Reality sometimes necessitates jumping back into your life at times. I have two lives though and they have not, despite my best intentions, merged very well. There is the life there at home with the wife and children and the life here at RedState, which has, for the past year, been all consuming.
In these past few weeks, I have mostly been absorbed in my other life — the one with a new baby, a loving wife, and the sweetest three year old on earth. Neil has done yeoman’s work here keeping the lights on and upgrading. Between the baby and then promptly getting sick, I haven’t been as engaged as I’d otherwise be. Ironically, I was more engaged on RedState last Tuesday while we are the hospital than since. But it is all understandable.
This is all to say, I feel I’ve been neglecting you guys. I haven’t been able to pay attention as much. The nice thing about this site is that I can now get comments to my posts emailed to me, but they’ve piled up.
So, consider this an open thread. If you want my attention for some reason, some idea, have some complaint, etc. here’s your chance. I promise I’ll read every comment to this post.

Ok. So money is now free. I believe now that money is free, and the interest rate cant be lowered any further, the only thing that the Gov can now do to manipulate economics is to act like a bank itself. By this I mean buy private business assets, lend money, ect.
I hope Im wrong in my assesment and would gladly welcome holes punched into my statement. Im not down with the government becoming a bank (can you imagine that the people deciding who gets a loan are politicians, or even worse, buerocrats!!!). Yah I know they bought them all anyways.

Even the free money isn't flowing
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 2:51PM EST (link)Was on the phone with a business acquaintance in England today, and he says to me “Zero interest? What the heck is that?” (Which is BritSpeak for “you Americans are crazy”.)
Which got me to thinking. What is the rate cut doing for the average American? My mortgage interest isn’t lower, and I’m not seeing the bank begging me to refinance at a (much) lower rate. They have to love my old, pay-on-time loan.
I’m going to buy a car in the next few weeks, but I’ll be paying cash. My credit card still has a ridiculously high interest rate, but I just use it for convenience and carry no balance from month to month anymore, so it doesn’t affect me. I really don’t care.
So rates could be 20% or Zero, and they won’t affect my financial decisions right now. My decisions are based purely on my fear/greed ratio looking into the future. Right now, I’m comfortable; I’m paying for what I need and deferring those things I merely want.
So who is getting this “free money”, anyway? It is sure not the American consumer.
Holy crow, I just realized I must have grown up and learned to live within my means! What up with that?

Free Money Isn't Free
Icarus (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 2:59PM EST (link)You’re hitting on a much bigger point here.
When interest rates are at zero, Monetary policy isn’t working.
Banks are taking the money, but it is replacing the money that they have already recognized as lost, or are reserving against what they expect to lose.
They are not using it to provide new credit, which is the foundation of our economy.
So while the money supply builds at these low rates, it doesn’t get “in the system”. And by the time things are better, it will be difficult to bring it all back in.
Thus, deflation today, inflation tomorrow.
Neither is a great scenario.
We’re going to have to look beyond monetary policy for a solution to get us out of this mess.
Icarus, I was hinting at that, but I still dont get it
Alberta (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 7:00PM EST (link)I mean I understand, at least I think I do, why the banks arent lending. They are using the money they got to recapitalize. They are hoarding, essentially.
And I agree when you say when its 0% it (monetary policy) isnt working. The bullets have been fired.
But when you say let the gov act like a bank versus the 1 trillion surplus, this is confusing to me. The surplus would be redistribution, reslicing the pie but not growing it. But when the government spends money giving people loans and (trying) to create credit, is it not doing the same thing? I mean, the gov only has money we give it, unless they print it. Is it not just a stimulus by other means?
I did notice that mortgage rates arent at the 2% they should be at. Curious. Also, maybe someone can answer this. If we own the banks because Henry Paulson bought them via TARP, can they not be ‘ordered’ to lend? Geeze, Im sounding like a commy. Forced lending would be awful but just take the question on theoretical grounds.
Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.
Abraham Lincoln
There is precedent
Steve W (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 8:44PM EST (link)Although the Community Reinvestment Act was not originally legislation designed to compel/force/order banks to lend money that they might not otherwise – it did ultimately have that effect – at least after ACORN and similar organizations got into the picture.
So, perhaps we need to contrive a means of identifying banks that are currently hoarding/recapitalizing as somehow ‘discriminating’ or ‘racist’. It’s worked before . . . why change a plan that’s already worked so well?
Hey . . . we could even package these new ‘undiscriminated’ loans together into nice instruments that we could sell to some large semi-government/government corporation for a profit . . . perhaps Fannie or Freddie (oh, sorry, they’re already tapped out) . . . hmm. . maybe China would love to take on more of our debt!
So, I ask you, why is forced lending “awful” – I’d say it’s politics as usual. (Hopefully the sarcasm and disgust coloring these comments will come through as much as the message.)
The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.

