the GOP walks away from its principles, then what the hell good is it to be “Republican First?” Voting Hoffman is a good way to GET a REPUBLICAN into the legislature who will actually vote WITH US when push comes to shove. Can the same be said for DeDe?

Like what was said above, if there had actually been a primary, that would be one thing. But that wasn’t the case. It was just 11 elitist tools who decided they got to tell us all who to vote for. Screw ‘em. They think they can win without the Conservative vote, or else bully Conservatives into voting with them. Wrong.

The CPNY AND RedState have it exactly right.

I DO, however, have a HUGE problem with the following statement from Hoffman
