In the way Richmond county and Augusta city consolidated years back. I’m willing to bet Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle would like to study such a cost saving measure — he seems to be more to the right and closer to the grassroots than GA Gov. Perdue ever was.

That’s why it’ll never happen. But it makes a lot of sense. Some counties are dying. Might as well merge.

Instead of a racial and political hot potatoe like HBCU, why doesn’t somebody propose merging some of Georgia’s 159 counties into some sort of regional governments. My old home county, Emanuel, has maybe 20K people three city governments and an overarching county government plus a county school system. And there’s a lot of counties smaller than Emanuel.

I have about five acres of old family property there and a small, old commercial building. I pay more in taxes there than I pay for my house and lot here in Juneau valued at many multiples of the Georgia property’s value. And it’s all so each little town can have its own cops and maintenance people and a few government admin employees and it can all be replicated at the county level as well and each county gets to have its own bevy of educrats. Total waste of money.
