As word comes out that unemployment in the United States is even higher than Barack Obama’s worst case estimates, Obama is stepping up the public relations campaign.
President Barack Obama said on Monday he expected to create or save 600,000 jobs over the next 100 days by expediting 10 major projects funded by a huge stimulus package that Congress passed in February.
Sorry folks, the more Obama tries to create or save jobs, it seems the more people lose their jobs. You know, I am a locally elected official in Macon, Georgia — I serve on City Council. And we have been dealing with stimulus funds already.
Most of the funds we have handled have focused on funding bureaucrats. Just last week in City Council, we were asked to ram through a $120,000.00 spending bill. It has to be done quickly and spent within 100 days on a “shovel ready project.” A lot of worthy projects in town got axed, because of the time limits. And most of the money will just go to the bureaucracy.
Here is an email from a friend in the private sector dealing with stimulus funds. He is having, in the private sector, the exact same experience I am having in government:
I am an environmental engineer by trade. As you know, much of the ARRA/stimulus money that is being proposed by the administration is being “pumped” into infrastructure projects. I deal specifically with municipal infrastructure every day and have clients across the state that are currently competing for this money. I can’t speak for all infrastructure, but I can speak in great detail on water and sewer specific projects.
Not one penny has been spent on construction projects in the state. The only people kept busy by this program so far have been the bureaucrats. The regulators (EPD/EPA and the funding agencies (GEFA, USDA- both state and federal) are the main folks that are benefiting from this money so far. There is so much red tape to actually get the money through to the end user that everything is stuck with the paper pushers. I have got to laugh when we hear how this money is impacting the economy. From a state standpoint, we have only helped to keep state agencies from cutting back staff… wow, what a great policy…
Exactly. This is exactly how Obama’s stimulus is working in the real world. And that is exactly why unemployment projections are so radically worse than what Obama projected.

And that is exactly what the Federal Government needs to do.
Get the feds out of the business world and tell them to quit minding your business.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
While I agree with your conclusion, there are some businessmen in their right minds who are hiring.
The_Gadfly (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 12:57PM EST (link)But they are in specific sectors that need more workers. Walmart is one company that comes to mind. The company where I work is also trying to expand in areas where we need to (granted, we’re beltway bandits, but recession or growth we ought to be expanding for the areas we are trying to cover).
The problem with the so called stimulus package is that it isn’t trying to target areas of the economy that could productively be expanded. It’s just pumping money like mad into the system and hoping something magical happens and good stuff comes out the other. And since it’s going in without a plan, somewhere in the near future, inflation is going to take off and we’ll be in an even worse spot.
and some biz runs in the opposite way of the economy

Pinball is a counter-cyclical industry
Finrod (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 10:15AM EST (link)Unfortunately, there’s only one pinball company left in the US and it’s in Chicago. Pinball production in the US went from 100K machines/year in 1991 to around 15K/year by the end of that decade, which is why Williams/Bally got out of the business and Sega/Data East sold its pinball interests to Gary Stern.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?
It's becoming obvious
Hera Monday, June 8th at 12:17PM EST (link)that the “stimulus” plan is not working and since the GOP did not support it, there is no where for Obama and the Dems to hide. It’s their “stimulus” plan supported by the Dem Congress and Dem President so it is their failure.
At this point, they're all trying to hide behind George W. Bush.

Reaching Out
Hera Monday, June 8th at 1:54PM EST (link)The whole purpose of Obama’s “reaching out” to the GOP was to give the Dems political cover when the stimulus failed.Fortunately the GOP didn’t take the bait. This is the Obama “stimulus” plan which was designed to deliver most of the jobs “saved” or created in 2010 to help the Dems in an election year.Unfortunately for Obama the employment rate is worse then the Dems predicted it would be without a “stimulus” . The 9.4% unemployment figure is all Obama, the GOP and Bush had nothing to do with it.People have begun saying the “stimulus” has not worked which is why the big push today to “save” or create 600,000 jobs by the end of the summer.

If we just wanted the problems blamed on the prior guy, why not McCain? He was real good at blaming Republicans.
So, when does the public say, “We don’t care if it was Bush’s fault, you were hired to fix it?”

I find it completely amazing there is no talk from Democrats about fiscal restraint and responsibility. There is only mendacity about “hitting the brakes hard” when things start to come back. Sure, we now have the most massive government spending program on the horizon (health care) yet, we will “hit the brakes’? What tripe. When has government EVER done that.
What we have done is dig a very deep hole in the name of parochial politics on the backs of taxpayers and future generations of Americans. It will prolong a recovery that would have eventually come much sooner (and cheaper).
Look at the job loses; just one example that what was done prevented nothing and made our situation worse.

Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 8:31AM EST (link)I am not complaining. I have stated my opinion regarding the stimulus package. You asked me what I have said to my local GOP chair about it. I am active in politics in other ways, which I have explained. I have written several letters to the RNC as well. I am already signed up to volunteer on the Toomey campaign.

Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 10:21AM EST (link)Was this moderators wake up on the wrong side of the bed day? I make one comment, no different from dozens of other comments made by other people. For some reason, Moe decides to be an a#$hole and jump on it, with no logical or intelligent explanation.
Then I respond, and explain some things. Again, Moe is unwilling or incapable to explaining himself, or why he decided to attack my comments. Now mbecker comes along, and tells me I have time to waste, despite my explanations that I don’t. And then presumes to tell me to get back on the committee and go to war. Well, guess what, I tried that. When legal charges are being thrown back and forth like candy, audits are happening, and actual fights are breaking out, and you are the only person on your committee under the age of 60 and it is a good old boys club, the reality is that there is not much that you can do. So I decided that it would be a better use of my time to go around them. I can tell you that through my activities, I have already reached more people than they have. This is not to pat myself on the back, it is merely to point out to you that not having all the facts has led you to inaccurate conclusions.
And don’t tell me that I am the problem. If you have any decency, write a cogent explanation of yourself, detailing just why it is that two respected commentators decided to take a normal comment and act like children, or apologize.
Your explanation is akin to that of a four year old.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 10:27AM EST (link)And you’re a whiner. Get in the fight or get over it. And your characterization is worthy of a bout with TheBlamStick™, just be happy I don’t wield it.
You’re part of the problem. You “were” involved and things got messy so you wimped out and now you sit home, suck your thumb and write letters that get tossed into a shredder.
Your “comment” wasn’t “normal”. It was an exercise in “Oh Poor Me” and we don’t have time for it. I’m sure Moe will accept your apology, he’s a sweetheart. As for me, I could care less about you, you’re simply a bump in the road to progress. Spend your time writing to your local paper, you’ve got pretty much nothing to offer here.
Missed the point entirely, mbecker
Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 10:49AM EST (link)You still haven’t explained what it was about the original comment that caused Moe to start all of this. I was merely pointing out a concern of mine. It was no different than any other. That is the question that I have been putting out for the last several times. So I challenge you once again, read my original comment, and explain why that specific comment, which is not any different from many comments made in many other threads, in that it merely points out something that I think Republicans are missing, was worthy of such a hubbub. Moe asked me if I had mentioned it to my GOP chair. I answered. And now both of you have the arrogance to assume that you guys, who know absolutely nothing about what is going on here, know what it is that I should be doing? There are no excuses that I am making, simply explanations. I will refer you to my original comment, I have conveyed my thoughts to the Toomey campaign, as I believe that this is a tactic that Arlen Specter will probably utilize. To be fair, it was my mistake not to mention that earlier.
You’re responses have done nothing to address the substance of my challenge. So once again-are you capable of doing so?
And I’m glad that there are at least some people in this world like you who can so easily put themselves in others shoes and decide just what it is that they should be doing, without full knowledge of the situation. It must be a gift that God grants to only a select few.
You're just not really bright are you.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 10:58AM EST (link)I don’t explain anything for Moe.
And I didn’t miss the point. The point being that you’re a wimp. You’re making excuses and you’re too self absorbed to admit it. The very idea that you think “writing letters” and “calling talk shows” accomplishes anything is a testament to a well worn single digit IQ.
OK Moe, lets put the insults aside
Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 11:22AM EST (link)I will as well.
I still am unable to understand why my original comment was worthy of such a response. That is what I meant when I said that you missed the point. I would like an answer, we can chalk up all the rest of this stuff to differences of opinion.
Call me a wimp if you want, but when my family starts getting drawn in, and I walk in on my mom crying because she hears what is going on, I decided that it was not worth it. I had hoped to avoid having to mention that. I would also point out that I will be graduating in 6 months and working abroad for several years. I accused you of not writing supported arguments, but I will admit to not giving full explanations myself.
And I have had some success writing op-eds. Several people have written in positive responses, as well as the expected histrionics from some others, and I have met several people who mention that they read them. I do think that such methods are often overlooked in terms of their ability to circumvent the establishment and take conservative ideas to people directly.
We may not reach an agreement, but lets find some way to agree to disagree on civil grounds. We have more constructive things to accomplish here at Redstate.
We don't want you accomplishing constructive things at RedState.

