And the WVs I have sopken to about it oppose it because, unlike strip mining (that they still have, mind), this type of mining is not subject to any reclamation laws.
The mountain is destroyed and left that way.

Furthermore, and, imo, more importantly, this style of mining is also not subject to the same laws on water contamination. Rivers and streams and lakes that were cleaned up after damage from strip mining are going the other way again.

Ban this mining? No. I don’t know anyone who wants it banned. Subject it to the same laws and regulations as strip-mining in that state? Most certainly.

They can mine vast amounts of coal using Long Wall mining which is sub surface and does nothing to the surface aside from som subsidence…I would say that would be much more preferential to strip mining which destroys everything from vegetation, geologic structure, and every living thing in the area being stripped…

I’m no wild eyed enviro nut by any means…and I’m for whatever is required to meet our energy needs….but there is a limit for me as there should be for all…

Now, if America had limited options for energy and topping off some medium to small mountains to keep us all in the modern world of prosperity, then I say, give them a flat top so the edison bulbs keep alight.

If at war, do whatever.

But, given the oil waiting to be drilled that the dem party has locked away and other coal areas, then its a reasonable reg, so long as mountain is reasonably defined.

But let’s not kid ourselves. If we had to choose between Dickens’ green America with wood stove smog and horse shit, we would top off every mountain in America.

The real issue here is less Lamar Alexander – the *real* issue is will Alexander be allowed to continue as the #3 Senate Republican?

The obvious answer, at this point, should be “No!” (and not just “No!” but “H*** No!!”).

So, really, the ball is in Mitch McConnell’s (and John Kyl’s) court – Are they going to sit there, once again, and do *nothing* about caucus discipline and holding members accountable? Or are there going to be real repercussions to Alexander’s increasing apostasy on bedrock Republican values?

Thus, this is really more about McConnell and Senate Republicans as a whole, than it is about Alexander.

If people want to have some fun with this, they should try calling McConnell’s office and ask them what they say about this…

Eric, you have no idea how lucky you are to actually have face time with Lamar. He tries to avoid that at all cost with his constituents (unless of course they can write him large checks). Being that the Pittsburgh Coal seam is 8 to 12 feet thick and runs under practically the whole state I don’t see much need for it either since Conventional and Long Wall mining techniques are more than adequate to extract the coal!

I never owned a pair and remember being indignant at my parents because they wouldn’t buy them for me…

I did if the plaid pants and turtle necks though…

and I did have a lime green polyester leisure that included a many shades of green paisley covered shirt with a monster collar…a huge knotted clip on white tie, a 35 inch wide white belt and white patent leather penny loafers…

It was hideous!
