Charlie Crist: The Headline Says It All

“Gov. Crist signs $66.5 billion budget, breaks tax pledge”, the St. Petersburg Times headline reads.

This is the man the Senate Republican leadership has lined up behind. This is one of the men on whom the GOP will rely to rebuild the Republican majority.

For what?

Why have a Republican majority when we will get nothing different than what the Democrats offer?

There remains no compelling reason for the National Republican Senatorial Committee to have endorsed Charlie Crist. None.

I suspect the Florida primary voters will let him get away with it

TxCon (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 12:08PM EST (link)

by electing him as the nominee. Our base seems to talk big until it is time to actually vote. Then we vote the establishment guy with the most money. I say this because I was listening to Herman Cain on the radio this morning and wondering how in the world he lost to Johnny Isaakson.

I was outraged

Princeliberty Thursday, May 28th at 12:28PM EST (link)

Cain losing was simply an outrage. It did major damage to the party.

Cain would have been great on principle and great for helping the movement’s image and the party’s image.

Instead a unprincipled ugly creep was elected.

I think Cornyn, the NRSC, the RNC and the rest of the Vichy Republican Establishment is in for a rude awakening this go round…

They’ll keep calling us purists and calling us stupid for allowing Democrats to get elected because we won’t vote for any more Crist/Specter/Snowe/Collins RMSP types any more…

I for one woun’t be lining up with them and all the brow beating in the world won’t change it…I had enough of that in 2008!

The “Big Tent” analogy isn’t the correct one…the correct one is a MAGNET…we need to be a MAGNET that draws these independents in who are sick and tired of what’s going on in WashingtonFred Thompson

Their goal (in my opinion) is for Crist to win the primary and then lose the general election. They probably figure he’s a shoe-in for the primary, so they have skipped that step and are already mud-slinging for the general. Although I like the wording of the headline, the spirit behind it is different from ours.

We are going to have this same type of fight in Texas with Cornyn in a few years. He has really disappointed many here with his support of Crist. He is of the mindset we need to win at all cost, and that the only requirement is to have an “R” after your name.
And to all of you who think he maybe a hero….our governor is much the same way…

In FL Republicans control the Governorship, the House and the Senate, yet they seek to repeat at the state level the disastrous first six years of the Bush administration where we had complete Republican control. If that control can only return with people like Crist then we are doomed to repeat that history.

no longer surprises me the # of folks carrying (even drink and distribute) the Democrats Campaign rhetoric.....

The Liberal Campaign setup Headline Gov. Crist signs $66.5 billion budget, breaks tax pledge – By Marc Caputo, Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau

I understand those of you more than happy to tout this are doing so in the name of RUBIO….. Amazing how little you care to damage who may be the General Election candidate and yet will DEMAND he (Crist) work with us Conservatives for the GOP (still Conservative) Platform once (yes, “IF”) elected.

from the news-story:
Also, the budget includes $2.2 billion in new fees and taxes. Much of the new revenue comes from a $1-a-pack cigarette tax and higher fees on driving licenses and motor vehicle tags. Those who use the court system, visit state parks and even those who fish from beaches and bridges will pay more in fees.

The cigarette tax and most of the fees go into effect July 1.

Crist, who had repeatedly promised not to raise taxes, said Wednesday that the budget does not include “broad-based tax increases” — even though fees for the 15.6 million Florida driver licenses and 18.8 million registered vehicles will rise.

I don’t want Taxes raised on anyone, but as usual only part of the story is told (see: Crist and taxes [includes press-links] for more on it)….. The Republican Legislature (many of whom some of you would be more than happy to put up as wonderful Republican examples) were more than happy to send this to the Governor. Cigarette tax increases have become very acceptable (the Democrat CLASS-WARFARE and Health Care Nationalization rhetoric/tactics have made it far too acceptable among the masses – while Crist and FL Republicans resisted the latest direction Democrats insist on Taxing Foods/Drink (Fat Tax)…. Many other States, including some with Republican support have done these.

Vehicle related fees always go up, it is of course the “steepness” by which they climb and/or how much PROPOGANDA USE the Democrats can/will get out of pushing that narrative….. They thank you for helping them with that message!

more from the news-story….
Democrats, particularly in the House, assailed the tax hikes. They said Republicans did too little to close tax loopholes and made too many cuts to programs helping seniors and foster kids. “This budget was balanced on the backs of the middle class, the working men and women of our state,” said Rep. Martin Kiar, D-Davie.

Democrats crowed that next year’s budget will be propped up with $5.3 billion in federal stimulus money made available by a Democratic Congress and president. Without it, the state’s $6 billion budget hole would have been far harder to fill. The current year budget is $69.5 billion, including $4 billion in stimulus money.

