I find it hard to believe Obama could be more disastrous at this point on the auto bailout than George Bush has been.
Jenn Rubin points out that the Senate was very close to a deal on the bailout, but Gettelfinger, the UAW head, refused to any concessions to get a deal.
Why?
Because he knew he could get everything he wanted from George Bush if the Senate killed the bailout. It’s great to know the Republican President has become the UAW’s whore.
Brilliant.
UPDATE: There is word tonight that Bush may require adherence to the terms of the Corker amendment in exchange for TARP funds. If so, I must retract my “whore” comment. If not, I stand by the comment.

Elizabeth Christian (Diary) Friday, December 12th at 10:24PM EST (link)What happened to Republican President George W. Bush? Has anyone considered a medical evaluation, possibly a mental evaluation? I swear I am not being mean or joking but I think there are just only a handful of explanations for President G.W. Bush’s actions (see below). I am not one of the liberal Bush haters, I tried taking up for him for a long time but what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong and all the mess our President has done since this bailout mess began – he has been WRONG!!! Some theories:
1) He has completely lost it, needs medical attention (like when Brittany Spears really lost it and had to be taken out on a stretcher and taken to a lock down unit for evaluation)???
2) He thinks this will make his “Legacy” better, as I keep hearing about his damage control to his “Legacy”. There is one problem with his strategy – the liberals will never like him, no matter what, and he is just making his base mad and driving us away too, the people in the middle will side one way or the other but not with Bush.
3) He was tricked by liberals – I thought maybe in the beginning but you can only be tricked so much before you figure out the opponents game – so I don’t think this is the case.
4) Liberals have some info. on him and extorting him to work with them on their side???
5) President G.W. Bush was a liberal the whole time???
*** I still say President G.W. Bush kept us safe after 9/11 and I thank him for that, but this bailout mess has made it hard to remember the good he has done.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

SteveLA (Diary) Friday, December 12th at 6:58PM EST (link)Game
You have a loosing argument on your hand, if “Bush sucked less than Obama does” is going to be your mantra. The Republican majority in Congress tried a version of that mantra for the election of ’06, people still voted for Donks, and voted for them again in this last election. There is a message in all that.
President Bush started walking like a Lame Duck, Quacking like a Lame Duck, and Acting like a lame Duck back when the economy cratered in late Summer. Sadly, his administration will bear the blame for the collapse of this house of cards economy, and I’m not so sure that public opinion is wrong. From all the information that has been coming out about how incredibly poorly the the Bush administration ran the regulatory side of banks over the last few years, how incredibly poorly Hank Paulson handled the initial impact and now how the President is doing this bailout of the UAW, do blame “the great decider” for this mess and there’s not a “silver lining” in sight.
I may not be looking forward to Hope and Change Obama, but I am looking forward to an address change for President Bush.

The man is tired of being blamed for everything
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Friday, December 12th at 10:13PM EST (link)I think W is just plain weary, and he decided he didn’t want “and he let the auto industry fail, too!” on his headstone.
If he tosses the UAW a bone, i.e, infuse enough cash to keep the power company from turning out the lights at GM, he can kick this thing into January, when it will be Obama’s problem.
I’m not happy with him, but I do understand. Still, I’m unwilling for any of my money, as a US taxpayer, to go to helping the UAW. When you are ridiculously overpaid to make a crappy product and you suck the host companies dry, you can’t whine when then finally up and die on you.
Sorry, Mr President. I like you. I have supported you when it wasn’t easy. I am grateful to you for all you’ve done to keep this country safe. But sheesh — you’ve been blamed for everything from sunspots to Pluto no longer being a planet. One more won’t hurt; honest.

RoxannaDanna (Diary) Friday, December 12th at 6:23PM EST (link)and in the favor of unions who see Republicans as the great boogey-man. Nothing positive will come from this and it’s definate that the unions won’t show any appresication at the ballot box (when that time rolls around again) by electing Republicens.
Bush will be hurting his party if he bails out the unions and the auto makers. He has to see that. And he won’t be helping out the auto workers, in the long haul, either. And that’s because everything comes with a price.
If the government gives them the money they want, they will have to work under the thumb of congress and a car czar. Is that what they really want? They may not see it now, but they will be working under oppression that they (the unions) have said they have always been against. I mean after all, the message of the union has always been to free the worker from the oppressive employer.
If they get what they want, they will be working for the most oppressive (and incompentent) employer on the planet… the United States Congress. And maybe they deserve it.

Scope (Diary) Friday, December 12th at 7:32PM EST (link)Bush was originally against the auto bailouts. The Republicans finally take a strong stand against the destructive, company destroying unions. Now Bush decides that they need help. He does not want the failure of a major industry on his watch. Gettlefinger and other UAW reps. were in the negotiations and apparently refused to budge. Would it not be better to have jobs that pay a little less than to have no jobs? Speculation is that if Paulson, who has refused to use wall st. bailout money for the auto industry, will attach strings which include concessions from the UAW. Bush can override that also, and I believe he will. Bush is the whore he has been accused of being, and it isn’t the first time. It seems that over the last few months in particular, with the economic problems, Bush has been insuring a legacy no R president would want. McConnell had said, he is relieved that he is no longer constrained by a R president that has gone against the party.

President Bush at Ground Zero and his “We can all here you now” comments were one day that I will remember fondly.

You're right SteveLA...
conservativemusician Saturday, December 13th at 11:08PM EST (link)This is somewhat implied in keeping us safe after 9/11. I lumped all of the military issues under one category when I said this.
I really hate being so hard on Bush, but he has been SO disappointing on the domestic spending front…especially of late with all these crappy bail outs, the worst being the Big 3. As a fellow Christian, I like him personally, but I also won’t be sad to see him go as he has governed like a lib for most of his presidency. He could have been great, but he squandered so many great opporunities.

Think about people in Chicago, or Philly – if they’re not getting their goodies from Obama & co. in 3 years because the economy is in the toilet, do you think a “It’s all Bush’s fault!” is going to satisfy those guys?! Not hardly!
The fact is, come January, Obama and the Dems are ‘on the hook’. I hope they’re ready for it. ‘Cos “Blame Bush” won’t work for more than a few months, and after that anything that goes wrong is all going to be on them.

IJB Saturday, December 13th at 10:34AM EST (link)OK, so this post was meant as a reply to bk’s post.
But before posting and after first hitting the ‘Reply-To’ button, I got a strange error message (it was called something like “Steven’s Follow-Up Error”) which I didn’t understand.
But obviously, that error is what caused this post to list down here, instead of after bk’s and SteveLA’s posts.
So I guess this qualifies as my first “I hit the ‘Reply-To’! I swear!” post, but I’m hoping the extra info help’s Neil & co.
