And, frankly, I’d love to be proven wrong about some things about her, but I don’t believe I will. That said, as BHO has shown us, it is pretty easy to have a totally contrived persona when that persona is what people want to see.

Alberta (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 12:36PM EST (link)With you Palin diary, I believe you were calling Palin an empty suit, no?
I first saw Palin on the Kudlow show months before she was nominated, and she was talking about energy and was saying all the right things, drill baby drill ect. so she seemed alright. I have no clue as to her positions on any other issues are, and she was on a presidential ticket!
Also, if you were calling her an empty suit, thats not so bad. An empty suit just won the Whitehouse. Im too young, but I often hear about how Reagan was the friendly idiot, or an empty suit. He wasnt so bad. Which you pointed out, in fairness.
Im curios though, I dont want to read between the lines. What type of person do you believe Palin to be, if this VP Palin is a contrived persona (which as im sure you know isnt so odd in politics)?

Achance (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 12:43PM EST (link)to be. I’ve certainly never seen any evidence that she’s any sort of deep thinker. She’s been a pretty much cookie cutter Republican politician here until she decided to take on the Party and become the Daily News’ favorite Republican. I saw her in Monday morning staff meetings for some time, from when she was appointed to when she quit – however long that was, and I guess if I were looking for someone to have a stimulating poltical discussion with, she wouldn’t be the first person who came to mind. That said, I can only think of a couple of elected officials that would come to mind for that. Actually knowing anything really isn’t a requirement for elected office. Good hair and the ability to spit soundbites counts for a lot more.

I’m not convinced she is fiscally conservative as I would like (while that may be an Alaska thing) nor prepared to deal with a complex world, but I could be wrong.
I like that she doesn’t embrace the victim label that so many fans want to put on her.

Achance, why did she take on the party?
akhardys (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 5:10PM EST (link)You infer that the only reason she took on the Republican party was to become the Daily News’ favorite Republican.
Could it be that she took on the Republican party and BECAME the Daily News’ favorite as a result?
Do you contend that the AK Republican party was beyone reproach and that there was no cause for anyone to take them on? Could it be that the party had lost their way and was in need of a course correction? Taking on ones own party doesn’t automatically equate to self-interest.
I’m new to Redstate, but I gather there are plenty of voices here intent on doing the same thing at the national level…
“…to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”
No, they "adopted" her. Usually there's nothing
Achance (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 9:11PM EST (link)a Republican can do except a perp walk that will get the ADN’s attention. I was one level below the cabinet and involved in some very controversial stuff for almost four years. They never called me or my cabinet level boss once.
Oh, God no, it wasn’t beyond reproach! It got so bad I took my football and went fishing six months before the end of Murkowski’s term, and just in time to not have the FBI snooping around my office. She was right to report what Randy Ruedrich, the Party Chair, was doing to the Department of Administration’s Ethics Supervisor or the Commissioner; she did both. Then when the Ethics Supervisor came to talk to her about what was going on, she basically blew it off; told him it was no problem. Next thing we know, she noisily resigns and plays kiss and tell, saying, inter alia, that nobody would respond to her allegations of misconduct by Randy. That sort of thing made the ADN’s leg tingle ’cause they hated Murkowski from way back and Randy was the head of the evil Republican Party. So, once Sarah bolted the Administration and, essentially, the Party, they loved her and loved her right up to the day Tony Knowles was the Democrat nominee for Governor. Even then they were nicer to her than they usually are to Rs and it continued so up until she became the VP nominee. Since then, they’ve unleashed Hell on her.
I’ve never said she was lying in her version of the events; I think she believes her version. Her version however is based on a misunderstanding of the law, her agency’s place in the org structure, her role, and the State’s processes. In other words she jumped to a conclusion based on faulty knowledge, acted on that faulty conclusion and brought on all sorts of bad things – and some good ones for her. I’m sure that when the Deputy Commissioner, who was the Department’s Ethics Supervisor, came to talk to her, she concluded that she was being blown off, since the DC was known to be a close associate of the Party Chair. As is her wont, she clammed up, e.g., the Couric interview. Then she quit and unleashed Hell. The rest is history.