There is still too much fear in the credit market
Icarus (Diary) Friday, December 19th at 10:26AM EST (link)As an example, and I probably will cross post this one as a diary, I’ve detailed here how two Atlanta area hospitals are having trouble – not because of uninsured patients or medicare reimbursement rates – because of the current credit market:
http://www.peachpundit.com/2008/12/19/piedmont-halts-construction-plans-for-new-newnan-hospital/
One is having a loan called by a bank that has received $3.5 Billion in TARP funds, and has applied for $1.4 Billion more. This, even though they have more than enough cash reserves to cover the note that is called and more than two years of their current operating deficit.
The other, and even stronger hospital has cancelled a construction project because the rates they can get for long term financing are significantly higher than were budgeted when construction began. The risk premium – difference between what lenders can pay for money and what they are willing to loan it – is just too great for most businesses to pay. Either those that can will delay projects, and those that can’t will either divert other productive capital to pay interest, or face having loans called with major disruption to their activities.
I think lots of people wonder the same thing
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Saturday, December 20th at 7:40PM EST (link)Bottom line is that we were all sold a bill of goods.
The US government (and hence We, The People) don’t own any banks. We didn’t get equity. We are at the back of the line if these companies fail. We can’t dictate how they run their business any more than any other lender may. (And one could and should argue we should have set some terms of behavior to our bank borrowers, but I digress.)
As for where that money comes from, the US government borrowed it, because there isn’t any sitting in the treasury and we haven’t yet resorted to selling off US assets on eBay to raise cash. So the Treasury floats more bonds, payable in years to come, inflating the national debt, backed by the full faith and credit of the USA, meaning the IRS will shake it out of the hides of American taxpayers, eventually.
Now, so, the banks got ‘em some cash. What are they doing with it? Well, having once worked for a Big Evil Bank (TM) for a number of years, I can say with some confidence that the MBAs are trembling in their Gucci loafers lest they screw up again. They are reluctant (to put it mildly) to lend to anyone save gold-plated customers. They are terrified of having to get real jobs and not be able to drive BMWs and play golf at the country club.
The problem for them is that many of those gold-plated customers don’t want to borrow right now. They don’t see the consumer pounding on the door to do business, so they are thinking like real businesspeople (i.e., those who actually own companies and therefore have a stake in their success). They are keeping their powder dry and praying for sunnier days.
The issue with the bailout, TARP, et al, appears to be that it tried to be all things to all people. While it may have, in the near term, shored up the balance sheets of big banks, keeping them from failing, it’s done little to help the American consumer.
Back in Econ 101 in the dark ages, I was taught that the GDP was a function of three variables: 1) government spending, 2) business spending, and 3) consumer spending.
For many years now, the American consumer has been the major driving force behind economic growth. But if the consumer lacks confidence — i.e., fears for the future — pocketbooks and wallets snap shut for all but necessities.
The so-called stimulus package in the summer, the lousy $600 some people got, didn’t do much. Heck, being self-employed, mine went right back to the IRS
If you really want me to spend, cut my taxes, so I have more money every paycheck. Get off the back of my small business. Then I’ll buy stuff I’m delaying buying now because my confidence in the future will grow. I’ll create demand for products, which will in turn encourage businesses to spend to provide me with those products.
At some point, if banks want to make any money at all, they have to lend. That’s really their only option. Fee-based income isn’t going to cut it. They are going to have to lure the consumer back into using credit cards, taking out car loans, and mortgaging homes by offering good interest rates and convincing consumers that the risk of waiting to buy isn’t outweighed by economic uncertainty. Think of it as “everybody has his price.”
Right now, my price on a car loan is probably 0% with cash back. My price to run up my credit card to buy consumer goods I want but don’t need is probably @ 4 or 5%, so that’s not happening. My price to sell one piece of real estate and take out a new mortgage on a new, more expensive piece is around 4.5 to 5% fixed for 30 years. That seems reasonable to me. YMMV.
But whatever your personal thresholds are, it’s apparent that American consumers haven’t found their comfort level yet. And until they do, they will be staying home and playing last year’s video games on last year’s TV, sitting on the old couch, driving the old car a few more miles, and not moving.

