The new White House website is up. It’s actually not bad.
Of course, the new administration just couldn’t do it gracefully. They had to get in a few digs, like this one:
President Obama will keep the broken promises made by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He and Vice President Biden will take steps to ensure that the federal government will never again allow such catastrophic failures in emergency planning and response to occur.
I guess it’s fitting their party symbol is the jackass.

That peaceful transfer of power thing? I don’t think it would have happened if McCain had won. We have met the enemy, and the enemy is us. Sad, we have become truly a nation divided…
No!!!11!1!!1!1! The Bilderbergers are coming
Naw, it would've been the same with McCain.

Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, January 20th at 5:35PM EST (link)I observed an Obama interview a week or two ago. In it, he was asked about his ability to be a “uniter, not a divider.” His answer was as could be expected, except he interjected a comment about “reversing the failed Bush policies.” I thought the choice of words was a strange way to “unite” his audience.
I have no idea what followed–I turned the radio off.

Obama betrayed me on FISA and I voted for him anyway. Tuesday, January 20th at 5:41PM EST (link)The front page of this website makes me cringe. At least Bush earned the disgust of 73% of Americans; not only are your grapes sour, but your vision of America today as still divided shows your dead-end, invalid view.
Good luck with that sulking thing! I doubt you even have the courage to post this: I expect to be banned for this comment anyway. I dare you to leave it up as if there WERE righteousness (as opposed to SELF-righteousness, mind you) in the shriveled little raisins you call your souls.
I like the abjuration under the comment window: “Be respectful, or be banned.” Well, The Bush admin. sure didn’t respect its constituency or the Constitution, and look, they were banned!

Next under the bus: Posse Comitatus
civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, January 20th at 7:55PM EST (link)I mean if the Obama Administration plans that the Federal government is going to run emergency responses, then it doesn’t need to respect the state and local officials or even bother to ask their permission before sending in federal forces.
Of course if Mr. Bush had done that in the face of opposition from the Democratic governor of Louisiana, he would have been called a fascist and a dictator and have been impeached on the spot for breaking federal law.
But now that we have a Democrat in charge, I guess it’s perfectly fine for the Federal government to invade states whenever they declare an emergency.
Nothing must stand in the way of demonizing the Bush administration. It’s a small man who tries to raise his esteem by stepping on his predecessor after he’s taken charge. All Obama does is demean the office he holds.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Are you serious?
johnpurdue (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 1:07PM EST (link)If the Bush Administration had, from day one, sent FEMA into New Orleans, provided people with an orderly means of escape (which the Democratic State Administration could not do), given them water and food and a safe place to stay afterward, and trailers that were not toxic holes, you believe the country would have made the administration out to be a federal predator?
If I were to pinpoint the beginning of the end for the GOP majority it would be the day Katrina struck and Bush did nothing. We have to rebuild with that low point in mind.
If Bush had been a true Texan and not the Connecticut rich kid he turned out to be, he would have charged into Louisiana and Alabama guns blazing, helping the people and setting things right.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to argue that we are all for limited government on this board, but for what small government we have let’s make it rock solid and moving with watch-like precision.
For somebody claiming to be a Republican,
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 1:14PM EST (link)you sure have Democrat talking points down. You, like Democrats everywhere, don’t have a clue what FEMA does. It has no 1st Responders other than some Crisis Management Team liasons. It doesn’t charge in anywhere, it comes in after the responders and acts as a government ATM.

Posse Comitatus is a pet peeve of mine!
From ME to You (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 2:15PM EST (link)It hit home when authorities were looking for people to search for a missing child.
They approached the base commander and he agreed ‘sort of’ ! He couldn;t order anyone because that would have been a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act. Instead, he announced a ‘volunteer opportunity’ to assist the local community! He then ‘permitted’ any of the volunteers to use any equipment (radios, batteries, et.al.) they thought necessary in support of their volunteering!
(n.b. the child was found safe and sound and just a little worse for the wear!)
We had this discussion a while back!
From ME to You (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 1:45PM EST (link)The POTUS cannotsend troops into a state without the governor’s permission unless it is to quell an “insurrection”. It’s called Posse Comitatus.
Had Governor Blanco or Mayor Nagin requested federal assistance the President would have had the authority to dispatch military units to assist. Until they did so the President would be invading a sovereign state.
The city of New Orleans government and the Louisiana State Government were contacted by the federal government before Katrina hit and both the city and state government stated that assistance was not needed.
The president assumed that Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco knew what they were they were doing and that they believed the resources they had on hand were adequate. Obviously they were mistaken. Had the Governor’s office not delayed in responding to later offers of help the situation would probably not have deteriorated as much, however that is speculation.
Had the president done that he would have been breaking the law! Remember Posse Comitatus??
Your error is that you think of the United States as a single large entity. It is not, it is a union of 50 soveriegn states who have given a centralized government limited powers to engage in activities on their behalf with entities outside “the Union”. At least that is what it started out to be.
The “limited powers” of the central government have been steadily added to so that if the founding fathers looked at our current situation they would see that our federal government now has more power than King George had!!

The part of the post regarding NOLA is stinging to say the least. However, the most awful part of that post is it is correct.
What you leave out, Erick, is that the same post also acclaims Bush’s leadership after 9/11.
Can we please quit with the “ungracious democrats” posts and lets us focus on getting our party together. Lets get some interviews with state and national GOP congressional hopefuls. Lets get Mitch McConnel on here to discuss how we can help him do a better job. Lets get some of our better politician’s statements up here regarding where the GOP is heading.
Either we start preparing for the future and a renewed majority right now or we sit here and nitpick an opposing party that is 100% better than us at nitpicking themselves.