Achance, Comments sounded like a broken record.
akhardys (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 1:08AM EST (link)I saw two recurring issues those Alaskans have with the Gov: drawing per diem and wanting to move the capital to Anchorage.
The per diem issue is opposition spin and disingenuous. What am I missing? She’s saving the taxpayers by living at home and commuting (two hours/day) instead of opting for a hotel room in town. She can’t run home for lunch and gas isn’t free. I heard it was higher up there than down here. 60$/day may be a little high…the legislature can fix that if it’s not reasonable.
The capital move has a lot of emotion attached to it obviously, but makes sense from a command and control perspective regardless and doesn’t raise any flags at the national level.
Still, IF she doesn’t get re-elected, I don’t think anyone will consider her seriously for POTUS. Do you think she will be?
“…to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”
NO other State employee would get per diem
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 1:45AM EST (link)in that circumstance.
And the Legislature doesn’t set per diem, that’s the prerogative of the Commissioner of Administration.
And I’ll admit that a goodly number of the posters were simply dumba@@ State employees mouthing off about things they don’t know about.

Leaving the Governor aside, I wouldn’t work for either her COS or her Commissioner of Administration. And, frankly, I doubt any of the people posting thse comments have any real interest in an appointment. In a town like Juneau, everyone who is interested in appointments either has one, knows they can’t have one, or isn’t interested in one. 1. Raise money.
2. Promote the brand.
Duncan and GWB have been utter failures at both. I have also been a failure at my part. I intend to change that during the next election cycle.

I think the really interesting thing about this whole honor for Gov Palin is that we really don’t know how conservative she is. But she certainly did a fantastic job of firing up the crowds during the campaign. She was the only bright spot in a dark moment of history.

Fred in no way put the fire out on anything but his own candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination. His grassroots supporters have taken the lessons they learned from supporting him and gone on to other things. The Fredheads and the DraftFreds have joined together to form The Reagan Coaltion grassroots movement devoted to bringing Reagan principles back to the Republican Party. I mentioned some other efforts that sprang out of his abortive run.
Newt may have had a gigantic brain fart on gw, but he helped to bring the issue of domestic drilling home to a lot of people who didn’t know squat about it before his “Drill Now” effort.
Based on her rhetoric and record, ontheissues.org labels Palin as a “populist-leaning conservative.”That’s just one source, but if you are willing to make the effort to do the homework, Palin’s positions on the issues aren’t that hard to find.

I'm not quibbling about anything you've said Josh.
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 9:08PM EST (link)My not-very-well-conveyed point was that I don’t think the award is so much based on her positions on issues as on her absolute ability to fire up the base at a time when we didn’t have much of anything to be fired up about.
She deserves the award.
Everybody else may have “done some stuff”, but for all intents and purposes, not much came of any of it. Sarah, and I’m somewhat reluctant to say this for obvious reasons, gave us hope.

Hooray for Palin!

She Had a Fantastic Debut
Joe Cor (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 12:15PM EST (link)at the RNC. But I wasn’t impressed that much after that. While she did mention Obama’s ties to Airs, she barely touched on his opposition to the Born Alive Act, which I thought would/should have been a cenerpiece of her VP campaigning. With Charlie Gibson, she acted like she was being dressed down by the high school principal. She actually thought that Katie Couric was going to give her a soft interview, displaying that bizzarre Republican ability to forget about the left-wing media bias. And post election, she has embraced the “reaching out” rhetoric of GWB’s to such a degree that it is almost embarrassing to listen to. I’d love to be proven wrong, but I’m not sure we should all be falling in love with her yet. Just because the left hates someone doesn’t mean she’s the messiah for the GOP.
She was muzzled quite a bit by the McCain camp.
NightTwister (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 12:34PM EST (link)I’ll be interested to see how she handles those things going forward now that she isn’t being handled.

Nice recognition for Sarah.
redneck_hippie (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 6:04PM EST (link)Her profile is already raised high enough thanks to the treason media, but nice anyway.
Right or wrong, someone who gets the lefties’ panties* in such a twist is CLASS A beautiful to me.

If there is someone else
beaming Tuesday, December 23rd at 1:40AM EST (link)that wants to stand up and lead the charge, do it.
I get the feeling Sarah was held back. McCain was definitely wussy about challenging the opposition. Of course he seems to be on their side half the time and doesn’t want to hurt their feelings.
The country wants a leader that says ” bring it on “. Obama did that. The people that swung the election for him just didn’t know what he was going to bring on.
Romney/Palin 2012?
Xasteius (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 3:16PM EST (link)I heard somewhere about this combination. I’m not that enthusiastic about Romney, but Palin fires up the base while Romney has the experience.
Don’t leave the party, hijack it back!

I don’t want to be Reagan. I want to be a Chance/Soros hybrid.
I'd vote for them.