Y'know Moe
Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 1:09PM EST (link)I tried to be conciliatory and end this nonsense.
You telling me that I am just here to complain sure seems like an insult, one that was totally undeserved. I did not insinuate, I came right out and accused you. What right did you have at that time to make an accusation that I was only here to complain? If I had previously indicated that I was unwilling to engage in any activity in support of my concerns, you would have been justified.
Don’t ever presume that you are knowledgeable enough to tell me what I should be doing. If you really don’t care what I do, then why act like it was your job to criticize me for not? You asked me a question, I answered. You found it necessary to accuse me of merely complaining. I will not tolerate such arrogance. I was further criticized, and I continued to respond. It seems to me like continuing criticisms indicate interest, right? I am here for the informative diaries and to engage in and learn from intelligent conversation and debate, and until today, that is what I have experienced here.
And now I will nitpick-I said HERE at Redstate, not FOR Redstate. You can think whatever you want, but I am doing what I feel is most effective for someone in my position to help advance the Republican party and conservative ideas. You can agree or disagree, but don’t be arrogant enough to think that someone in your position, with no knowledge of the specific circumstances, is qualified to tell me what I should or should not be doing.
This is totally counter productive. But I have a real problem letting people get the last word. Unfortunately, I fell pray to the childish urge to insult the intelligence of you and Mbecker as well. That was a mistake on my part. So all of this nonsense started with you making a comment that uncalled for and pointless, and me not being able to resist the impulse to ignore it.

Moe Lane (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 1:32PM EST (link)I’m not saying that you can’t complain, here. Heck, this may be the only place where you can complain safely. But but doing nothing but complain here doesn’t actually do anything for either the GOP or conservatism except make you feel personally better, and it can very easily counteract even that by making other people feel a little bit worse.

Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 2:08PM EST (link)Please actually read what I have written. I am not just complaining. I am telling you the facts. I have described what I am doing. You can agree or disagree, I don’t care. But you know, people can do other things for the GOP and conservatism besides what Moe Lane deems acceptable.
And the county GOP chair is related to two people on the county board who decide what companies get county contracts. Since I have several family members who are currently depending on county contracts for work, and have been told in no uncertain terms that if I don’t back off, they will not get them. Between that ant the other factors, I decided that it was the best decision to cease involvement with the county GOP. As I have repeated, you don’t know what you are talking about, so stop acting like you do.
This does not mean that I have given up the fight, however. There are other means, and I have been using them.
So to all of those following along, I won’t pretend to be able to tell you what the most appropriate thing you can be doing is. I’ll just encourage you to stay in the fight, and do so by whatever means you find to be the most effective.

Beaglescout (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 11:14AM EST (link)Some Republicans, both in the Congress and outside, have made plenty of cases for lowering taxes as a way to create jobs. Best would be to completely repeal the corporate tax rate down to zero percent. Same with capital gains. Repeal the 404 section of Sarbanes-Oxley. And stop making (unconstitutional) retroactive changes to the law and to contracts. That is what will bring back jobs and business.

We need to expose as many people as possible
Aetius728 Tuesday, June 9th at 12:32PM EST (link)to these ideas.
Unfortunately, far to many people(at least in my experience) have no concept of the fact that jobs created in the private sector are created because they are actually contributing something of value to society while jobs created by government are not.
And when many people hear about tax cuts for businesses, they think “big business giveaways! How evil!” and not, “oh, this will cause investment and expansion and more job creation.
Problems with the use of 'stimulus' to create/save jobs:
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 4:03PM EST (link)Many of the jobs that are being created are government-sector jobs. They are funded by the ‘one-time’ stimulus package. What happens after the package runs out? Either government’s annual payroll goes up permanently, or these new hires become new unemplyment statistics, delaying any recovery even longer.
ALL the jobs being ‘saved’ are government-sector jobs. They explained their rationale for claiming to have saved jobs this morning–they are all jobs that would have been layoffs at the state and local level had the states not been given stimulus money. So instead of states being able to ‘not let the crisis go to waste” and cut back unnecessary staff (yes, yes, I know–they were gong to lay off policemen and firemen–that’s another story about what’s wrong with government at all levels), the states keep a bloated payroll that they didn’t need even 5 years ago.
Even ‘shovel-ready’ jobs that do turn up are simply being moved ahead in time–they would have been done eventually, anyway. So, as seems to be the current MO, we are taking jobs away from the future to do them now.
This entire mess is caused by our government’s inability to say “No!” to anybody–potential (unqualified) home-buyers, lobbyists, seniors, you name it. We have therefore borrowed against future productivity to have now what we simply should have waited for. It may make sense for some capital-intensive projects, but it’s out of line for injecting a one-time, transitory, probably imaginary boost to the economy.
The only effective way to boost the economy is to leave more money in the hands of the people who produce it, not the ones who print it. That means immediate and permanent tax rate reductions across the board.

