IMO, retribution for deeds of the past isn't the most important ongoing outcome of the overthrow of Saddam. What success in Iraq offers, and looks like is very attainable (at least pre 01/20/09), is a self-sustaining drain on Islamic extremists.

Pre Bush/Cheney, where could a young Middle Easterner go to better himself?
Afghanistan does not have anywhere near a sufficiently educated population to be that beacon. Iraq does.

Now, I don't expect Iraq to be our BFF. I do expect the economy of Iraq to bear some semblance of a bottom-up economy that acts more or less in the interests of its own people.

When you have no opportunity, as is the case for mostly all Middle Easterners, all you have is anger. And while there will be some barriers for those outside of Iraq to join in the opportunity that is opening there, people everywhere have demonstrated that those barriers can be overcome, given sufficient desire and some way to express or achieve that desire.

...and in better health. It's a shame he couldn't be our next president. There's no one I'd trust more with his finger on the trigger. Except maybe on a huntin' trip!

The VP debate -- Cheney vs Lieberman?

I came away from hearing that thinking, man, why doesn't this guy run for President -- he is awesome! His calm manner, intelligence, and keen wit shown through. I can well imagine the confidence that the President places in him, and the voice of reason and wise council that he provides.

Thanks for this further insight, Erick. What a great experience!

And you got be up close and personal, even if for only a too short time.
To sit down with someone our kids are taught to hate and blame, but we reprogram them daily and faithfully to teach them that in spite of what they may be told, people like President Bush and Vice President Cheney kept most of us alive during a time when war was specifically against civillians rather than nations.
Sorry, tired and maybe not making much sense, but you made my day E.
Now practice telling your future grandkids!

I think in coming years we will see the value of Mr, Cheney's contribution not only to America post 9-11, but also to America through out his political career.
He has allways been the comfort in the silence of the background with this administraton.
You could not hear him or see him, you just felt better because you knew he was there.
I believe Mr Cheney puts God first, America second, and party third.
I kinda like that.
As far as I know, he has never gone after self glorification.
He has withstood the negative statements about him, but unlike Bush, has defended himself against them.
He has never stuck his finger out the window to see how to act or think.
He allways seamed to do what was right for America, as to what was right for himself.
I don't recall him backing down from a fight with his foes.
I think he has a Patton attitude when it comes to standing firm.

No people, I have not come to bury him, but to praise him.

Hes gonna be missed more than we know.

And all to soon forgotten.

I guesse if you think of a present day Patriot,
he does comes to mind.

We forget how we were not attacked again. We forget that as a whole, our interests were not attacked outside of Iraq and the middle east after 9-11. Our country, and our psyche, forgets what 9-11 was, and what it did to this country.

We dont realize that those attacks had a preliminary wave of effects on our economy, which, started our efforts in Iraq, etc, but now that we are in a global recession with all that is going on, we continue to fight off what those people want; complete destruction of us and our allies.

We forget very quickly what all this has done, how it has impacted other things, and people like GWB and DC protected ALL of us. ALL AMERICANS were protected under them. And the hate that is directed towards them is very sad to me.

Thanks, Erick, for a great read. Keep it up!!

I have no experience that could possibly compare to this. What little experience I have is once shaking the hand to the undersecretary of the Air Force The Honorable Mr Aldridge. That was humbling by itself, and this is magnitudes higher.

When it comes to the war on Terror, I will always be thankful for these men occupying the White House. The have done things the American public have no clue about to save us from a horrible fate at the hands of terrorists, but they stopped them cold. I will always be grateful for Mr. Cheney and the men who worked with him.
