ABC News is reporting Judge Sotomayor has fractured an ankle en route from the airport to the Senate for meetings. Our prayers go out to her for a speedy recovery and minimal inconvenience.

No word on if she tripped over her “Latina woman” comment.

Government Motors versus Team Penske

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 1:56PM EST (link)

Roger Penske is taking over Saturn. I dont know all the detail, but I am going to go out on a limb and state Penske isn’t going to deal with any strings.

He’s know as a competitive cuss; is a racing giant; and knows a thing or two about cars.

If true, it will be great fun to watch Saturn run circles around the Gov/UAW.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31131864/

Sounds like Penske envisions a "free agent" Saturn network of dealers

6eorge Jetson (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 2:08PM EST (link)

to be supplied by whomever wants to deal

GM to supply Outlook, Vue, & Aura thru 2010

The deal will preserve 13,000 jobs and could close late in the third quarter, Penske told reporters Friday. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The deal includes the Saturn brand, the parts operation based in Spring Hill, Tenn., and a network of about 350 dealerships.

Penske said GM will supply the Saturn Aura sedan and the Vue and Outlook SUVs on a contract basis for at least two years, after which he envisions importing vehicles. He could form a venture with Nissan Motor Co., the Japanese affiliate of Renault SA, according to a source familiar with the talks.

Automotive News, an industry trade publication, has reported that Penske plans to import vehicles made in South Korea by Renault Samsung Motors and sell them through the Saturn dealership network.

With Saturns eventually being made by foreign automakers, Penske will benefit from lower overhead and likely will offer fewer incentives and fewer variations of the same vehicle, industry experts said.

“A typical corporation’s got major, major investments in production facilities and they need to keep those things running so we’ve seen them pump out more cars than the market will bear,” said Jack R. Nerad, Kelley Blue Book’s executive editorial director and executive market analyst. “That results in the need to do incentivizing and make major fleet sales, which has a negative effect on resale values. Penske won’t be burdened by that. This is blazing a new trail that’s an exciting one. He has a very good chance.”

Saturns will be outsourced

ashland_avenue (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 2:59PM EST (link)

I heard Penske say on WJR Detroit today that after two years US production of Saturns would be outsourced unless GM will be cost competitive.

So far, all Obama has managed to do is to decrease the size of productive America and increase the size of dependent America.

Is there an equally valid, less discriminatory nominee available?

ashland_avenue (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 2:53PM EST (link)

Will the selection of Sonya Sotomayer cause a disparate impact on litigants before the Supreme Court?

That is, will her presence alone cause negative consequences for non-minority litigants?

From the Ricci case:

The test, many argued, had a disparate impact against blacks and Hispanics, which is illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, explains Cornell University Law School. Disparate impact refers to a practice used by an employer that, intentionally or unintentionally, favors one group over a protected class.

“Where an employment practice has an adverse impact, it will violate Title VII unless (i) the practice is job-related and consistent with business necessity and (ii) there are no equally valid, less-discriminatory alternatives,” according to the Respondents’ brief for the Supreme Court case.

Is there an “equally valid, less discriminatory alternative” to a nominee who feels that as a Latina woman, she will bring a better result to legal issues?

Republicans have gained consideralby in voter trust rankings

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/trust_on_issues/trust_on_issues

Republicans are up by 6 points on the economy, 15 on National Security, 5 on Taxes, 8 on Iraq, 6 on Ethics, and 14 on Immigration.

The parties are tied on Abortion, and the Democrats lead by 10 on health care, 7 on education, and 6 on social security.

These usually fluctuate a lot from month to month (ethics had a 17-point shift from last month, for example) but since Republicans have gained relative trust in all but 2 categories (abortion stayed equal, and taxes went down 2 points), It’s safe to say the Republicans are gaining traction in the electorate

Rasmussen also ranks these issues in terms of importance, measure in how many people say that issue is important to them, and the GOP holds the lead in 4 of the top 5 (in order, Economy 81%, Ethics 76%, Social Security 59%, National Security 58%, Taxes 54%).

