Interesting Numbers

I wonder what exactly distinguishes a ‘battle death’ from an ‘other death (in theater)?’ If someone is shot in the chest and evacuated to a military hospital where he dies two days later from the gunshot, to which group does he belong?

That would be my guess too, but if it’s true, the Union Civil War numbers are really stunning.

Nearly a soldier and a half died from non-combat related causes for every one that died from injuries sustained on the battlefield? Wow.

which was about fifteen years earlier, the deaths from disease are like four times the number from combat.

Remember this was before antiseptics and antibiotics.

disease and non-battle injuries.

If you die as a result of wounds, whether that day or years from the event, you are a combat death. If you die of disease, a vehicle roll over, etc. you would not be considered as such.

I don’t know the total, but more than one navy and air force aircraft was shot down by the Soviets.

Brought to mind my memories of the “Axe Murder Incident” in Korea in 1976. At the time I was at “Hudson High” and contemplating the possibility of becoming an intel officer. Go here to read about it.

There’s a link to a chapter in Major General John Singlaub’s book is fascinating. I’m sure if such a thing happened today, the Obama administration would issue a statement expressing “strong concern” from the “international community” and then do nothing.
