Who Carried Water for Chris Dodd?

After twenty-four hours of denials, Senator Chris Dodd is admitting that he added a provision to the stimulus package to protect the bonuses AIG intended to pay executives.

Dodd, you will recall, is the single largest recipient of AIG employees’ campaign funds in the United States Congress.

Here’s the thing though: the amendment had to be added before it went into conference with the House. Senator Dodd was not one of the Senate representatives in the conference.

Inside Conference, the participants go over all the amendments. They have to in order to make sure the House version and Senate version are identical. Someone had to do Chris Dodd’s bidding in the Conference Committee.

Who was it?

The Senate representatives were Senators Reid, Inouye, and Baucus. Which of them worked with Senator Dodd to make sure AIG was protected?

If I understand Dodd correctly, that water may have been carried for Obama, too.

True, but voters are focused on the bonuses

The_Gadfly (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 11:36AM EST (link)

not porkulous. They understand the bonuses-those numbers are small enough to understand, as are the misdeeds behind them. Porkulous is still incomprehensible to them. It’s one of those things all congress-critters do. So keep them focused on who enabled the bonuses – none of the Democratic leaders can escape responsibility for that. Either they conspired to help pass it, or they showed gross negligence in allowing it to be passed without their knowing about it. The voters are more than upset about this, and they intend to hold somebody responsible for it, and once they know who it is, they fully intend to make an example of that somebody so it never happens again.

Somebody will do it again anyway, but until their wrath has run its course, you don’t want to be in front of them, or even trying to divert their attention from it.

The difference between ignorance and apathy...

I don’t know and I don’t care. Which is worse? That they ignorantly voted on the mechanism for the bonuses, or that they are deliberately lying about it. Either way, my schadenfreude abounds.

This is a perfect example of why you guys will never help win back the millions of Republicans who have left the Party.

1st– what’s with having the source of your information to be the exact same blog post in which you state your claim?

2nd– after I dug around (wasting my time to try to follow-up on whatever I was trying to “learn” on this site), I finally found a reference to what Chris Dodd has admitted to. Guess what? It’s not:

“Senator Chris Dodd is admitting that he added a provision to the stimulus package to protect the bonuses AIG intended to pay executives.”

It’s:
“Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., acknowledged that his staff agreed to dilute the executive pay provision that would have applied retroactively to recipients of federal aid. However, Dodd said he was not aware of any American International Group Inc. bonuses at the time the change was made.”

Criticize him for waffling for for trying to BS us, but when you try stretching the truth like this, you just lose credibility among those who’d like to believe in Republicans and the conservative movement again.

mainlandj: You ignorant ...

Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 9:39AM EST (link)

Do you know how poll taxes worked? They were for all intents and purposes racially neutral, but the “taxes” were carefully calculated to be just high enough in high minority (high poverty) population areas to make the majority black electorate have to choose between voting and eating for the next few days.

In other words, you dumb parsing dumbass, Chris Dodd here admits he deliberately inserted language into the TARP bill to strip out language that would have prevented bonuses from being paid to executives of failed companies being propped up by taxpayer dollars. Like the poll tax, he need not have mentioned AIG in particular, but it and companies like it, were very clearly the beneficiaries.

In other words, after this display of partisan hackery, it’s not Erick (or Redstate) that needs to be worried about losing credibility. You, I don’t really care about. Dodd, however …

I agree that

Mainlandj does make a good point in that we as conservatives need to start doing something to “help win back the millions of Republicans who have left the Party.” We can’t win national elections without a concentrated effort made to win these voters back.

While I certainly disagree with those Republicans who for whatever reason supported the Democrats in 2008, the reality is that millions did. We should make sure this never happens again.