I hadn’t seen Richard Mourdock (State Treasurer of Indiana) before, but he was great in the interview. He covered a lot of ground, but focused on the Rule of Law. He pointed out that team Obama will whine all day long about what they perceive as violations of the law by the previous administration, but then throw out the rule of law in a bankruptcy proceeding as a payoff to their union friends.

Bartiromo gave him lots of room to run, and asked excellent questions.

Yes. It showed the advantage of having just two people,

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Church group banned from public housing in Oklahoma

molybdanthan (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 7:57PM EST (link)

New Unconstitutional decision based on religious intolerance found in a very Red State.

This from James Osborne at Fox News, and linked at Drudge.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,525424,00.html

“A Christian evangelical group that works to improve the lives of underprivileged children says it has been prohibited from conducting Bible study classes in public housing projects in Tulsa, Okla., potentially violating a Supreme Court ruling that upheld religious groups’ right to the use of public institutions.

“Mathew Staver, founder of the Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based law firm specializing in religious cases, said he will file a lawsuit in federal court against the housing authority if the fellowship isn’t allowed back in.

” ‘The rules are fairly straightforward,’ he said. ‘Some people dig their heels in and don’t want to deal with it.’

” ‘There is a mistaken notion if you allow equal access to a religious group, you’re violating the Constitution.’

“The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that religious groups are afforded the same right as any other citizens’ group to use and meet in public institutions, including schools and government buildings.”

* * *

This is happening where I live. And of course it’s not being reported. But we have some good local radio hosts, so we’ll get the message out.

They are not residents

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 8:32PM EST (link)

.The projects are for the residents. If the projects are considered government property just like the library meeting room they should have access to residents apartments/homes.
Having seen this stuff first hand I would argue with the first statement of “works to improve the lives of underprivileged children.” I don’t like the” we are keeping children from prison ” argument as a way of justifying their being there in spite of the rules. The residents of projects should have some of the same rights as other leasers and access should be restricted to residents and their guests. Because they are low income is not a justification to allow non residents to enter.

I'm sure that's how they justified barring the Church group

molybdanthan (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 9:18PM EST (link)

I just found this, so I’m unclear about the details. And that’s where the Devil is.

This was the quote that stood out:
“[Tulsa Housing Authority] said they have a policy now whereby we can’t come in and talk about God or Christ,” Koehn said. “We can come in and play games and talk about moral things, but we can’t mention the name of God.”

It sounds like another separation of church and state issue.

If the group was causing problems I could see barring them. But the story doesn’t indicate complaints from the residents.

The article indicates the issue is content, not residency

civil truth (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 9:38PM EST (link)

Apparently the group isn’t being barred because they’re non-residents (and I don’t know why a resident couldn’t invite them in), it’s because they’re conducting Bible studies and speaking about God. Nothing in the Fox article talks about their violating policy because they’re non-residents.

Rather, according to the Fox article:

And for more than two decades, the fellowship has hosted a religious-themed summer program in Tulsa’s tough housing projects, designed to keep children from falling victim to the temptations of drugs and crime.

But recently, the fellowship was told that it was in violation of a long-standing policy prohibiting religious instruction on public housing property, said Larry Koehn, who heads the organization’s chapter in the city.

“They said they have a policy now whereby we can’t come in and talk about God or Christ,” Koehn said. “We can come in and play games and talk about moral things, but we can’t mention the name of God.”

That is, apparently as non-residents they would be allowed in so long as they don’t engage in religious speech. That policy going to be difficult to defend against legal challenge, especially since the Fox article notes also that

The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that religious groups are afforded the same right as any other citizens’ group to use and meet in public institutions, including schools and government buildings.

God and specifically Christianity seem to be making the rounds yesterday and today on Redstate.

first question are projects considered

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 11:09PM EST (link)

public institutions that anyone can meet in. There is a security guard and the projects and it’s only suppose to be for residents and guests. Maybe that is breaking the law? What part of the projects would be considered public. Is it just the community room? The parking lot? Resident’s apartments? If you look at the lease for these places they are huge and full of rules.

