over other broad swaths of people and groups; therefore, her statement can not be taken to be any different then what “Jimmy the Greek” said.

When you grow up in Elkton Maryland with a large group of KKK members living down the road in Rising Sun and in my school, saying the same types of things as she did, I can not give her a pass in her belief that somehow she by cause of her genetics is a superior in the role of judge than her white male counterparts. That my friend is a double dose of shovenism and racism.

I said my piece, of course you will disagree.

Although I think in this instance we should focus at least a bit on Sotomayor’s comments and the tone of racial superiority that came with it. If we are still focused on it after a week or so then we might have a problem. IMO we aren’t there yet, and the hand wringing about us going there is premature and more destructive to our argument against Sotomayor then the original argument its self.

The tone of what I suggested really wasn’t that different than that assumed by Limbaugh in his comments. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out what she said I guess (though obsessing over it would be a mistake), but the racist this and racist that stuff is almost always an error and should be, in my opinion, reserved for those rare cases where it’s really relevant (thinking David Duke or Robert Byrd).

I didn’t say I was going to call her a racist, I said I would call out racism in the context of her comment being racist.

Now can you answer the question from the title my my comment ?

I mean do you really think that because she is the first Hispanic to be appointed that she is incapable of racism…because that is how it sounded.

I think that there is definitely a qualitative difference between the two and that there is nothing wrong with being critical of the comment she made. I still think though, that it shouldn’t be a focal point of conservative opposition.

A statement is an “action”. Words matter – just ask Rush Limbaugh! I can only assume that Judge Sotomayor’s statement represents how she feels and how she decides her cases. The New Haven firefighters may know something about how the Judge’s statements are actions.

Show up at her confirmation hearing with giant placard with the words “RACIST RACIST RACIST” stenciled on it if you want. Spray paint “Sonia Sotomayor is a RACIST RACIST RACIST” on your roof in giant florescent letters while you’re at it. Just don’t kid yourself into thinking that you’re doing anything but hurting the conservative cause.

The point being that her Hispanic heritage shouldn’t even be a matter of discussion.

For instance, while I think it appropriate to call a statement racist (assuming you have some solid reason to back it up), calling Judge Sotomayor a racist is not productive and will not advance conservative or Republican interests.

Just as the questioning should focus more on jurisprudence rather than specific policy positions.

I’m not a big fan of calling people racists or charging them with racism. This has long been a favorite tactic of the left – I’ve been accused of it in the past for no other reason than having asserted my objection to various social programs. So it saddens me the degree to which the strategy has been embraced by the right over the last several years.

What Sotomayor said in 2001 was stupid and I’m sure she regrets it, but the ‘racist’ rhetoric really doesn’t help the GOP I don’t think. Not at all. I’d also point out the important distinction that your front page entry states that Gingrich and Limbaugh called her comments racist when in fact (at least in the case of Limbaugh) that’s not what he did – he called *her* a racist, full stop.

I’m sure that there are a lot of reasons to oppose Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation, but attacking the first ever Hispanic Supreme Court nominee as a racist is probably not in the best interests of the GOP.

They get media-whipped. The media has what they want (exposure). They realize they have to grovel and beg and kowtow to the MSM to get what they want.

Not that everyone ends up media-whipped. Some men have the guts to stand up for themselves and have a strong enough sense of self-respect to not need affirmation from the media.

Alas, too many Republicans lack that strength. They end up media-whipped.