Managing This Website
DavidSage (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 12:25PM EST (link)I may get banned for saying this, but here goes.
I don’t understand why this website has so many ridiculous technical issues.
I’m sure Neil Stevens is a great guy, and is probably doing all the programming here for free and on his own time, (which is appreciated) but if this website wants to thrive, I think some outside expertise needs to be brought in.
There are plenty of websites in the blogosphere (like the DailyKos), that can handle the amount of web traffic a website like RedState generates. I just don’t think having a lot of traffic is an excuse for website not being able to function properly.
People will eventually leave a website if it has too many technical problems. I certainly know I checked out for a while (not that I’m anyone important) because I got so sick of the issues that happened EVERY time I came here. The months before the election, this website was barely functional, and even after the election, there was countless issues. We’re not talking about small glitches here, either.
I mean no disrespect, I’m trying to make constructive criticism, but it really bugs me that arguably the #1 conservative site in the blogosphere is a broken down old jalopy in terms of reliability.
If it’s an issue of money, let members know, because the conservative grassroots is important, and I want to see conservative activism on the web thrive. That can’t happen if the tools we’re trying to use are broken.
I think this is a more important issue than a lot of the directors here realize.

DavidSage (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 12:49PM EST (link)After an important election, after several months of technical issues, all the problems here have been solved.
Doesn’t that seem to be terrible timing?
I think the reason for this website is to engage in conservative activism to help influence elections. Everyone knew 2008 was coming, why weren’t these issues figured out a lot earlier, like say in 2007?
Also, Aaron Gardner, it’s really childish to attack me for bringing up a problem I wanted addressed in a forum where Erick specifically asked for criticism.
I hope the technical issues have all been ironed out at Red State, but this isn’t the first time I’ve been told a new platform is being launched here that will fix all the previous glitches.
Awww did I hurt you feeling David...
Attack Mode (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 12:58PM EST (link)If you think that was me attacking you than I could equally say that you were attacking the site as a whole and that you too were being childish in your rant.
I was simply trying to inform you that your criticism was unjust due to the FACT that the site has changed since you last decided to post here.
In response to my “attack” you then go on to attack the site for issues that have been resolved by the diligent work of Neil and some others. And if you are weary of the new platform and the promised fix…well…the door is over there.

DavidSage (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 1:24PM EST (link)Why the belligerent attitude?
The reason why I’m bringing up this issue that only recently we’ve been told these issues have been resolved. Even in this thread your link got screwed up. Or maybe that was just user error on your part?
You seem to be taking my criticism awfully personal. I’m not insulting any person here, and I really don’t know why your jumping in on this issue since it doesn’t concern you at all. You take this tone like you’re a managing director or moderator here.
To tell someone that has technical problems with a website, “there’s the door” is really immature. It’s not my feelings that matter, I could care less about your rant against me. It’s just a tone that isn’t very professional or accommodating. I think the spirit of this website should be, “let’s figure out how to make this community better.”
I think legitimate criticism, especially in a thread like this asking for criticism, shouldn’t be responded to with attacks. I would like here what Erick has to say about what’s being done to make sure this site isn’t going to shut down again right before the next big election.
I think what happened during the 2008 election with this website was ridiculous. Essentially the epicenter of conservative activism on the web was shut down during the election. I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes at RedState, but I know at most businesses, heads would have rolled.
It would be like Amazon.Com not being able to take orders before the Christmas holiday. It just should never happen, and I want to know what we can do to make sure it never does.
Seems like your ranting would have been more appropriate

