Charlie Crist Raises Taxes & Now Says He’d Vote for Stimulus — Just Like Specter

Why even have a Republican Party if the Republican Establishment is Just Going to Fund Candidates Whose Positions Are the Same as the Democrats

Bumped for the Hot Seat Poll.

Charlie Crist, Florida’s Governor and the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s chosen candidate for the Senate, has decided to endorse last week signed the Americans for Tax Reform’s “no tax” pledge. This week, Crist will approve the Florida legislature’s new budget, balanced by raising taxes.

If that weren’t bad enough, speaking in South Florida, Charlie Crist said he would have joined Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins to vote in favor of Barack Obama’s stimulus plan.

Crist calls that being practical. He accuses Rubio, of all things, of being too governed by principle. Of course, many people could accuse Crist of having no principles whatsoever.

It is typically assumed that one of the most significant causes for the Republican wipe outs of 2006 and 2008 was because the GOP lost its way. The party of small government and sound fiscal stewardship went hog wild on a spending spree while descending into corruption.

At the same time, there is a competing view that some places just won’t elect conservatives any more. To be honest, both arguments have merit. The problem with the second argument, however, is that if the Republican Party cannot distinguish itself from the Democrats, why have a Republican Party.

Senator John Cornyn, Chairman of the NRSC, has arguable sought to strike a balance. The New York Times noted:

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said he would seek to recruit candidates who he thought could win in Democratic or swing states, even if it meant supporting candidates who might disagree with his own conservative views.

The problem, however, is that Senator Cornyn is not doing what he said. Instead, he is overcompensating. While supporting moderate to liberal candidates like Mark Kirk in Illinois and Mike Castle in Delaware, Cornyn has decided to support candidates who wholly blur the lines between the Democrats and Republicans in states where it is not necessary.

The endorsement of Charlie Crist compounds the problem. At a time every poll shows the Republican brand has suffered a terrible blow and no one can really distinguish it from the Democrats, Charlie Crist has decided to erase the lines altogether.

Perhaps Senator Cornyn should just go out and find Democrats to run since that is the net result of his failed recruiting efforts.

In the meantime, donors to the NRSC should stop donating.

force them to end their practice of getting involved in the primaries….no matter what they tell themselve they do not no better than the electorate! I would like to see all these party groups flushed down the toilet and start anew because we know and the country knows they DO NOT know how to WIN!

should be "they do not know"...its early :-)

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 8:55AM EST (link)

however being a rube out here who does not know anything obviously I just might “not NO better” :-)

Exactly.

The primaries is the time the voters have an opportunity to choose the person they would be willing to support in the general. If the party apparatus tries to rig the primaries, all they’re going to do is screw themselves (and us) in the general.

They involve themselves in the primary then get the base angry to where they do sit home where had they allowed the voters to decide and if their candidate lost they would go to the polls to vote their conscience and vote for the Republican because their guy lost fair and square!

Pyhrric victories

Kyle-MI (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 9:29AM EST (link)

Conservatism just can’t win. At least not in the Senate in 2010. Even if the GOP wins back control we will end up with all these squishes who will vote for Obama’s agenda just like the Dems they ran against. Then when we do have a chance in the future everyone is going to point to these “moderates” who won last time as the way to victory.

Who is to blame

Kyle-MI (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 9:33AM EST (link)

I am not so mad at Crist or the RNSC. Those who are responsible for this debacle are the FL GOP voters. What are they thinking?

You mean by voting Crist in as Gov. in the first place?

Praying (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 9:53AM EST (link)

The election won’t be for a few months. In the meantime, he’s an idiot for having such a clearly asinine platform, and the RNSC is doubly idiotic for endorsing him. Conservatism CAN and MUST win if we have any hope of preventing what happened in Germany in the 1930s from happening in this country. It’s already well on its way. Wake up, America!

The Crist Lesson: Do not vote for Atty Generals

GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 10:28PM EST (link)

Crist was Attorney General here in FL. As AG, there is no need to take any positions on issues, or provide much leadership except for enforcing laws. He had zero history, but looked good on paper. (Wasn’t an AG also the NY Gov?)

The lesson: only vote for folks who have taken sides on political and constitutional issues, not for simple law-and-order people.

And yes, I know it should be Atty’s General, but it just sounds wrong.