Before I go on…. For the Record… I have donated to RUBIO, hopefully he can raise enough funds and carry enough momentum into the Primary to win and go on to win the General Election…. I’m not willing to engage in the degree of BURN DOWN THE OTHERS HOUSE so they also won’t win I believe others have committed to. Those who feel those shoes fit them will no doubt want to parade around in them and chime in again as we have gone around on this DAILY with each DAILY new anti-Crist/anti-NRSC Diary that comes along…. Because I am willing to CONSIDER the STRATEGY of Crist, well… I’ll stop there and let all RS readers decide based on the Diaries and the responses they are seeing….

The Democrats of course on and on with more Class Warfare…. The “loopholes” BS, sending the message that despite the other “hurts the Middle-Class and Poor” rhetoric play up the other end too “Crist and Republicans are protecting the Rich” …. amazing how they will again have it both ways…. and with Republican help, in the name of Fighting the Primary battle!

As promised, I will put forth (am again now) providing the “whole story” for people of FL to decide for themselves…..

Crist/Rubio 12pts – Crist/Rubio 12 points [with links] (since it has some links, I’m not going to try and recreate it all with cut/paste) /// Crist & taxes – Crist and taxes [includes press-links] /// sitting out elections banter – in depth Sit-It-Out discussion /// can one catch RINOvirus?
/// working together Post Election, or burnt bridges – standing up about working together /// Deli-story – Deli-story /// ZERO-strategy – ZERO-strategy /// Red-Dogs – Red-Dogs, RINOs, CINOs, DINOs, PLINOs, and Blue-Dogs, oh my… The Political Zoo – what/who are they? /// BLUE-ism – BLUE-ism /// Bi-Partisan – again, Bi-Partisanship has really been Democrats joining with Republicans (here) and here /// Primary McLame – going at McCain in a Primary, finally /// using Primaries to build up future candidates – using Primaries to build up future candidates

more from news-story….
Crist and Republican legislators acknowledged that the federal money was a must. But they said they needed to raise other revenues, trim about $1 billion in spending and beef up savings to $1.7 billion to protect the state’s bond rating and ensure there’s enough cash in the bank if times toughen.

Democrats, of course, demand that FL like CA just spend, spend, spend, well beyond its means and then qualify for yet more Federal BAILOUT that will come down the pike later….. This is NOT a DEMOCRAT TAX AND SPEND PLAN thanks to the FL REPUBLICANS! They DID CAVE beyond what anyone would want of Republicans – wanting more cuts and NO TAXES but this is hardly worse than many other States and in some cases FAR BETTER!

My apologies to those who DEMAND I not bother to look at this from all angles, and an eye to objectively viewing the best overall STRATEGY to move forward.

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 2:50PM EST (link)

All those who pay taxes are a victim to Crist’s follies as well the Party itself becomes a victim of his shenanigans especially because the NRSC decided to hold him up as some sort of standard bearer for the Republican Party of Florida.

Bottom line is Crist screwed up and made a pledge he didn’t intend to keep.

He is the one in the wrong here…not Rubio.

those comments had nothing to do with Rubio

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 3:21PM EST (link)

These comments have to do with how we try to straighten Crist out…..

As I have said…. I donated to Rubio and I hope he can garner enough support that would put him in a position to WIN THE GENERAL Election, based on the State makeup I hate to say I have doubts… but at least I am willing to honestly state that….. I did NOT give to Crist and I will NOT give to Crist if he is the General Election candidate AND he should NOT need cross-country financial support to win (which is part of the reasoning those backing him are doing so).

There is NO QUESTION Rubio is the more Conservative Primary candidate, but I do not want to throw the General Election to Democrats if Crist is the one on the General Election ballot.

I am more than happy for Rubio to be challenging Crist, and said so many times and in many of those other links I provided from other conversations, it is just that I am NOT willing to rip apart (from what it seems now) the General Election candidate…. We can criticize Crist all day long and he needs to be reminded it is CONSERVATISM (lies from many Democrats running as CINOs (the Blue-Dog myth)) that won most of the last election races. It is all, IMO, the question of TONE in how we go AT (Reagan’s 11th) Crist when we call him out on his failings! HE IS NOT THE BEST CHOICE in relation to Conservatism (with absolutely NO DOUBT) but he may be for the General Election race in question…. I know my willingness to try and view it objectively and see it that way as upsetting. I DON’T LIKE IT MYSELF… but that is IMO how it is, and others are more than free to see it another way.

Take care friend… Regards…. While All Politics Are Local…. it is now also true that All Federal Posts Elections Are National.

I am also supporting Simcox over McLame! McCain needs a slap upside the head.

