What happened to “so help me God”?

Barack Obama’s transition site, change.gov gives a breakdown of Obama’s inauguration. According to the website, Obama will deliver the following oath of office:

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

That is, in fact, the actual oath found in the actual constitution. But every President has added “so help me God” to the end.

Washington did.

Lincoln did.

FDR did.

Will Obama? I mean, the website says, “President-elect Barack Obama will take the oath of office, which states . . .” and then gives the text. Why not note “so help me God.” It is, though not in the constitution, as much a part of the oath as “I do solemnly swear” given the history of the words.

Will Barack Obama conclude his oath with “so help me God”?

i can think of a few reasons why he won't...

GCBWI (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 2:45PM EST (link)

1) as a sop to Andrew Sullivan

2) Obama is afraid he’ll slip up and say “So help me, Me.”

3)The Lightworker is already assured of divine assistance, so he doesn’t need to ask for it in his oath of office.

Other reasons will no doubt suggest themselves.

Well

But lets wait until he doesn’t say it before we start to; (pick one please)
call him Muslim,
call him athiest,
call him un-American,
call him pandering to the left,
call him ignoring tradition,
The list could probably be alot longer.

They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.

We are there in the various Tea Party groups, leaderless, but not rudderless.

There is still

some question among historians about whether Washington and Lincoln did add the phrase. The sources saying they did were not always contemporary.

Letters

Erick Erickson (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 3:05PM EST (link)

In Lincoln’s case there are letters from people at the inauguration and newspaper reports mentioning it.

Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?

Yeah,

Vise77 Thursday, December 18th at 3:15PM EST (link)

but some of these letter were hardly timely, and some of the reports were vague, especially after his wonderful Second address. And the case for Washington is hazier still. FDR–yes. Not trying to be a nag. I just wrote a research paper on this subject about 8 years ago, a paper designed to teach my classmates and I the limits of historical evidence.

Really, I don’t care what Obama says as long as he says what’s mandated in the Constitution first. It would be nice if he followed the rest of the document, too, but that’s probably wishing for too much.

Well he did visit the Western Wall

kowalski (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 3:06PM EST (link)

Well, he did visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem and asked God for guidance and protection when he was in Israel, so it’s kind of strange that he would stop now and refuse to say: “So help me, God” at the end of his

“Lord, protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of Your will.”

I guess this is one of those moments where Barack has to decide whether the visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem was really just a photo-op or not.

As I’ve always said, I’m inclined to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this and many other matters. I have the feeling that he’s a spiritual man, at least I hope he is. Academics who have no spirituality are really the most boring people in the world, or else they’re just hideous. So which is it, Mr. President?

Personally if I was Barack Obama I would ask God for guidance over and above any of his advisors. The decisions he makes are truthfully that important to billions of people around the world. There is no shame in being humble to God and asking for guidance — many of the people who helped elect him are extraordinarily religious people, and good people.

I just printed a brochure for the 38th Annual Memorial Breakfast that is being held in Newark, NJ on the occasion of Martin Luther King’s birthday, and Dr. King would have agreed that Barack Obama should include “So Help me God.” I think the guest speaker at the breakfast would agree.

And I would personally like to see it.

Kowalski, it's really difficult for me to square the idea of

janis (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 4:47PM EST (link)

Obama being a truly spiritual man with the way he has comported himself for years. Would a truly spiritual man ally himself with people like Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn, be led spiritually by someone like Jeremiah Wright, do business with the likes of Tony Rezko and lie his way through his campaign?

If so, then spirituality must mean something different than I thought it did.

That's a bit out there, isn't it?

DRP Thursday, December 18th at 6:08PM EST (link)

“Obama will take the oath of office, which states the following:”

It seems literally true. I’m all for questioning what he does, but wouldn’t he have been attacked if he’d included the phrase “So help me God” at the end of the oath on his webpage as someone who hadn’t even read the constitution?

Uh

He got *very* angry when I’d say “bless you” when he sneezed. then I tried “gesundheit”….and he just told me not to say anything.

However, that paled in comparison to the trip we took to IHOP and our waitress told us to have a “blessed day”. Fortunately he didn’t say anything to her, but I heard quite a bit about it for some days afterward.

Of course, he’s a member of the tolerant, compassionate, loving left.

I know quite a few, most of them just say “bless you.” Surprisingly, most of them don’t care about people saying “Merry Christmas” to them either (the ones that did have switched to replying with “Happy Channukah” at my advice).

Plague or demons?

Diogenes314 (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 5:10PM EST (link)

Either way, I’m not sure I want to know.

A legend holds that it was believed that the heart stops when you sneeze, and the phrase “bless you” is meant to ensure the return of life or to encourage your heart to continue beating.[2][3][1]

One explanation holds that the custom originally began as an actual blessing. Gregory I became Pope in 590 as an outbreak of the bubonic plague was reaching Rome. In hopes of fighting off the disease, he ordered unending prayer and parades of chanters through the streets. At the time, sneezing was thought to be an early symptom of the plague. The blessing (“God bless you!”) became a common effort to halt the disease.[3]

A variant of the Pope Gregory I story places it with Pope Gregory VII, then tells the common (though untrue) story of “Ring Around the Rosey” being connected to the same plague.[4]

Another version says that people used to believe that your soul can be thrown from your body when you sneeze,[1] that sneezing otherwise opened your body to invasion by the Devil[3] or evil spirits,[2] or that sneezing was your body’s effort to force out an invading evil spirit.[1] Thus, “bless you” or “God bless you” is used as a sort of shield against evil.

Actually, he went so far as to swear on a book of law, instead of on the Bible, so there would be some precedent there. I, personally, hope that Obama does swear on a Bible, and does affix “so help me God” to the Oath of Office. In particular, I hope that he’s sincere when he does so: otherwise, it’s just empty tradition, rather than an acknowledgement of the fact that man, no matter how wise or capable, needs help from his Creator, and that all attempts to eschew God’s guidance will ultimately result in catastrophe. Personally, I’d rather he be sincere about whatever he says, so that I know where he stands, than for him t fake it for us uneducated rubes.

He keeps doing these things that are just begging for the ‘Secret Muslim’ talk to continue.

Maybe he thinks it’ll destabilize the opposition. Or maybe he’s just an idiot. Or maybe he really did only join a Christian church to aid his reputation as a “community organizer.” Who knows? It’s not as though he makes it clear what he believes.

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 6:39PM EST (link)

what about tradition…regardless whether it was Washington, Lincoln or FDR that started it…it’s tradition now…If he doesn’t believe in GOD why not say it to keep up with tradition at least…it’s not like it matters does it? If he believes GOD doesn’t exist why would it matter anyway since he’d be asking for help from a nonexistent being?

What’s wrong with sticking with tradition…we’re throwing to many out the window and America is losing it’s culture and soul!

Of course that’s the ultimate goals of the left isn’t it?

The text of the oath, which the Obama website quotes correctly and completely, is specified in the Constitution. The words “so help me God” are not part of the oath. Period. On the other hand, every President is free to add the words “so help me God” as a personal affirmation after taking the oath. I expect that Obama will do so, and there is certainly no reason to think that he won’t. Nothing in the website says otherwise, or suggests otherwise, or can fairly be construed to imply otherwise.

Testimony

davo119 Friday, December 19th at 8:45AM EST (link)

I sat on a jury two years ago and when the fourth witness was sworn in I suddenly realized they were leaving out “So help me God.” when they were sworn in. I may be naive and parochial but I was stunned. I don’t see where the motivation is for being honest and forthcoming if you don’t defer to a power greater than youself.
