(ht: Dan Spencer)

The NYT reports today that Burris was not the first one who was offered Obama's senatorial seat. Apparently, U.S. Rep Danny Davis (D) was offered the spot first. Here's Davis's take on it:

“Given all the revelations and all the controversy, I would not be able to take it from the governor,” Mr. Davis, who has represented a Chicago district in Congress since 1996, said in an interview. “I felt that if I was to take the appointment, I would spend so much of my time deflecting and defending the position that it would take away my real reason for being involved in politics and political life — to find solutions to problems.”

That is an intelligent response to Blago's stupidity. Burris's response? Not intelligent.

First, let me say I am not here to provide a defense for Burris. He is a Chicago politician from most appearances part of the “machine.” He also has obvious delusions of grandeur; but politicians who do not are few and far between. Burris has also had a fairly auspicious career and appears to have gained the respect of many that worked with him. Save the obvious racist comments he made during the Illinois Democratic primary in 2002, Burris appear to be fairly “clean” of the usual Chicago political accoutrements; in fact he probably runs in better circles than Obama.

So why is he an idiot? Is it time for us to agree with Harry Reid and the Democrat Caucus? Why do Republican’s even have a comment on this other then it is sad abandonment of democratic principles and evidence for how “change” will be accomplished.

The facts are that Blago is the governor, is fulfilling his obligation under the law and sans his removal or impeachment can not be stopped. With the specter of impeachment roadblocks, legal maneuvers and precedents such as Powell v. McCormack I expect this will go on for awhile, especially since “Fitz” is in no mood to deal.

Us? We should neither condone, nor cast verbal stones at the actors. What we are missing is an opportunity to display differences between the corrupt practices, back room dealings, history and misguided policies of a new administration our public hardly knows and basic conservative ideals which are far removed from this cesspool of corruption. Instead of painting a better picture for the future we get obscured in the fallacious characterizations from which we need to part by taking a role in the political cannibalism. I say let them devour each other while we distantly prepare for a future build on their misdeeds.

Blago picked the one guy who probably said yes after calling 50 people. Anyone in their right mind would not take this seat. But a black 71 year old career politician with nothing to lose is the perfect choice.
He will vote along party lines and be shunned by most if not all the Senators. No one will want to associate with the "Blago pick". I cannot wait until Burris gets his 15 minutes of fame on the Senate floor and then makes himself into an idiot. Blago will be watching from his cell and Obama from the Oval office. What strange times we live in.

Facts: Blago is the duly elected and sworn-in Guv of IL. The Guv of IL has the constitutional right and duty to appoint someone to a Senate vacancy. The US Constitution doesn't allow the Senate the power to say "but we don't like who appointed you" and send home an appointee. Even if the Blago is impeached tomorrow, the IL legislature can't retroactively un-appoint Burris.

And 99 white dudes trying to keep one black guy out of the Senate ain't gonna play well. More words like "lynch" will be forthcoming.

So everyone can spin and bluster; lawsuits may be filed; and Harry Reid's head may explode (as if), but at the end of the day, Burris has a new job. The rest is just noise.

Amusing noise, but noise nonetheless.

LA or IL...I can't figure that one out, but it looks like IL may be pulling ahead to win the most corrupt award.

This story is by far the greatest gift I could receive as 2008 ends!

The events leading up to it may be pretty pathetic, but the outline in its entirety...

Governor, after two year investigation is found to have been not just "selling" local political seats around his state, but trying to "sell" recently vacated Senator seat.

The open seat being that of President-elect Obama. Some of his staff members had been involved with "helping" the Governor fill that seat.

So the gov refuses to step down...his state legislator decides to not hold a special election, so he appoints someone.

This someone is old as dirt, can barely speak in a manner that can be understood as English.

He had been elected to other political seats...but not for the last 18 years...and of something like 9 runs for different offices he is elected 2, maybe 3 times?

And by-golly, no one wants to go on record as rejecting the ONLY black person (magic negro?) that will sit in the Senate...so you know it's not a race thing or anything, but we can't say no cause he's black.

I am sorry but this is some funny STUFF! I hope the idiot goes to Washington...if nothing else he should provide comic relief to the sadness that is likely to unfold before us.

If Republicans can manage to stay out of this, the identity politics cannabalism will be one for the ages. There is absolutely no up side for the Dems, regardless of what they do or how they handle the situation.

I wish someone as cold and calculating as Blago were on our side - trapping the Dems in their own cesspool is so easy, a felon can do it.

Chicago is way more politically backwards than even New York. EVERYTHING goes through Daley. "The new Daley machine is much more sophisticated than his father's...He's the boss and the master spinner."[1] Even little building projects have to be approved by him [2]. He owns this city and every Democrat in it.

I'd strongly recommend that Republicans stay silent on this subject & let the Democrats own this stage.

What you can say about Burris is he is like the other Democrats. All of them have ahuge disconnect with the real world.

Yeah, Burris is something of a perennial candidate. Not very bright and not a leader in any sense of the word.

But, he IS from Crook County, so who ever is put up before them they will all shake their heads yes to like the nice mind-numbed, idiots they are in Crook County.

All it takes is the name on the ballot with a D next to it and... uh,yup,uh,yup,uh,yup... the stupid voters will love him if they are asked to vote and blindly allow him if he is appointed.

I have yet to hear ANY talking head, current pol or past pol refer to the man as an idiot....in fact, I have yet to hear anything nasty said about him...

He's a career pol....how can anyone be that shocked that someone would take the appointment?

This guy is the Joe Biden of Illinois. The only way he can get into office, after running for it numerous times, is on the coattails of someone else with a political need for his demographics. Expect him to fade away once he's seated in the Senate.

Like Joe Biden.

Rather, I'm all for playing the spoiler and throwing fuel on the fire.

We should be thankful that Blago' appointed a 71 year old to the last two years of Obama's senate seat. Sure there's a chance Burris might win re-election, but that's betting against his remarkable track record of repeated losses within Chicago's thugocracy, where it's plain as day that Burris' biggest imperfection is that he didn't play "the game" well enough. Had he possessed those skills, perhaps he could have been the first black man out of Illinois to be elected president.

Wait. That just happened to another "claimed" black man.

The better political move in IL and NY is to encourage these appointments.

Bring back Operation Chaos!

If we cannot have a crack at these seats via a special election, might as well fan the flames by having the new majority party turn on itself, giving the RNC, IL and NY parties time to recruit and mount winnable senate seats there in 2010.

Is it really that hard to imagine watching '10 returns and seeing Senator-elect Mike Ditka and Senator-elect Rudy Giuliani?

In the meantime, Senate-majority leader Mitch McConnell should release an internal memo/email to his counterparts telling them they will be present to welcome IL Senator Burris as he is sworn in.

Heck, he should throw out a formal invite to PEOTUS Obama too. It is his former senate seat after all.

he didn't anticipate the reaction that his "appointment" has generated. Even my somewhat-politically-unaware wife, when I told her that Blago had made that appointment, stood with her mouth agape at the news. Blago has stones the size of Texas for doing it, and Burris apparently possesses naivete that's the same size.

Or he's an idiot.

Burris an idiot is right...

He probably took the seat because he sees the appointment as legit.

Did he play the race card?...I say no, Blago did, and so did Bobby Rush..and I bet it was part of the master plan.

Maybe you saw something this morning that makes him worthy to be called an idiot.....I saw nothing yesterday from RB to justify that