He could have shown some leadership and vetoed, he made his choice and now he has to live with it.

I first stand by

Democrats, of course, demand that FL like CA just spend, spend, spend, well beyond its means and then qualify for yet more Federal BAILOUT that will come down the pike later….. This is NOT a DEMOCRAT TAX AND SPEND PLAN thanks to the FL REPUBLICANS! They DID CAVE beyond what anyone would want of Republicans – wanting more cuts and NO TAXES but this is hardly worse than many other States and in some cases FAR BETTER!

This was/is NOT all on Crist…. and I have yet to see/hear the Diaries about raising funds to fight each and every Republican in the State of FL that voted for these Taxes/Budget!!!!! When I see those names listed, who is going to challenge them as RINOs in a Primary, who is going to put up money against those, etc…. then I’ll respect the argument….

As for Post-Election loss to Democrats…. If that occurs…. of course we will hear Victory in Defeat…… Crist will be able to point to those who sat out the Election to blame for the loss while those that sat out the election will revel in that’ll-teach-em and how it was Crist’s/RNC/NRSC/etc fault they let the Democrats have the Senate seat. I see that as a Lose, Lose, Lose…. but that is just IMO.

I know, I know…. “but he’ll be a RINO…..” … he sure will if we push him that direction rather than set a tone to working with him (while respectfully working to defeat him in the Primary and supporting him “IF” he is the General Election candidate.

Again: Crist/Rubio 12 points EXAMINING THE WHOLE RACE not just being anti-Crist because Rubio is a true Conservative and our First Choice – Crist/Rubio 12 points [with links] (since it has some links, I’m not going to try and recreate it all with cut/paste) /// Crist & taxes – Crist and taxes [includes press-links] /// sitting out elections banter – in depth Sit-It-Out discussion /// can one catch RINOvirus? /// working together Post Election, or burnt bridges – standing up about working together /// Deli-story – Deli-story /// ZERO-strategy – ZERO-strategy /// Red-Dogs – Red-Dogs, RINOs, CINOs, DINOs, PLINOs, and Blue-Dogs, oh my… The Political Zoo – what/who are they? /// BLUE-ism – BLUE-ism /// Bi-Partisan – again, Bi-Partisanship has really been Democrats joining with Republicans (here) and here /// Primary McLame – going at McCain in a Primary, finally /// using Primaries to build up future candidates – using Primaries to build up future candidates /// Daily Dimes Dichotomy CONSERVATIVES sending a message to the NRSC – creating an NRSC: Daily Dimes Dichotomy /// How about NO Federal taxation – NO Federal Taxation (States’ Rights)

While appreciating your attempts to thread the needle on this, JLenard,

eburke (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 3:46PM EST (link)

I think this comment may show some subtle, maybe even some unwitting, bias:

*I am more than happy for Rubio to be challenging Crist,*

Actually, since Rubio was in the race first, it would be Crist who is challenging Rubio. (which is yet another of the many areas in which the NSRC’s position on this smells like the odors emanating from a hog farm)

I am more than happy to have Rubio challenging Crist

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 4:18PM EST (link)

it is how (crash/burn-bridges manner) some of my fellow Conservatives are willing to take this AT Crist that bothers me….

As for Rubio being in the Race first, is the first I’m hearing this…. I heard nothing about him until well after the Crist/NRSC attacks (the way I see them, again I think genuine criticism is well in order – just not the tone to where it makes it harder to work together [standing up about working together ] later). That may very well be the case, I am more than willing to take your word for it w/o knowing the filing dates of either/both candidates.

I am more than happy to have Rubio challenging Crist… as I’ve said in so many of the other threads (of which I’ve linked to for those willing to look at the whole overall situation) that if for no other reason as to PUSH Crist and constantly remind him it is CONSERVATISM that is the direction the country is going, what won most of the Election campaigns the last couple of times (many Democrats ran as CINOs/PLINOs/Blue-Dogs), that the GOP (still Conservative) Platform must be fought FOR not against, using Primaries to build up future candidates, etc….. HOPEFULLY he (Rubio) will get the Money, Votes, Momentum, etc… to propel him on to a General Election win…. I’m just being honest about my doubts given FL and the number of ObamaZombies that will still be Walking-Dead in 2010.

Let’s say you get Specter ver 2.0 elected to the Senate in Florida.

How does that help the country? He’s clearly a big government tax and spender. That is the single biggest danger to this country IMHO. Big government socialism.

How does he help us stop that? He’s stood on a stage with Obama and said he thought it was the right thing to do.

How can he possibly help?

This could go either as a reply to you or to V_R so

eburke (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 6:13PM EST (link)

I’ll just post it so that it goes under his :-)

Totally agree V_R. It’s not just that Crist is wrong on 1 or 2 issues, he’s DemLite on some *major* ones where the GOP *must* be able to distinguish themselves from the Dems.