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 5:04PM EST (link)Why are we jumping on you? Maybe the nasty tone you started with?
Kinda set yourself up there didn’t ya? Here’s a clue…if you are aware that what you are about to say is likely to get you banned then rephrase it so it’s not so likely…or better yet…don’t say it!
First off, if you had half a clue and had come in here over the last couple of weeks you’d know most of the issues have been fixed and the ones that remain are there because we switched to a new platform a couple of weeks ago and it takes time to go through and fix the issues and set up a new site the way you want it!
Secondly Neil was handed a crap sandwich with 3,0 and did all he could to keep it running while working on the new platform to switch over to 4.0. I think he deserves a lot of credit for the hell he went through because of jerks like you popping off with no idea what the hell they were talking about!
If Daily KOS is so great…and it sounds like you frequent it quite a bit since you know it works so much better than Red State and you seem to know nothing about Red State, maybe you’d be happier and more comfortable over there…by all means don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
First off Your comment “(I know I’m nobody important )” likely qualifies as the understatement of the year award. As for how the site functions…trust me…the regulars here know good and well what issues we all faced before the general elections so we don’t need you spouting off in your ignorance telling us what we already know.
You mean no disrespect?…your whole post is disrespectful. Again, if you had a clue and did the prudent and polite thing in this circumstance and asked…you’d know the moderators have made a switch to a new platform so we don’t have a broken down jalopy any more. We have a new platform that works and is a huge improvement over 3,0 which was also a new platform that sucked and it was the programmers fault it sucked not Neil’s!
Again…new platform, being fixed, if you don’t like it…leave…I don’t think anyone will miss you! on the other hand…I don’t see any rules saying you can’t open the checkbook right mow and mail Neil a check…I’m sure he’d appreciate the gift!
I suppose you know the directors and you know everything they know and what they do or don’t realize…because if you don’t, I don’t know what qualifies you to make that statement! Yet another case of your rudeness and colossal ignorance!
Then there’s this!
Spilled milk, Cat’s out of the bag, whatever euphemism you want to use…whining about it now isn’t gonna change what happened then…I guess that’s the end of your “Constructive Criticism?”
Oh no…wait…after your idiotic and pathetic post and getting your head handed to you…we’re treated to this bit of snivelling:
and then this bit of feeling sorry for yourself…
and another apology followed by yet another dig!
not too bad…had you started in your first post with this tone and stuck to it you’d likely not have been jumped by the rest of us…but of course…you don’t stop there do you?
then this from another post…
First off, we’re not moderators but we’re regulars on the site and we know what’s transpired over the last several months because we’re loyal to the site and those who run it. Besides…it doesn’t take long to get your back up about any subject whether you are a part of it or not when you’ve got a crap weasel simultaneously acting like a victim for being slammed while acting like an AXX to provoke everyone!
oh…and, “It’s just a tone that isn’t very professional or accommodating. I think the spirit of this website should be, “let’s figure out how to make this community better.”
and your first couple of posts were professional and accommodating?
So you had to register several times? Aaron is picking on you for being an AXX?
Then there’s this gem…
Again…if KOS works so much better for you…there’s the door!
And finally you finish off after sniveling about how poorly you’ve been treated with this parting example of your obviously superior intelect and professionalism!
My hat’s off to you…you’ve managed to make me madder than I’ve been since the last time John McCain opened his pie whole…
Erick’s been charitable with you…be glad it’s not me wielding the blam stick!
well said Ace!!! and 555555...n/t

I truly do appreciate all the work you do on this site and for the conservative movement. I understand a website has growing pains, I just felt this site should have been prepared for the upcoming elections well in advance. Were there no issues during primary season a year earlier?
I guess I’m just annoyed that I had to re-register because RedState lost my password after several months of being a member. I’ve had to re-register several times.
I also just got an error message and had to sign in again when posting a response to this very thread. I also had to retype my answer.

In general its houldn't be a problem
Neil Stevens (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 5:58PM EST (link)If the site you’re using for the images is slow, though, then using them will slow down the whole page for people.
If you use a lot of them, then the animations will stress people’s CPUs.

Upping the stakes
Neil Stevens (Diary) Friday, December 19th at 1:44AM EST (link)Ghirardelli finally upped the stakes in the Dark Chocolate wars. Just a couple weeks ago I was disappointed at Target when I saw nothing beyond their 72% “Twilight Delight” squares, when other brands were going higher.
A while back I’d been given a gift of a pack of their dark chocolate, which had those 72%ers mixed with their 60% flavors. My coffee interest* naturally had me loving the 60% Espresso Escape, but I love the intensity of very dark chocolate.
Every time I’ve looked though, Ghirardelli only had stronger stuff in baking bars, a size far too large and inconvenient for my eating habits. But today at Target (coincidentally, not even the same Target. Last time was at the eastern edge of Moreno Valley, this time was at the eastern edge of Riverside), I saw something new: 86% Midnight Reverie. Great stuff.
Naturally I snapped off a little piece of one square, handed it to my brother, and said “Want some chocolate?” He proceeded to shove it into his mouth and chew it up, only to end up running to the kitchen, spitting it out, and guzzling some milk to soften the taste on his tongue. Heh.
* I avoid caffeine in general, though. I can abuse it so badly, so I rarely drink coffee. Allowed myself some for the RS 4 launch though, and that was a treat. Had four bottles of the new dark chocolate Starbucks Frappucinos. Great stuff.
