Why Ashleigh Kenny Matters

Meet Ashleigh Kenny. She’s a student at Valdosta State University in South Georgia. She presented Congressman Jack Kingston with a t-shirt that said “R.I.P. The U.S. Constitution” on one side and on the other side had a this quote from Ronald Reagan: “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Oliver Willis, a real activist, i.e. subsidized by a Hungarian billionaire, put up a post on his website saying Congressman Kingston was, in posing with Ashleigh and her t-shirt, “embracing the fringe.”

They he let his commenters have at Ashleigh. A sample:

She’s also pregnant with her cousin’s child (they got married after the first one) and gives those Tee shirts away at the local strip club where she works (to avoid the military service which might pay for her education).

That’s one of the less crude ones.

And this is what unknown people who care about this country and believe Barack Obama is sending us down a terrible road are being subjected to. They are beaten up by SEIU thugs, savaged on blogs, and ridiculed on MSNBC. All they did was show up at a townhall and express their opposition to socialized medicine.

Ashleigh has written a response to the vitriol she’s been subjected to. I put it below the fold. Remember Ashleigh Kenny. She is not alone. Like the rest of us here, she fights for freedom.

I realize that some controversy has resulted from the blog posting a picture of Congressman Kingston and me, where I presented him a t-shirt that said “R.I.P. The U.S. Constitution”

What those who seek to smear me don’t know, or take the time to find out, is that the back of the shirt is adorned with the words of President Ronald Reagan: “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Perhaps one’s perception of the shirt depends on his or her perception of our Constitution. Personally, I believe it is a fundamental document that was written to insure that the government never became greater than the people. When I look at today’s society, the government’s control seems to increasingly outweigh the people’s. I cannot help but feel that the Constitution has been theoretically buried. This design isn’t meant to point fingers, it’s meant to stir an awareness of what we are losing. It’s about the power of the government increasing, while the power of the people decreases.

This shirt is not meant to stir debate regarding which administration did the most to slaughter our Constitution. While we cannot change the past, we do have the present in our hands, right now. This is where change begins.

I must say, in a time where political scandal consists of perjury, adultery, embezzlement…etc., to be caught standing next to a college kid accepting a pro-liberty t-shirt really doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe that’s just me

And Oliver wonders why he's still single

It’d be almost sad, except that he likes to attack women on his blog.

We could make a new motto of that "fringe" thing.

We could start shouting: The Fringe For Freedom! at rallies and protests.

We’re not going to be able to stop them from calling us names and ridiculing us so why not turn it back on them?

The Left

…have absolutely lost their minds. They don’t give a damn about the Constitution. They are full blown socialists who only see the Constitution as an obstacle to be knocked down.

“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” – James Madison

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience.” — John Locke, 1690

There are going to be more

Erick you and I know there are going to be more people who are dragged through a pile of broken glass like this by the Left in the coming months.

There will be more and after today’s warnings from the Oval Office they’ll be more frequent and even more brutal.

We don’t have very strong libel laws like Britain does, but why can’t she sue?

This is just sick, yet not surprising

The Left is insane and it’s only going to get worse.

Our whole family has been viewing these town hall videos and reading the shocking stories tonight. As soon as SEIU and other union thugs are involved in anything, the violence escalates. People are going to start getting killed.

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to speculate that this country is heading for a type of civil war – over liberty and tyranny. And our side cannot be intimidated into silence any longer. We are going for broke. It is our freedom, liberty, and property that are at stake, and the statists want to steal all those from us and render us slaves.

I’m proud of Gladney, Ashleigh, Rep. Kingston, and all who are fighting for our liberty and against tyranny.

Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.

God Bless Her

Ashleigh will be excepted in heaven during the end of days. Will Obama? Jesus would be against the government option, it says so in the bible.

[My President is such a miserable failure that I'm reduced to causing trouble on websites and getting banned for it.]

Uhh... Red State needs to keep an eye on you.

Boy, Ashleigh's letter was so typical

marshmom (Diary) Friday, August 7th at 10:56PM EST (link)

of a white trash, hillbilly, cousin-dating Ellie Mae Clampet. The girl has more class in her nail clippings than these detestable liberals have in their entire regime!

As a matter of fact, as a female who also attended VSU and who certainly would’ve been at the same town hall meeting she attended had I still been at VSU, I find their comments about her doubly repulsive.

It just goes back to the same tired, typical liberal tactics they’ve used for the past umpteen years–don’t confuse people with facts or answers, just distract them with personal attacks and smears.

Yeah, that never helps.

jlucasmckay (Diary) Friday, August 7th at 10:57PM EST (link)

Ugly talk – even on message boards – never helps.

I’d like to hear the redstate take on two things:

1. How do you feel about regulating the practice of rescission? It seems to me that providing someone insurance for a couple of decades, and then dropping them when they file a claim, based on a technicality, is abusive. Although the quoted number is that this affects only 0.5% of customers, it seems likely that 100% of them “got sick” – otherwise their insurers wouldn’t have pored over their files for an appropriate technicality. Rescission adds directly to a private insurer’s bottom line. How do you get it to stop, without disrupting the insurance companies’ business model?

2. FedEx is eating the USPS’ lunch. FedEx is more expensive, but better, and went into business long after USPS was entrenched. Would you be opposed to the government as an insurer “of last resort” – as long as it didn’t disrupt private insurers?

Thanks guys.

The classlessness of Ollie and his supporters continues to astound

aesthete (Diary) Friday, August 7th at 11:38PM EST (link)

Ashleigh’s response, OTOH, was pure class, and was direct, polite, and well reasoned. Ashleigh, in her response, was a great exemplar of conservatism, and I hope that the fringe left will be disinclined to attack her on the Valdosta campus (though somehow, I doubt it).

The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice – G.K. Chesterton

Oliver Willis?

rec0n Saturday, August 8th at 12:55AM EST (link)

Hi folks – I’ve never posted, but have been a member for a few months(ish). I’m in WA, District 8, Dave Reichert, yes I know I watched him do it. He is aware of my feelings, and is apparently aware of several others judging from the comments left on his latest op-ed.

I visited Willis’ blog and left a couple of comments – both posts I read were so stupid I had to ask myself why I was bothering. I expected more.

I think Ashleigh will survive quite nicely, btw.

I’m curious about two things I’ve seen here, I haven’t figured out what they mean – nt & sc*ubbed. Scrubbed? I wasn’t able to figure it out in the context, any explanation would be appreciated : )

1-21-09 – We are so screwed… Wait… maybe not just yet.

thank you

rec0n Saturday, August 8th at 11:56AM EST (link)

and as for 1/21/09 – yes, we are.

But nothing else could have unified us so strongly, nothing else would do so much work for us in exemplifying exactly why conservatism is better than the alternative. Having a bunch of Republicans running around mouthing ideals would have been discounted as hypocritical crying – not so much now. In a way, Chicago was a gift. A Really sucky sucky sucky Super Sucky gift, but he (and Waxman Pelosi et all) are tremendously polarizing, and arrogant , and that works for us, not them. So even when I’m angry, I bare my teeth and smile. The only way we lose is if we go to the elections un-prepared for the same bs we saw at the last, and that we’re seeing now at the townhalls.

He keeps this up, we keep putting pressure on our Congressman and his – we might force a few balls to start rolling. We *might* clean our House before 2012 and belay some of the damage. Or we might not. Either way there’s a long road ahead.

Later
