The 22nd amendment restricts Presidents to two terms in office.
If Republicans had ever introduced legislation to repeal the 22nd Amendment, the media and the Democrats would go absolutely nuts. Even without repealing it, many of the online left predicted George Bush would never surrender power to Barack Obama.
And yet, a proposed amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment has been introduced into Congress. It’s just that it was done so by a Democrat, Jose Serrano.
Consider this an open thread.

nickinvirginia Thursday, April 9th at 2:14PM EST (link)They didn’t like term limits because they beleived that lame-ducks would lose the ambition to make good policy. The 22nd Amendment, like a lot of Congressional action, was reactionary (FDR), but short-sighted. Presidents followed the 2 term precedent for almost 200 years before it. It wasn’t necessary.

Other than the Constitution,
Steph C (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 2:20PM EST (link)which we’ve already lost in all but name, can anybody give me one good reason to keep a federal government?
I’m serious. Think about it very hard after the knee jerk reaction. Believe me, I gave myself one just at the thought. I’m not saying that we should but in its present form:
*It’s not going to keep us safe.
*It’s not doing anything to keep us strong economically.
*It’s not doing much of anything but sucking the life out of the country’s people.
Once you’ve thought about it, really thought about it, then we’ll know the right path to turn this country around. Otherwise all we’re doing is spinning wheels in the dustbin of history and going through the motions of “doing something.”

Cheetah772 (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 2:28PM EST (link)The last thing I want to see is my beloved country turning into a Third World country full of barbarians killing each other like wild animals. Thanks, but no thanks.
But give me Sarah Palin, then I’ll vote for her in 2012 and kick Obama out of White House. That will do it for me!
Otherwise, I’m sticking with rooting for Packers, it’s just so much easier and causes less headaches for me. Hehe….
Daniel 2:20 And he [God] changeth the times and seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.
Did I say I wanted a civil war?
Steph C (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 3:56PM EST (link)Besides which, you said:
What makes you think we’re not already going in that direction? Thugs on the streets have more rights than law abiding citizens. Gangs, illegal drugs, and illegal guns. If you want to keep going in that direction, fine.
What I was asking is basically, what would it take to get this country on the right path? Most of us here, love the Constitution (there are a few trolls or mobies who would just as soon rewrite it), but what we have now in the federal government is as far removed from that document as it’s possible to be.
How do we leave anybody who is a part of Washington now and get the country back to where we need it to be to remain a free and prosperous nation?

Slightly_Askew (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 4:37PM EST (link)Seriously, though, I’ve gone through this mental exercise and it’s a good one. Imagine absolutely no federal government, play through the hypothetical next ten years and see what fails. Whatever does not, we don’t need the federal government doing it today.
ONDCP, HHS, HUD, Agriculture, Education would all go in the first year.
I’m up in the air about Homeland Security, as inter-agency communications is good, but other aspects are a bit overarching for my taste.

Steph C (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 6:01PM EST (link)When he was campaigning he said Washington is broken. When you look at all the broken parts how do you figure out what works and what doesn’t when everything seems to be covered in broken parts.
We seem to be spending a lot of time talking about a “landscape” that is so full of wants that it’s hard to see what is important. So, maybe it’s time to throw out all the wants, clear the landscape, if you will, and concentrate on needs first.

I'm neutral on Presidential term limits
Neil Stevens (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 3:11PM EST (link)I’m fine with leaving them or repealing them. The Presidency has so much individual power, and it takes such a mass movement to sway a Presidential election, that I can buy the argument that extra controls are needed.
What I oppose are legislative term limits. If House members are growing to unaccountable we need to reduce the sizes of their constituencies, adding members as needed.
If Senators are growing unaccountable, repeal the 17th.

Answer: The Americans who voted for this president were largely un- or misinformed. But we knew that already.
Really, I oppose the 22nd Amendment anyway.
drohan00 (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 3:56PM EST (link)I understand the importance of the precedent for two terms in office for the President. But I also know that the American president is easy to sandbag in the second term. Congress and the leaders of other countries would know they might be dealing with the President for longer. There would be no waiting him out. More things would get done. Maybe we don’t like that idea now because we are out of power, but there will be another Reagan like character in the conservative movement, and we will want him/her to be in office for twelve to sixteen years as well.
Can we change it to one term? NT
