Co-Ops are the Public Option By Another Name

You are going to hear a lot of talk in the coming weeks about co-ops. The Obama administration is signaling that the “public option” may not be needed in the healthcare plan.

They are retreating to “co-ops”. Friends, a cooperative healthcare device is the public option just with a better poll tested name.

Francis noted this morning that “co-ops … will be functionally indistinguishable from a public option because they will similarly benefit from free capital, grabbed from the taxpayers.” In other words, the referee will begin playing the game and, like with the public option, co-ops will kill off private insurance.

The White House says this is to introduce competition into the market. Here’s a big rule in life, though: government cannot compete with private business when government is also writing the rules.

As Francis noted:

These people aren’t proposing to introduce competition at all. They’re proposing to introduce supply. (If Obama, Pelosi and Waxman actually reasoned that too much supply makes prices fall, they can each have a gold star.)

But the market isn’t adding new supply today, because none is needed. Indeed, if it were legal to produce new lower-cost products without some of the features mandated by current laws, the market would produce that supply overnight.

Do not believe that the public option is going away. Do not believe that the Democrats are going to give up on universal healthcare. They are not. They are going to change the language and keep the same goal and plan. It may take them longer, but they will continue pushing forward.

Now we are at the hour of danger. Republicans, wanting to appear reasonable, might cut a deal and go with co-ops. If they do, they are voting for a government take over of healthcare.

Keep the pressure up.

co ops was a republican idea. I’m sure I heard it from a republican first. Otherwise why would BO prepare the horde for compromise. Please don’t ban me, I’m just saying.

The GOP alternative

Erick Erickson (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 10:42AM EST (link)

The GOP and the freakin’ Heritage Foundation did suggest co-ops.

The problem is that the Democrats took the name, but not the actual structure of the proposal.

So the Dems can say they have co-ops just as the GOP and Heritage suggested and the GOP and Heritage will be left explaining that they are not the same thing.

Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?

"Public Option" was poll-tested euphemism

Freedoms Truth (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 4:07PM EST (link)

Since “Government-run health insurance” would poll a lot worse.

So they used up “public option”.

Now they will use “Coops”. So what does that mean? Devils in the details.

You think Obama has to "prepare the horde for compromise"

janis (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 10:47AM EST (link)

only if he is leaning toward a Republican idea? He’s leaned toward a lot of R ideas. See “FISA”, or “Continuing rendition program”, or any number of other security programs that the Bush Administration set up and Obama retained. He didn’t set up his nutroot base for any of it, he just renegged on his airy-fairy campaign promises.

He’ll do it every single time he feels like it and you guys can’t stop him, can you? Gee. Pity, that.

It IS a Ploy.

And the out-of-touch Republicans ARE going to compromise, and they WILL get suckered into giving Obama everything he wants.

Just prepare yourselves for that.

Amen!

Ausonius (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 11:59AM EST (link)

The squishy Republicans who have D.C.-itis and want to play nicely with the Dems will need to be monitored.

As I wrote this morning in my diary on this topic ( “No Prisoners!”), you cannot compromise with the Dems: compromise with them means they win.

Gibbs and Burton: the public option is still doubleplusgood.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 6:33PM EST (link)

I was watching this video clip on Breitbart.tv today where Robert Gibbs tried in vain to square what Teleprompter Boy and Sebelius had said about the “public option” (government health insurance plan designed to drive private insurers out of business) not being essential for passage of Obamacare with their pronouncements that the “public option” now, again, IS essential.

And then I saw this similar mental gymnastics performance by the the beady-eyed Bill Burton:

(Both of these guys have always given me the creeps — I would not trust them with anything of mine.)

Obama’s, Sebelius’s, Gibbs’s and Burtons’s repeated lies and determination to foist socialized medicine on the American people caused this realization once again. Our battle with these people simply boils down to this: The Debtocrats simply believe they have the right to use the mechanisms of government to steal money from “the rich” and give it to “the poor.” And the rest of us believe the “silly, outdated” notion that stealing is stealing, whether government does it or whether an individual does it without the government intermediary. And they also believe their noble goal entitles them to do whatever it takes to reach it. As Michael Medved, I think, has explained, if Obamacare was really so great, wouldn’t Obama be sending all of his Debtocrat congresscritters to town hall after town hall after town hall to explain it all to the “little people?” Wouldn’t Teleprompter Boy be going to presser after town hall after national television address to explain how this monstrosity of a bill actually would work? Instead of trying, first, to ram through its enactment before the August recess?