You've got me very wrong
dapperdan Monday, June 8th at 8:41PM EST (link)I love tax cuts – especially for me! But they are not an economic panacea. The cuts we’ve been enjoying for the past eight years or so have proven to be little more than a boat anchor of debt. The taxes weren’t cut. They were either postponed and/or transferred to somebody else for payment.
I’m for “pay as you go.” Cutting taxes first and praying for budget cuts is what we’ve been doing, and it hasn’t worked for the 30 years we’ve been at it. Let’s try cutting the budget first, and then enjoying some earned tax cuts.

I'm wasting my time, I know,
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 2:10AM EST (link)but one more time:
We’re on the right side of the tax revenue/tax rate curve. Lowering rates would increase revenues. I doubt that you’ll find anybody here who wouldn’t agree to cut budgets big-time.
The Bush tax cuts? Minimal at best. Helpful, but not a panacea, but they weren’t advertised to be. They were put in place to get us out of the recession that was starting as Clinton left office, and they worked to some extent. They certainly worked a heck of a lot better than $800,000,000,000 in proposed stimulus spending has worked.
An $800,000,000,000 tax cut this year would have immediately stimulated the economy. It could even have been spread over several years, because the expectations would have still done their job. And it wouldn’t have created a boom in government jobs. Obama has done precisely the wrong thing, every time.
Stuart Varney: “The stimulus plan is not working…. The stimulus plan was never an economic policy plan, it was a political document designed to insure Federal control over the states…. There’s no job creation in the stimulus plan…. $40 billion, aid to schools; $87 billion, Medicaid assistance; $17 billion, student aid; $27 billion, jobless benefits. Where are the jobs in that?”

Unfortunately
Adjoran (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 3:54AM EST (link)there comes a point in diminishing returns in cutting marginal income tax rates. When JFK enacted the first federal tax cuts, the top rate was 90%. Reagan lowered the then-top rate of 50% to 36%. That sort of reduction generates a lot of risk capital.
It’s still a hell of a lot better to lower rates and control and cut spending than to raise them and spend wildly (Obama’s “Stimulus” plan is the rough equivalent of throwing a trillion dollar bills into the air, trusting they will land in the right place), but the rate of new growth which can be generated by lowering rates is diminishing and we cannot expect another 20-year “Reagan boom” by simply lowering rates.
At some point, spending has to be addressed. And when I say, “addressed,” I mean “cut, drastically.”
Hmmmm. I hate to double down on the time-wasting thing,
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 4:16PM EST (link)but it seems to be appropriate.
Very good point, but it isn’t the point right now. Thanks to Obama, the tax rate(s) that would likely bring in maximum tax revenues is some hundreds (maybe more than a thousand) of basis points left of where we are today (very simplified). Reagan reversed a long-term systemic problem. We are faced today with a short-term problem caused by an incompetent administration.
I said, “The only effective way to boost the economy” when perhaps I should have said “The only way to stave off a recession under current conditions….”
That was meant to stand as an alternative to massive government borrowing to create government-mandated programs.
You say, “we cannot expect another 20-year “Reagan boom” by simply lowering rates.” Did I claim we could? But do you disagree that in the current situation, we wouldn’t improve things by lowering tax rates significantly, rather than by the current non-economic spending program?
Then,
That is so close to “I doubt that you’ll find anybody here who wouldn’t agree to cut budgets big-time” that I suppose your comment was intended to agree with me. So don’t consider any of this as a rebuttal to you; it’s just a clarification of my previous comments.
Sorry I don’t have time to spiff this up better.

You Can't Have the Jobs He's Created Either
BrianMcDaniel Monday, June 8th at 4:41PM EST (link)I just searched USAJobs.gov, the federal government’s official job site. There are over 327 jobs posted in the President’s home state of Illinois. Few, if any, are below the GS-9 level, which means you must have either 12 months of government service already or be near completion of a Master’s degree.
How many people who have recently lost their job really fit that criteria? Include bonus points for military service, it is hard to imagine that an average American has a decent shot at working for the Federal Government even if they wanted to do so.

dapperdan Monday, June 8th at 5:07PM EST (link)but I wonder what the numbers would be if there had been no stimulus at all?
Also, how do dollars know if they are public or private?
One can certainly prefer for ideological reasons that stimulus be private so we don’t accrue the debt, etc., but a stimulus is a stimulus – regardless of the source. A drop of rain in the desert is still rain.

According to the Obama,
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, June 8th at 7:54PM EST (link)the numbers wouldn’t have been this bad if they’d done nothing. Without the stimulus, they were predicting 8.5% unemployment. It’s 9.4% now, and rising. In fact, I agree with them. If they’d done none of this, we’d all be better off.
OTOH, less than $44 billion of the $800,000,000,000 stimulus package have actually been spent, even though the claim at that time was it “had to be passed NOW or it’s the end of the world.” I guess it just had to be passed, not actually spent.
Maybe that means it’s not too late to change their minds.
