Valerie Jarrett is Barack Obama’s Senior Advisor to the President and Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Engagement. You’d think as Barack Obama’s Senior Advisor for Public Engagement, she’d show some more class to our soldiers.
But not today.
Flying home to Washington, D.C. today after speaking to the left wing online activists gathering in Pittsburgh, Ms. Jarrett’s flight had an Army Private in uniform on the plane.
Ms. Jarrett, the President’s Senior Advisor for Public Engagement never even acknowledged the Army Private, though she clearly saw him.

To be honest
Wing Zero (Diary) Saturday, August 15th at 3:30PM EST (link)The Private probably didn’t want to be talked to… especially if he knew who the lady was.
But service members usually do appreciate being thanked by the public.
I’m not surprised that anyone associated with this White House can’t “be bothered” to say hello to a Soldier, or Airman or any military member.
1-21-09 – We are so screwed… Wait… maybe not just yet.
Perhaps Jarrett was the Clinton staffer who said she didn't talk to the military...
smagar (Diary) Sunday, August 16th at 9:53AM EST (link)…remember that incident from the early days of the Clinton presidency? IIRC, LTG (at the time) Barry McCaffrey was entering the White House, and passed by a Clinton staffer who reportedly said that she “didn’t talk to the military.”
Hmmmm…just where WAS Valerie Jarrett in early 1993?
Just kidding…I doubt that was her. But the shoe does seem to fit snugly, doesn’t it?

lthurwitz (Diary) Saturday, August 15th at 4:01PM EST (link)I was expecting some kind of snub or disrespect, but didn’t see it in this story. Is there more to this than is written? I believe in showing respect for all in service, but sometimes that includes respectfully letting them live their lives while you live yours. Now if there were only 10 or so people on the plane it would be a different story. What am I missing?
I'm a bit of the same opinion about this
Jeff Weimer (Diary) Saturday, August 15th at 4:08PM EST (link)And I’m active duty Navy. I wouldn’t perceive it as a slight – the vast majority of people of all walks of life don’t say anything to those in uniform at an airport or in a plane.
It’s not like a Congressman thanking the Lord for a hurricane because it might possibly interrupt the political opposition’s convention, or anything.
I just don’t think this is that big of a deal.

I go out of my way to say hello
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, August 15th at 4:20PM EST (link)Jeff
I probably take the opposite track, I go out of my way just to say hello and talk to young men and women in uniform when traveling. It’s often times not a conversation about anything important or for that matter about their job, just hi how you doing, how’s it going, normal stuff that some of the young people going or coming from overseas have been missing out on and is part of adjusting to life back in “the world”.
I’ve met some of this country’s finest men and women who are keeping this country free, and you know what I get more out of talking to them than the probably get talking to me.
We have some amazing people in our armed forces.

My (combined) wish list.
My most recent experience with active duty soldiers was interesting in several ways
ColdWarrior (Diary) Sunday, August 16th at 12:40AM EST (link)Flying on a small regional jet from Atlanta to Chicago on the Sunday after the RedState gathering, about ten soldiers were boarding with me. After the plane was close to shutting the doors, I got up and went up into the first class section, where a colonel was seated, and quietly told a couple of the stewardesses that I wanted to buy each of the soldiers a drink, but they had to make sure I received no acknowledgement for it. I whipped out my credit card. Well, that particular regional carrier didn’t take credit cards in flight (like many now do). Okay, Plan B. I told them I had $55 in cash in my wallet and asked them to start offering free drinks to each soldier until it ran out. I tried handing it to one of them. They said to hold off.
I returned to my seat — I was seated next to a young Army specialist. Started talking to him. He worked for the Armed Forces Network as a photo journalist. Michigan State Spartan. About 22. And very, very liberal. So we had a spirited and friendly conversation about various political issues.
Well, the drink orders were being taken. The stewardess told me I was “off the hook.” Turns out things have changed in “this man’s Army” since my active duty and reserve duty days. The soldiers were on orders not to drink in uniform while traveling, and the specialist told me he would not risk violating that order unless he saw the senior officer or some other officer drinking. So I took a stroll through the cabin for him, and I couldn’t see any officers drinking. Darn.
So I thanked him for his service, of course, otherwise, and told him, near the end of the flight, that I was an academy grad and had served on active and reserve duty, too.
And that, undoubtedly, I’d be cancelling his vote in the next presidential election. <;^)
Thank you.

I’ve seen mothers and fathers with t-shirts or hats saying their offspring are serving and I try to at least speak to them. The smiles I receive in return are heartwarming. At least some of us can let our brave soldiers know they are appreciated.

Then, when the MSM begins to wet its pants and whine, we can point to those examples and ask “Well, isn’t this the kind of change you folks in the newsroom and Columbia School of Journalism wanted? Aren’t we now making a big deal of small things, because of their SYMBOLIC value? Seems to me that a publicly-known White House official—who is a leader in the President’s—excuse me, Commander in Chief’s—Public Engagement effort, no less—-should understand the importance of conveying respect to our military, especially in time of war. Passing by a Soldier—-especially a private, someone who KNEW he was most likely going into a war zone by enlisting in the Army—after thanking a political operative is a powerful symbol.”
Yes, it’s powerful. For us.
