More on Michael Steele

We are in the process of putting some questions out that we hope each of the candidates for RNC Chair will answer. I’ve already raised some questions about Michael Steele, particularly regarding his time with the Republican Leadership Council and his stance on abortion.

I’ve had a lot of people call me since that posting — mostly people who like Michael Steele and a few people who don’t. There is one thing they all have in common. They do not question his commitment to life issues. Whether they like him or not, they say there is no room to question Steele on the life issue.1

That’s great news.

Also, on the issue of the Republican Leadership Council, I’m reliably told Steele left the RLC after the group began challenging Republicans in primaries. He touches on that in an interview today with the Washington Times.

But he said he would like to see the Supreme Court overturn the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion nationally. Almost all religious conservatives regard the federal constitutional protection of the unborn as a moral obligation.

He also said he has high regards for Club for Growth President Pat Toomey, a former Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, and does not see him or the club as representing the “extreme, far right.” Critics of Mr. Steele have said he has made disparaging remarks about both Mr. Toomey and the club.

**Mr. Steele did acknowledge, however, that he disagrees with the club’s practice of endorsing candidates in primary contests. He said he also disagrees with the RLC’s endorsing in primaries.**

  1. The person who called in opposition to Steele said he felt like the abortion issue was a distraction and is best dispensed with. He said all the candidates are pro-life and there are real issues that need to be examined.

Steele

I recently went to the Maryland GOP Senate Caucus fundraiser, Lt. Gov Steele was the speaker. He was truly electrifying, he gave a speech full of red meat. One of the most memorable quotes was to the effect of; I’m tired of everyone whining, if you don’t like our party then get out. He spoke of standing on our principles, how we cannot become Democrat lite. He also pledged to personally give generous contributions to every State Senator, as well as help challengers as best he could. It was a great speech and further cemented my opinion that he will be a great chairman. Mr Steele then stayed for another hour and a half, making sure he spoke to everyone at the event, I don’t think he looked at his watch once. He will rebuild our party.

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

He's a Superstar with our values

Steele is one of the up-and-comers for sure. I am agreement on his stance on pro-life, I don’t know how it can be a question except from centrists and moderates.

He’s a Lieutenant Governor and well known due to his RNC Convention “Drill baby! Drill!” speach and commentaries on Fox News. How many other Lt. Govs can people name besides their own?

He’s a leader, he’s got charisma, and he’s got good values… ‘Nuff said!

Steele seemed to endorse Eric Holder for AG

Spiral (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 10:41AM EST (link)

Michael Steele’s comments seemed to be a quasi-endorsement of Obama’s apparent nomination of Eric Holder for Attorney General.

Considering that Eric Holder played such a prominent role in the midnight pardons of Puerto Rican terrorists, Weathermen Underground terrorists and Mark Rich during the last days of the Clinton presidency, I don’t believe we can trust Eric Holder to lead the war on terror, as the Attorney General must.

So, while there is a lot to like about Michael Steele and I have been supportive of him being RNC Chair up until now, his supportive comments regarding Eric Holder have forced me to reconsider.

When Barack Obama makes irresponsible nominations, I want an RNC chair who will make this an issue and bring it to the public’s attention.

Glad to know

I am very happy to know that he distanced himself from the RLC. I doubted that he was anything but pro-life as I have heard him described as a devout Catholic, and Catholics strongly denounce abortion.

endorsements from leadership

councils are a problem to Steele, then I have a problem with him as RNC chair. We need a strong person to point out Rino’s in primaries so we can get back to our roots. He is going to need to take a stand on endorsing in primaries so we have true conservatives on the ticket.

Sorry to disagree Erick where Steele stands on life..

He says he is solidly pro life but he thinks Roe V Wade should stand due to stare decisis. In other words he’s having his cake and eating it too…this way he gets to say he’s pro life without doing anything to protect life. By his reasoning nothing will ever change and abortions will continue into perpetuity but he can claim the pro life mantle and we just have to take his word for it…

It’s the way of the prototypical politician…the cowards way if you will!

I don't know what he told the Wash times but it doesn't jive with what he's said about Roe and Stare Dicisis

More on Roe V Wade and Stare Dicisis

AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 6:51PM EST (link)

Steele said he thinks the abortion should have been settled by the states but Roe V Wade “Is where it is” and he believes in the principle of stare dicisis on a meet the press debate with Ben Cardin circa 10/12/2006.

My question would be…has he changed his positions or has he always favored overturning Roe V Wade…if he says he changed hi mind…fine….but if he says he’s always favored over turning it then he’s lying!

Other questions for Steele

AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 7:39PM EST (link)

I would actually like questions 5 through 9 to be asked and answered by all the candidates for chairman of the RNC

Mr. Steele,

  1. What exactly was your roll in founding and working with the RLC and were you part of the decision making process concerning the liberal Republican Groups the RLC is affiliated with?

  2. Were you familiar with Christi Todd Whitman and John Danforth and their anti conservative behavior in the past? If not what does that say about your judgment and political acumen?

  3. Exactly when did you distance yourself from the RLC and why are you still listed on their site as a co founder?

  4. When did you change your stance on Stare Dicisis concerning Roe V Wade or do you still believe it should be upheld on the principle of Stare Discisis?

  5. What is your position on the following liberal groups which are all affiliated with the RLC

  6. GreenGOP.org

  7. Log Cabin Republicans

  8. Republican Main Street Partnership

  9. Planned Parenthood Republicans for Choice

  10. Republicans for Choice

  11. Republicans for Environmental Protection

  12. Republican Majority for Choice

  13. The Whitman Series

  14. The WISH List, “the nation’s largest fundraising network for pro-choice Republican women candidates at all levels of government.”

  15. How do you propose to deal with the top down control of the Party by Moderat/Liberal Republicans and return the nomination process to the rank and file of the Party?

  16. How do you propose to return the convention process and democratize the committee selection for the convention to the rank and file of the party and take it out of the hands of the liberals and moderates that now control it?

  17. Would you favor changing the early primaries to include large Red states such as Texas to counteract the influence more liberal big blue states have on the nominating process in the Republican Party?

  18. Would you favor closing primaries and end the practice of allowing Democrats to influence the nomination process of the Republican Party?

I’d like to see questions 15 through 18…

6 through 14 should have been a bulleted list