Conservatism can't win in the Senate?

mikefisk (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 12:47PM EST (link)

From where I see it, it hasn’t been tried. Or, from the NRSC, even vaguely considered.

Although I still haven’t made my mind up on Rubio (due to not being from Florida and only having heard limited amounts about him), he seems, at the bare minimum, to be a principled individual whom, regardless of your personal opinions of him, is a clear and forceful advocate in what he believes in, and can make his reasoning clear.

Crist, on the other hand, is a stereotypical politician of the first order — calculating, shamelessly pandering, and having more positions than the Kama Sutra (as Dennis Miller once so elegantly summed up John Kerry). I can’t really pin anything down on Crist – he’s not conservative, he’s not liberal, he’s not even particularly moderate – the term “squish” seems uniquely crafted for someone like him.

If somebody like Charlie Crist is the best the GOP can offer the state of Florida, then the party has officially capitulated.

Crist seems to be what they want

Kyle-MI (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 2:02PM EST (link)

It is not just that Crist is the best the GOP can offer. He seems to be what the majority of GOP voters in FL want.

The point about the Senate is that in 2010 we are fighting on lousy ground. Look at where the contested seats are: IL, DE, and FL. In the most purple of these states our best candidate will be a ‘bipartisan’ Obama lapdog. In 2010 it will be nearly impossible for the GOP to regain control of the Senate, it will be very difficult for the GOP to shift any seats, and, even if they do, none of the gains will be from conservative candidates.

Please let's not start with the, "we're fighting an uphill battle as Republicans so we just can't win anyway" meme yet? I've had enough of that over the last 3.5 years...nt

if they are going to keep posting diaries on a daily basis about the subject, needing the other side to compare with…. It is up to each person to determine for themselves what THEY (each individual) deems to be the most effective strategy…..

And handing it to the Democrats concedes far more of the agenda if they maintain Super-Majority. We absolutely will not agree on this it appears… it is about appealing to others… as Erick is doing daily, and I will also do daily then.

I’d still rather Crist stay Governor, but we are obviously past that point. I am dealing with what is…. IMO …. and again, I sure don’t blame Erick for wanting to PUSH/PRESSURE the NRSC… it is NOT as if I really want to be defending and am NOT accept this ONE INSTANCE – and solely as overall strategy….

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, May 21st at 3:39AM EST (link)

It is possible I may be right in the strategy at widdling away Democrat SuperMajority status and closer to returning us to Majority (Senate, potentially tough climb any route – will depend on how deep the ObamaHypnosis is and holds) …. And that Crist may be more RINO than Red-Dog… you insist former, and I still expect later, especially IF the backlash occurs and the direction is easily driven Conservative (we will more easily drive the agenda that way).

again, all IMO….. we just see strategy and how things will shake out differently.

but you may be unwilling to even concede the ‘both can prove correct’ – mixed bag win.

Dumb politics

MAGUY Wednesday, May 20th at 10:14AM EST (link)

Anybody paying attention can see that a pretty sizable anti-government wave is building for the 2010 election. The tea parties, growing opposition to the stimulus/bailout packages, and the votes in California yesterday are clear signs of this. And so what does Crist do? stake himself out as a big government spending bureaucrat. If Crist keeps campaigning like this I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rubio give him a strong primary fight which will weaken both of them and give the Dems a potential pickup. And the NRSC will have itself to blame.

Masochistic NRSC

They have been shooting themselves in the foot for so long that it looks as though they like it too much to stop. And, like knee-jerk liberals feeding a junkie’s habit, Republican donors keep on giving the NRSC the money to keep on shooting themselves in the foot with. How dumb is that?

At the same time, there is a competing view that some places just won’t elect conservatives any more.

The above is unquantifiable since the party decided 20 years ago that conservatives and conservatism can’t win in New England and the west coast so it stopped trying to persuade anyone to the rightness of fiscal, libertarian and social conservativism and stopped trying to sell the philosophy. over that time they’ve run fiscal and social liberals for office in theose regions and have made such a smashing success of it that there is now not one single Republican holding office in those regions.

Not content with destroying the party in the NE and the left coast…they’ve nationalized their strategy in 1992, 1996, 2006 and 2008 and having failed to elect anyone in any of those cycles instead of acknowledging the obvious and letting the adults drive the bus so we can win again…they stand up and declare we haven’t done enough of it and demand we do it again in 2010 across the board in Congressional and Senate elections.