They might be totally wrong with their reason saying it’s due to a law banning religions instruction but I think the part about it’s up to the resident association should be looked at, and if they are guest they should follow the rules for guests & residents as far as noise levels and so forth, disturbing other residents, etc.

There's no way to comment on a RedHot post

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 12:32PM EST (link)

..except in those rare instances when the poster opens his post to comments. By default, comments are closed on RedHot posts.

This means that we either have to wait for an open thead post, or if we have enough substantive commentary, create a new diary. Or wait and hope someone else starts a diary on the same topic (which does sometimes happen). Or do what you did and find some other place to start a conversation, which has the unfortunate consequence of leaving one open to censure for starting a threadjack.

In this case, the reason I made my rejoinder was not to criticize you, though, because I thought that you had accidently misplaced your comment – as you had specifically addressed your comment to Jaded, but (1) the thread had no prior comment regarding Megan Fox; and (2) Jaded had not commented on the thread.

That made me think that Jaded had made a comment elsewhere and that you had accidently responded to her here – and I wanted to give you a heads-up so that you could find the correct thread and post your reply there where Jaded would have a better chance of seeing it. I was trying to be helpful.

But yes, this is one of the frustrating aspects of RedState: there have been a fair number of RedHots that I’ve wanted to comment on but couldn’t because of the closed comments default.

molybdanthan (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 12:38PM EST (link)

Kowalski: as itrytobenice has noted, this is an Open Thread

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 12:39PM EST (link)

So this is exactly the forum you would start a new thread.

Although you’d normally start a new thread as a “reply” to the main post rather than intrude on an existing thread on a different topic.

What was confusing, as itrytobenice noted is that this comment started de novo in the middle of a thread discussing a completely different topic – and that its being addressed to Jade suggested that it was a misplaced comment rather than an attempt to start a new thread (which as noted earlier should have started at baseline).

I enjoy your being here at RedState.

I was looking forward to watching Transformers. It is a shame the autobots really are more likely to relate with middle america than the self loathing weenies of the left coast who would urinate in their pants if they were faced with giant transforming robots. Actually, they had someone play Megan Fox in the original film, can you guess who played her. It was that spoiled girl riding in the Cadillac SUV that had a fit because Sam hit her vehicle with the cube, then the vehicles wheel stuck to her face, just imagine that is the real Megan Fox.

What is even funnier is that most of the military men and women portrayed in the film as heroes come from that loathesome middle America. What a dope. Anyway, I guess we got off topic here.

I’m thinking that 2012 is a really long way away instead of just 3 and one half short years. I’m thinking that 2012 is a lifetime away.

Just a thought on Sotomayor's broken ankle from a Registered Nurse's perspective

Elizabeth Christian (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 8:19PM EST (link)

If Sotomayor did not know her ankle was broken until after she arrived on her flight (which is what I heard reported on the radio this evening) then why did Sotomayor not know her ankle was broken? Judge Sotomayor has had diabetes since being a child we were told in her presentation from the state-run media therefore she has been a life-long diabetic. A lot of diabetics have a condition called neuropathy which means they cannot feel an area well on their body (usually their feet/lower legs). This could be a sign her diabetes is not being controlled well or because she has had diabetes so long. Also, people do not heal as well usually when they are diabetic, if they keep their blood sugar under control then they usually heal better. I do not know Judge Sotomayor’s status on her diabetes but just a thought – could this be a sign her health / diabetes not doing well? I hope not – politics aside I wish her well with her health – I just thought of this today when the story broke.

Elizabeth Christian (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 8:21PM EST (link)

when I said – I hope not – I mean I hope that she is not having problems with her diabetes/health – just wanted to make sure that was clear after re-reading my comment ; )

molybdanthan (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 8:43PM EST (link)

If so, disregard the rest of this.

I was just wondering if it was staged. Might sound conspiratorial, but this sudden injury could be phony.

Perhaps to get Sotomayor some sympathy, although the Senate Judiciary Committee was already pretty sympathetic to her.

Or, is it more likely this will give O an excuse to take her out of the running. The Dems might not have liked the way it was shaping up, and want somebody else.

That thought occurred to me, too.

