I don’t want the head of the RNC voicing nuanced views of what are very strait forward issues. Conservatives choose life. Period. If individual candidates need to present a more nuanced view of this crucial issue in the context of a campaign in a difficult district, that’s somewhat more palatable (though still hard to swallow). Steele’s not running for anything now and the only people he needs to convince at this point is the base, so why does he even bother with this claptrap? He’s not a true Conservative, he’s not a good administrator and at this point he’s a walking disaster from the PR standpoint. I think he’s got to go.

First I think you nailed it with the personal thing….I was just making that point in another thread as well.

Also I agree that to call for his ouster now is destructive, but he had better get his head on straight because the fund raising numbers are going to effect his status for better or for worse.

You should really read the whole article though…very revealing.

The questions were kind of odd I guess I found myself not really caring what Steele thought about some of the topics covered. He seems to be talking on a personal level more than as a party chairman which is a little dicey. I’m personally ok with it, but I think he does need to be more mindful that he’s representing the office whether he likes it or not.

Why he is subjecting himself to liberal/poor quality media I don’t know (GQ?!?), he must see it as an interesting challenge. He does much better than McCain in a hostile environment, but that’s not saying anything, I know! Even if Steele makes some mistakes I think we should give him some time to learn from them before calling for his head. Just my opinion.

I think we’re giving him WAY too much credit here. I think in 2010 and 2012 we’ll be marketing our candidates instead of Michael Steele.
As long as the GOP is recruiting actual conservatives to run from here on out, then Michael Steele or whoever heads the RNC doesn’t really matter. If, however, they decide to recruit “Democrat-lite” candidates in both elections, then we’re screwed.
And if we get to that point, I’m a registered independent.

I agree with the principles Rush espoused at CPAC. I suppose as head of the RNC you need to be careful what you say. I have never heard Steele say ANYTHING contrary to life, liberty and the rule of law and he’s never even hinted at supporting larger federal government. Those are the must-haves. There are much more controversial issues which he perhaps is unwisely speculating on, maybe he should just stay quiet on those, but that’s not his nature.

I find it refreshing he’s willing to discuss the more controversial issues, maybe it’s a political mistake, I don’t know. I like his personality and style even if I don’t agree with him 100% on everthing. Politics is about compromise. There is never going to be a perfect candidate or spokesperson. I wish folks would stop nitpicking everything he says, he talks so much there are bound to be a few boo-boos that should be forgiven, not attacked.

If I am not mistaken, I believe you also supported Snowe, Collins and Specter because “they vote with the Republicans some of the time.” It’s particularly interesting where you say “Conservative Principles, whatever they are.” If you don’t know what principles are Conservative, you are doing nothing more here than promoting a wider split in the Republican Party, and I see you as nothing more than an operative with spliting as your main goal.

Have you ever heard of Life, Liberty, Property, and the Rule of Law? Life is the most core principle over all else, as without life, nothing else matters or exists. If you and Steele choose to promote abortion, there is a big tent to the left of ours that will welcome you with open arms, and I say good riddance. The Republican Party needs to understand that looking to gain every vote, and to pander to every wish and whim, will continue to erode the party, and keep it in the wilderness, where in that case is where it belongs.

what “message” were we supposed to have gotten from ’06 that actually supports your point? You want to know why Republicans lost in ’06? Because they spent their time in the majority NOT ACTING LIKE REPUBLICANS.

When Republicans ACT like Republicans, we win. We won with Reagan. We won under Gingrich’s Contract with America. We lost ’08 because we failed to act like Conservatives. Our nominee wasn’t a conservative.

Know what’s worse than sticking to principles that MIGHT be unpopular for some people? Abandoning those principles like a rat when it looks like the going may get tough.

He is providing an excellent opportunity for more friendly fire inside the party, which may lead to a party split between the right wing republicans and the moderates. And the net result will be election wins for the Democratic Party.

So go for it RedStaters! Rip him apart! You want a party with only the true believers and litmus tests? And you want to lose lots of elections? You’re pushing in the right direction then. I guess a couple more cycles in the minority might wake you up, but if the message hasn’t gotten through from ’06 and ’08 yet… well maybe you’re just not listening.

The man likes to talk, is that a crime? So every little thing he says might not always sound perfectly supportive of “true conservative principles” whatever those are. So what. He’s got the basic program down pat and that’s good enough. His big tent philosophy makes sense. You can purge all you want, you’re just shooting yourselves in the foot.

Instead of criticizing Steele, why don’t you actually listen to his criticisms of the party? I think they are valid and should be taken seriously. JC Watts is another excellent example of someone who has pointed out the party’s failure to reach out to a more diverse constituency. These guys aren’t lying, it’s a real problem. Listen to the message instead of attacking the messenger!

It appears the main reasons the MSM want Steele on TV is that he is a mealymouthed Republican doing damage to our brand every time he speaks. I was a big supporter of him becoming head of the RNC and now I am frosted. I was wrong.

Steele talks in circles trying to have it all ways. STFU is right.

That’s what this is really about. All it takes is about a minute and a half of Steele talking and you figure out he tries to put big words in small places a lot. The guy ain’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but we decided to be cool like the Democrats. Sometimes, we go way past the stupid party and well into the idiot party.