Been there, done that

TashaTchin Thursday, May 21st at 5:05PM EST (link)

The Republican Party is insane by Einstein’s definition — doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result. The Republican Party establishment backed Arlen Specter with scarce Party money in his last primary over a well-liked conservative opponent with the belief that conservatives just can’t win. Talk about your self-fulfilling prophecies! And, just how well did that work out for the all knowing Republican establishment? Specter continued to vote against conservative principles, preferring to pontificate and then vote with the liberals. Now, knowing that even with Republican establishment backing he would go down in defeat in his next primary, the bastian of Rockefeller Republicanism jumped ship and joined with the Democrats. Anyone want to donate their hard-earned dollars for more insanity?

Just look at what these squishy-type Republicans did to Reagan Country, my beloved California. The anti-conservatives handed the Golden State over to the libs without even a fight! After us grass-root types fought long and hard to give the GOP a majority in the Assembly in the last decade, the so-called Republicans elected a Democrat as the Speaker of the Assembly! How’s that for a big “thank” you? Then, in the spirit of bi-partisanship, they deregulated energy in the state and handed us rolling blackouts and sky-rocketing rate increases. They followed up by ceding the majority of legislative seats to the Dems during the re-districting following the 2000 census. Oh, the few Republicans that remained had safe little feifdoms to run in, but they gave the Dems safe little feifdoms, too, and more of them. Bravo, boys! The Party kept pushing their favorite faux-Republicans and kept on losing all of the state-wide offices in California. Then, when fed up California voters decided to recall and replace the useless Democrat governor, Gray Davis, AKA Governor Gumby, in a citizen-led recall attempt, the Party operatives fought us tooth-and claw. When it became obvious to everyone but the Los Angeles Times that Governor Gumby was going to be recalled and replaced did the Republican Party back a conservative to replace the dimwitted Dem? NOOOO! They backed Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger for the job. Arnold, another useless faux-Republican promised to balance our budget, cut taxes and reform government. He didn’t. But, the Republican establishment backed him for another term of bi-partisan bankrupting of the state. Here in California, thanks to a citizens’ initiative, the governor has the line-item veto. Has Herr Schwarzenegger used it to reign in excessive Democrat spending? NOOO! But, he did sign a $54 BILLION tax increase this year and pushed for an additional $16 BILLION in taxes with $1 million in Republican Party money for the initiatives we just defeated. How’s that for using Republican donor dollars?

The same folks who destroyed Reagan Country and bankrupted the Golden State now want to do the same to the Sunshine State. Einstein is right. The Republican Party is insane and everyone who donates to the Party instead of individual candidates is bonkers, too, and shouldn’t be allowed to vote!

“Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.”

Some background on Rubio

GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 10:43PM EST (link)

Rubio, like Sen Martinez, is of Cuban heritage. A good conservative friend of mine is of Cuban descent. Family left Cuba just as the fan got dirty. It is amazing that most Cubans left for Puerto Rico (his parents and siblings) or for Venezuela (his uncles/aunts), where they are getting Castro Part Two now, and leaving again. The Rubio family in Cuba was known as a very conservative family, very religious and a strong stance against communism/socialist and very much for strong family values. So I guess they’d be considered right-wing terrorists by DHS. Conservative Cubans have no use for Sen. Martinez, and same goes for me.

Also, when talking about GOP winning, remember this: Obama may have won Indiana and North Carolina, but in both states, more people voted against him than for him. In MN Senate election, more people voted against Franken than for Franken. (I think Chambless in GA was another case of this.) Third party votes gave Dems victories.

NRSC stay out of Contested Primaries poll - I said YES

A. however, many seen FL as NO CONTESTANTS when they stepped in to prop-up Crist – who may very well have decided to run on his own….

B. Now, if we change the point to – Is FL now a Contested Primary? If Rubio is definitely saying he is making a serious run or is this still all Trial-Balloon?!?!? If this is indeed now a contested Primary… I STILL SAY YES – They should butt out…..

C. Given B…. the whole point is that it wouldn’t much matter as one of the whole points (Crist/Rubio discussion [multiple sub-links]) was/is that Crist has a war-chest and the NRSC can/could (and should) focus on OTHER races that need funding…. If true, that advantages Crist (in that one point) either way – if NRSC is IN OR OUT!