It is tougher to put one’s foot in one’s mouth if one’s ankle is broken. In that case, how is Biden’s health?

– The sign outside the courthouse said no signs allowed. So I took it down.

Hey, hows that hope and change workin' for ya ? Hamas uses new donated ambulances for terror.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 8:44PM EST (link)

Anybody got an idea what the $900 million we sent to them is gonna be used to buy?

Truckloads of pixie dust and zoos full of rainbow-painted unicorns ?

The answer may be something like this……..
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/131771

Hamas has stolen dozens of donated ambulances and is using them in its campaign of intimidation against Gaza civilians, Palestinian Authority officials have reported. The report, published in the PA paper Al-Hayyat al-Jadida, was translated by Palestinian Media Watch.

The ambulances in question were donated earlier this year, during Operation Cast Lead. Hamas took 46 ambulances, confiscated the expensive medical equipment inside, and converted the vehicles to police vans.

The vans were then used during arrest campaigns targeting civilian political dissenters, the PA charged.

Has anyone noticed that VA has been plastered with the McFraudiffe signs?

DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 9:30PM EST (link)

I mean we are talking about some serious over placing of Terry McFraudiffe signs all over Lake Ridge. Lake Ridge is in Prince William County and it is usually a very well kept neighborhood except for the Democrat signs all over the medians.

These signs are like rabbits they multiplied over night. There were 8 in one stretch of the median last night then this morning to my surprise they gave birth to 12 new signs a 1/8 mile down the road, then I saw some very small ones that were left out of the Terry sign family farther up PWCounty Pkwy. What’s going on?

Optimism but concern

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 7:11PM EST (link)

Just how bad the BLUE-ism infestation is many places, the degree of stupidity (above and beyond that) that remains in the Style Over Substance clowns remains with how long they’ll keep their heads up their hindsides following all their 2006/08 votes in ANY given area of the country, ACORN looking to “assist” ever more/new territories reach the “proper” outcomes (in the ACORN mindset), the Baracklash (wish I could remember the RSer that gave me that to acknowledge), etc… means we can be Optimistic but still gives me some “concern.” FOX was reporting “Deed” as the probable Democrat as they try to “Conservative” their nominee knowing what/how the battle will be shaped. That on the one hand is great, as they admit the “needs,” but is still some concern (as going back to the afore mentioned “concerns”) as we’ve seen the Democrat CINOs/PLINOx have duped far too many (asleep at the switch and easily fooled) folks into pulling that JackAss lever lately.

Are people really waking up that “Conservatisism” in actual/real direction for any part or the whole of the country is only going to come through the Republican Party, again plenty of CINOs/PLINOs out of Democrats that then just give control over to the Liberal left. Of course, too many Republicans went lax on the right direction themselves, but none-the-less it is the ONLY place it is going to actually return while the Dem’s play with Conservative “sounding” candidates to compete for (read: Dupe or Steal) the votes. There are things to be “Optimistic” about but there is still alot of work to be done in waking up the masses to “acknowledge” they made mistakes with Democrats/Obama and reverse their bad habits of late.

DONTREADONME (Diary) Wednesday, June 10th at 9:11PM EST (link)

Every Governor that wins has to convince he is conservative in one area or another. Just look at our Senators in VA, Webb and Warner, they both claim to be Conservative on topics such as gun rights, partial pro-life, fiscal conservative, defense hawk etc; however, if the blue state transplants keep moving here I do not know if the state will stay this way since all of the blue state locusts bring their politics down to the south and destroy prosperous states. It is the blue state cancer that needs to be excised, because I do not know how much longer we have before it metasticizes.

I think? Civil, you enjoying yourself over there with Mr comic strip? He seems to have some serious issues with Christianity being the dominant religion of this country, but what I do not understand is what his problem is with it? Seriously, Christianity does allow for the coexistence of other religions, well at least the Catholic Church that I was raised in allows for the peaceful coexistence of all people. Anyway, I find his comments and his inability to stop the disucssion rather telling about his personality.

I still find our discussion moving forward

I think...

DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 11:25PM EST (link)

I jumbled a sentence up in my previous comment. What I meant is the conversation that I have been monitoring seems to just go on and on with maybe some minor progression; however, I am glad you have the will to engage, my issue is when is a discussion about Christianity’s influence on American society and culture truly finished with him. i.e. when will stalemate occur?

What I have learned about my conversations with people on the topic of Christianity based ethics and morals the people are either 90% with you or they are engaged in an effort to convince you of your misguided understanding. In those latter cases, a major offensive which you have taken on is in order; however, I am much better with those discussions in person and you are very good in the written conversation. (because I do not know you)

I would just say one thing, there should be no question that this nation has been very strongly influenced by Christianity, it is obvious. We see this influence everyday, form the holidays we celebrate (given that some have continued with pagan influence), the morals we espouse and how we interact with one another. When I say interact I mean, manners, thank you, hi, how are you doing?, good morning, sir,. maam, excuse me, please etc. A polite interaction between people fostered by the teachings of Christ, love your neighbor as yourself, turn the other cheek, and from Judaism we have the Ten Commandments (lies in this country are still very damning, adultry, etc)

Anyway, I definitly a little more receptive to discussing this with you than mr sequitor.

Well at this point, the ball is in his court to e-mail me if he wants to continue

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 1:01PM EST (link)

But as far as “stalemate” – that occurs when (1) it is clear the other person is not conversing in good faith; or (2) it becomes clear that at least one of us has reached a point where nothing the other person could say would change one’s mind – that is, there is no willingness to change further.

And in my experience, at least 90% of the time (if not higher), (2) arises not because of intellectual issues, but because the person doesn’t want to change something in their lifestyle that they know that they would have to change if they became a Christian. And almost always, that “something” is related to sex, or less commonly, having to let go of treasured life scripts.

In other words (2) is a subset of not being willing to let God have authority over one’s life, which in turn is another form of that most primal of sins: wanting to be one’s own god.

I almost always avoid direct debates on Christianity here at RedState because I can detect from the conversations involving other RedStaters that (1) or (2) is operative.

This conversation I was having with non-sequitur thus far has been the exception to the rule, though it easily could end up in stalemate at any time (and if it does, I would put my bets on (2) – lifestyle).

you nailed me on (2)...

DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 1:17PM EST (link)

for this one. I definitely am OK with people disagreeing with me on this topic. For most other things and topics on Redstate, I can get into the argument, but for once in my life (probably not) I find myself at peace with others disagreeing with me and feel no desire to argue. I do, however, like to opine once in a while as we can see two or three times over on that thread.

Heh, if you can convince him on your points then you have some very influential capabilities that are worth noting.

Civil_truth, I e-mailed you. Hope it worked.

penguin2 (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 1:29PM EST (link)

Just wanted to reiterate my appreciation for your writing and knowledge. Maybe I’m a little naive, but I thought your thread with non-sequitur was good, and from the few exchanges I had with him in that thread, I gleaned some reasonable information. For myself, I realized that one may not convince the other side to change their viewpoint and vice versa, but sometimes there can be modification of perceptions.

Thanks.

Great title under the Helping Each Other section in the 6/15 Woman’s World magzaine. “Just look what hope and hard work can achieve!” It shares the story of a mother of 4 that went from Dallas projects to a Habitat/Whirpool home. The story is there because of the house part (helping each other) but in the story it tells how she got her GED and entered a work program sponsored by the Dallas Housing Authority (she was sent to do various jobs) and when she worked at the accounting office they asked her to stay and train, and eventually she was able to get off most government assistance.
Honesty I saw the first line of Just look what hope and..and put the magazine down I coldn’t bear to see another hope and change, this was a pleasant surprise to see hard work on the next line!

Bird Flu Pandemic?

olsmithie (Diary) Thursday, June 11th at 2:00PM EST (link)

Someone please erase my ignorance.
The latest numbers for deaths due to regular old flu collected by the CDC (2003) say something like 36,000 deaths(US) per year in the ’90s.
Now there have been 141 deaths worldwide and the WHO declares a pandemic?

36,000 (no mention in news) vs 141 (pandemic)

Am I missing something, or are they just “refusing to waste a good crisis”?