And over the years I’ve had this conversation with quite a few liberals. (Some were likeable people. But they are not “deep thinkers.” At least not with respect to morality and ethics and government, as almost all of them are post-modernists. Their solution to every problem is: let’s use government to fix it. Problem solved.)

I see a man. He’s hungry. I want to help him. But I don’t have a lot of money in my pocket. I know you do. I ask you to give him the money I think he needs. You don’t want to. So I pull out a gun and take your money and give it to the hungry man. Is that okay with you?

Ans.: No.

I see a man. He’s hungry. I want to help him. But I don’t have a lot of money in my pocket. I know you do. I go to the city council and am successful in getting a law passed to tax you to take your money, because you have lots of it (at the point of a gun if necessary, because you’ll be arrested and ultimately go to jail if you don’t pay my compassionate tax), and give it to the hungry man. Is that okay with you?

Ans.: Yes.

Believe it or not, they always say in that case, because a law was passed, the stealing was no longer stealing. It’s just the way they “think.”

Thou shalt not steal. Post-modernist liberals don’t believe in such quaint notions. That would prevent them from being compassionate and “liberal.” With other people’s money.

Thank you.

I think Gibbs was hired for his looks, as people tend to give baby-faced individuals the benefit of the doubt.

Absolutely no co-ops...

tennreps (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 11:40AM EST (link)

If you give these people an inch they will always take a mile. Examples abound everywhere in the interpretations of other laws. We must stand firm and reject everything that even hints of government intervention in our healthcare. Republican idea or not, does not matter,. Keep the governments hands off our health care!

co-op

cosmicgnome (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 12:15PM EST (link)

Watch out there is a union move here. Remember the VEBA’s. There is already a structure for them to run health care. Barry said that lower health costs would mean higher wages,a union activity. With employers paying unions directly for the benefit packages and who knows what other subsidies it won’t be too long before we have to join the union to get health insurance, kind of like the old days of communism when to get anything you had to be a party member.
Yes health programs are important, but remember who put Barry in office, unions are the head of this hydra, they and their members and supporters ARE the REAL ENEMY of FREEDOM. Do not let them sleaze us!

CO-OPS VICE PUBLIC OPTION

beanerecmo Monday, August 17th at 12:43PM EST (link)

So co-ops are the flag du jour to see who salutes. Government run co-ops are the same as the public option. They are presented as non-profit, but they are also subsidized by the government – our tax dollars. Co-ops are like Federally Funded Research and Development Companies (FFRDCs); they are mandated by the government for federal agencies to use, and are mandated to be non-profit. They do the same thing as private businesses; but because they are subsidized by the federal government – your tax dollars – private businesses cannot compete for those same niches. Further, because they are mandated to be non-profit, what comes in must go out to equal zero. FFRDCs are the most expensive contract “option” that federal programs encounter, but are further subsidized by our tax dollars. In other words, co-ops are still the public option under a different name.

I was a liberal until I learned to read, got a job and was mugged by willful tax and spend regressives (aka progressives) and naive acolytes.

Removing all profit from health care

JamesLBurns (Diary) Monday, August 17th at 1:43PM EST (link)

Seems pretty clear that the goal is to remove all free market profits from health care. The House Bill already does this by capping profits.

Government Sponsored and Then Bail Out For Health Care Co Ops

ellisclarke (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 8:05AM EST (link)

Now Obama-Care is considering Government financed co-operative non-profit health care insurance programs. This in itself is might be a good move, but it does raise a number of questions that need answers.

Like is the Government going to fund these co-operative non-profits out of our taxes?

If they are funded through taxes, like those companies who asked for and took the tarp money they will be subject to how the money is spend and what health services will be paid for and who will be calling the shots?. Government unelected bureaucrats and political czars or patience’s and their doctors?

When or if these non-profits were to go bankrupt, would we the tax payers have to bail them out, like was done with Banks and Auto sector?

So is it really a move away from a socialized universal health care or just another way for the Government to come in with dismantling the current health care insurance programs through the back door with these Government and tax payer funded non-profit health care insurance programs?.

Keep smiling

government option

eyesopen007 Wednesday, August 19th at 4:14AM EST (link)

We should not using the liberal’s teminology. We shouldn’t call it a “public option”, we should call it what it is, a GOVERNMENT OPTION.