If the GOP Senator from FL is for Porkulus, Cap & Trade, not drilling offshore, TARP, Amnesty, bailouts, and can now have the “read my lips” albatross hung around his neck on taxes, how can we credibly as a party say we’re any different from the Dems in the eyes of the ‘uninformed’ and independents which decide elections.

If Crist gets this seat, we’ll then have to listen ad nauseum and ad infinitum from the GOP powers that be that ‘he’s better than nothing’ until he dies in office. I agree whole-heartedly with you – Crist is the type of Republican who is *worse* than nothing cause the media will always run to him to show how even *Republicans* have issues with those wascally wight-wingers, and will use him to muddy the waters with the electorate as to what Republicans actually stand for.

No thanks!

btw… Rubio is going to be on Sean Hannity’s Radio show.. so you may want to put that on if you aren’t listening already….

I DO NOT demand that people agree with me, just want people to have a full understanding of how I do see some of the overall strategy….

YOU DO NOT demand that I agree with you either…. No need to really as we all agree More Conservatives running are needed, Conservatism is the right direction, the NRSC should butt-out (though I will caveat if no-one is running they step up, but that should be LATE [not early] in the game), Toomey not Ridge, McCain needs a slap upside the head, etc…..

I am all for the full-force of the ObamaFAIL How Obama’s FAILURES are the country’s SUCCESSES – since we have to spell it out message — harshness against the Democrats…. I want challenging, yet respectful tone, against fellow Republicans with an eye toward building Red-Dogs (not driving them away self-fulfilling RINOism prophecy) so we can work together (standing up about working together), etc…..

Take care friends….

I want Erick to keep pressure on the NRSC just don’t like the manner he goes about it as all… I’m just being honest about it rather than parroting things from the Radio. Not saying either/any of you are… but that I know some that are/do. I hope you’ll check it out and see first hand my commitment to focusing Party leadership to Conservatism. Replacing them when/where we can when we return to Power.

where Erick, IMO, is 100% right...

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 3:43PM EST (link)

There remains no compelling reason for the National Republican Senatorial Committee to have endorsed Charlie Crist. None.

Again, I can understand why they may have approached Crist or weighed in with advice if Crist approached them… not sure which way it went…. don’t think anyone does… .but I’m sure it won’t stop some from spinning how they thought it went!

Erick is 100% correct…. and I have always agreed “There remains no compelling reason for the National Republican Senatorial Committee to have endorsed Charlie Crist. None.” They should butt-out of the Primaries where there is more than one candidate and should ONLY interject themselves if time grows late before a Primary and no viable candidate has emerged. Even then, NO OFFICIAL ENDORSEMENT should exist but they may encourage someone to run… They may very well have believed no-one in FL was going to step up, I had yet hear anything about Rubio’s run until AFTER all the Crist talk…..

There was/is simply NO EXCUSE for them to have decided to tout Ridge (and I do not HATE him as some do around here, he was a Bush Red-Dog) when Toomey was/is WELL ESTABLISHED in the State and prepared to make a solid run against disreSpecter even when he was still calling himself a Republican!! He would most likely have beaten him THIS TIME in the Primary and most likely will beat him in the General Election this time.

Each race is examined on its own specifics and merit….

I can/will/do criticize Crist…. I think Erick fully understands how/why I come at this from the angle I do, he just rejects my calls for him to not word things in Democrat Attack Tone…. I won’t have to back-paddle any of my tone/words when the General Election comes in order to support EITHER of them.

RINOism can be a self fulfilling prophecy when you PUSH people away from us Conservatives sounding what will be the Democrat campaign language. I expect him to work with the Conservative Platform and fellow Conservatives.

forgot an important one for those who have not chosen sides

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, May 28th at 2:56PM EST (link)

I will remind those and tell anyone new to this daily conversation that I am the architect of the Daily Dimes Dichotomy – creating an NRSC: Daily Dimes Dichotomy STRATEGY (you’ll see me use the term “strategy” alot, because it is the overall, and then down/in each locale as a separate strategy, deciding/driving factor to me)… That strategy is rooted in MY AGREEMENT with my fellow CONSERVATIVES that the NRSC should butt out of Primaries where a Candidate has already stepped up (like demanding they butt out in PA where Toomey was already established from being disreSpecter’s Primary candidate and almost beating him last time). The creating an NRSC: Daily Dimes Dichotomy strategy is to send them a message to that effect – that WE are not going to support/contribute them until they start getting closer to the GOP (still Conservative) Platform position Candidates. Just so you have the “balance.”
