One measure of a man is the ability to admit when they're wrong. Without caveats or excuses.

Erick couches his "manning up" by saying he was just giving the benefit of the doubt; he suggests that his aims were pure. That's not really what he did though. Showing support and withholding judgment is giving the benefit of the doubt; providing cover by printing unconfirmed opinions as "facts" is not. "At all times," Erick wrote, "there was no doubt that Sanford's staff and family knew where he was." He had no way of knowing that, and none of their contradictory quotes in the media backed that up. Essentially, Erick lied for someone and got stabbed in the back. The final result was unfortunate, but his readers deserve better from the outset.

Erick also noted at the time that he was off to Bible study, and that "Sanford probably has none of that." I think that need to diminish other Christians is plain unattractive. Sanford did frequent Bible study, yet he made mistakes. We forgive others their sins, even when they've betrayed us. We don't try to make ourselves seem better than them by itemizing our Christian bonafides.

I do respect that Erick has kept his previous posts up. Many bloggers and reporters would delete them without comment.

I believed he went hiking because there was no reason at the time to think otherwise. People tend to see in others things they see in themselves. People who lie tend to think others are lying. People who cheat tend to think others are cheating. People who are trustworthy will generally assume others are the same, there is no shame in that.

Part of the Appalachian Trail runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina in the Smoky Mountains. It's very beautiful and a nice place to go if you want to get away from civilization, as there are literally only a couple roads that run through the entire area. I've hiked part of it myself. If somebody told me they were going there, I'd admire their good taste. End of story.

between incompetence and lying. We often expect the former, but we believe the latter is rare enough that we should believe what people say when they say it, absent past history demonstrating that trust might be misplaced.

Sanford's lies and indiscretions are unfortunate and sad but do not affect me nor anyone else outside of his family and circle of friends. Even the dear citizens of South Carolina cannot really claim damage. The lies and falsehoods issued daily from DC is damaging the entire nation threatening to place us in greater economic and physical peril. Sanford did his best to refuse the stimulus to his state. The citizens should be thankful for his tenacious stand. Too bad he was not as strong protecting his marriage.

I am sorry, I usually love RedSteate emails but have been hurt, was rear endedd June 16 and have been a fragile, weak woman foir ten years now. I haven't read daily emails but today I noticed that Monday's had Red Mass Group. Thank you! I live in MA and had no idea we had red group.

I have been watching Fox news tonight, Stanford committed the dumbest thing he could do,worse than cheating on his wife, he emailed the woman. My boss told me at least six years ago do not ever email anything you do not want anyone else to read. He has to go. I think we will have Mitt Romney in 2012, hopefully w/Palin.

Greta is a lefty and has all those emails, which I have no interest in reading.

What happens with the governer of South Carolina, should stay with the people of South Carolina. He doesn't own me anything, no more than Mayor Bill White in Houston(I live in Spring not Houston).

Their making state issues national since it happens to not fit what they want. This is one reason I trying to stay away from such threads because in the end it moves you away from what we should targetting.

From the WSJ today:

"South Carolina Rep. Bob Inglis made a name for himself in the late 1990s as one of Bill Clinton’s most zealous pursuers, an impeachment “manager” who attacked the moral failings of the president with a gusto that earned him a devoted following in the staunchly conservative “Upstate” of conservative South Carolina.

But with his governor now felled by similar temptations, Inglis sees an opening for the Republican Party, a chance to “lose the stinking rot of self-righteousness” and “to understand we are all in need of some grace.”

This is not “Bob Inglis 1.0,” the one that was a “self-righteous” expletive, he said in an interview with Washington Wire today. It is a Bob Inglis that is, if anything, more Christian, more attuned to the Gospels, he said."

1. I'm tired of hearing about the sex lives of our elected officials. So he chooses not to honor his marital vows, must he fail so loudly, conspicuously, and sloppily?

2. This is not a national news story. This is a legitimate story for South Carolinians, not the rest of us. I live in Texas, he has no obligations towards me. Only if he had the audacity to run for national office would I feel that I needed this piece of information.

Otherwise, I seriously don't care. This was only a story to begin with because it was lies to begin with. He's only coming clean because his lies failed to convince. I don't demand that elected officials be faithful. That's their business, not mine. And I DON'T want to hear about their measure of success or failure in this area.

So if nothing else, look up the word "discretion." It's not flying to Argentina!

It seems pretty much given how the left is going to play this out….

Rule 4: Make opponents live up to their own book of rules. “You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”

Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

Is everyone going to fall prey to this again, playing the same game?

I appreciate your post very much and I hope that all RedStaters are willing to pray for that family right now. Governor or not, he is a man, and is imperfect as we all are. He will be better from this, whether or not he is in public service or not.

...it's about accepting uncritically the statement of a government office and reporting it as "mystery solved!"

The irony is that conservatives are typically on the side of smaller government and generally not believing it can do things correctly. Yet when it issues a statement in support of a guy you like, you take it as truth without skepticism. And present it as being morally superior for doing so.

Conservatives think any morally corrupt people are not worthy of high office. No matter what party they belong to. At least we are honest about that. I see that nobody is making excuses for him. That is heartening.

I am angry and outraged. But I am not sad. I don't regret. I am telling myself we are better off knowing now than 1 year later.

are the reason I became JadedByPolitics, it is never enough to feel you want to truly SERVE the people, that your heart is good and movement is just. They all fall into the trap of SERVING themselves and for that I am disgusted. He no more deserves to be forgiven nor allowed to be out of the spotlight. When these men use their positions of power to get some they should have the LIGHT shown on their failures!
