Running Against Jim Bunning

Let’s presume just for the sake of argument that Jim Bunning needs to retire. Let’s just presume that. He hasn’t raised much money. He barely won re-election six years ago. He’s got foot in mouth disease. Let’s presume he needs to go.

We should not then presume to make the mistake that David Williams is the answer.

State Senate President David Williams (R) met last week with National Republican Senatorial Committee officials about a 2010 Senate bid, in the most public sign yet that GOP leaders could be looking for someone other than Sen. Jim Bunning (R) to carry the party banner next year.

As Kentucky’s Club For Growth chapter notes, David Williams’ candidacy should be dead on arrival.

Williams supported one of the largest tax increases in Kentucky history after claiming he’d hold the line on taxes. He is, in effect, a Kentucky version of George H. W. Bush and his “read my lips” pledge.

If Kentucky wants to replace Jim Bunning, that’s fine. But we should hope they don’t replace the conservative stalwart with someone more squishy than Mitch McConnell.

Dem-lite is no way to run.

How many can run in a primary...

Can we find a good candidate out of the State Senate or House, or even a good staffer that we could promote?

Is there a way to rate the Kentucky Republicans in the State ouse and Senate with an ACU like system?

I am sure we could find a conservative who could be open to advancement.

I let Bunning cut in line at Reagan a couple weeks ago

He was trying to make his flight and although we exchanged some small talk, I’ve never noticed him more exhausted and defeated.

I think Bunning is a nice man. However, Kentucky and Republicans need a whole lot more than “nice” these days.

Trey Grayson

I’ve mentioned this before, but the candidate is clearly Trey Grayson.
He is currently the Secretary of State, which means he is known by voters statewide( they have elected him twice), farmore than a state senator who only represents 1/38th of kentucky.
He is a proven vote getter, by the mere fact that he won somewhat comfortably in 2007 while th incumbent GOP Governor was going down by 17 points.
Another big advantage is his age. He is not yet 40, so if we get him in now, it might make for 30 years of sfae re-elections.
