The guy bounced onto the scene as a relatively unknown southern governor whose only reason for being was his pro-life creds. He had no money and no organization and "acquired" organization by making a big flash out of signing up for the FairTax. That was a move so obvious it was cause for laughter. The guy knows less about economics that McCain, Obama or Bush, he's totally illiterate. It was a good political move though, it got him some organization on the ground and combined with some easily swayed RTL folks who were scared to death of Rudy and hated Romney he had instant organization.

Iowa, the zit on the political landscape that starts the process, is nothing more than a test of grassroots organization. Huckabee won Iowa because of the RTL and FT folks. And that was the end of his campaign. Once he got some notoriety, he was never able to raise significant amounts of money nor was he able to put together an effective campaign.

The guy is pretty good in the debate format and can be a pretty good stump speaker, although I'd argue Gov. Palin is better on both counts. That won't overcome the fact that he's fundamentally a Huey Long Populist masquerading as a Republican. Unlike Gov. Palin, who can point to REAL accomplishments over just two years as Gov., Huckabee was Governor of AR for ten years and accomplished specifically zip. And he spent the rest of his campaign after Iowa spinning and lying about what did in AR.

The bloom is off the rose for Huckabee and he - thankfully - accomplished the job all by himself. He's not only not-ready-for-prime-time, he's been outed for who he really is. He's done.

And FWIW, so are, at a minimum, Rudy and Fred. Though for entirely different reasons. People who run campaigns as uninspired and crappy as they ran shouldn't get another shot. Romney is probably done, his campaign wasn't much better than R&F.

She does well on the life issue which is more or less why Huck won Iowa...Win Iowa and you have a good momentum started...Not that it mattered this year...but Palin has potential appeal in New Hampshire...Thus a big threat to basically anyone who's interested in 2012...whether she runs is something else.

I haven't had my head in the sand these past few months...I was trying to argue that he wasn't behind it, but my reason appeared to be flawed...I think it's either McCain trying to "go against his own party" again, or a Kevin Madden-like person thinking short term to 2012 and how best to position their person to win in 2012...Huckabee's guy maybe, as a Palin candidacy threatens him most b/c she appeals most to Huck's constituencies???

This thing is just frustrating. If only the OLD MAN would clear it and denounce the unprofessional people in his campaign. He hired them in the first place. Right? I think he IS RESPONSIBLE for the smearing.

Frankly it doesn't matter anymore. Good he lost!!! Its better fighting 4 years instead of getting frustrated for 4 years.

John please RETIRE.

His own party has never been particularly enthralled with him. He got the nomination because he ran out of money and everybody counted him out. He sat on the sidelines and watched while Rudy and Fred deconstructed with no help from anybody, Romney just never got it and Huckabee never had it. He bounced in and picked up the pieces and walked away with the nomination. He was damn near nobody's first choice (with apologies to Adam C).

That said, he'll go back to the Senate where he's got a cadre of boot licking acolytes who worship the guy (see Graham). Obama will call on him (not directly of course, but through Harry Reid) to help out for the sake of the American People. John will perform his thing again.

His whole purpose in life has been to be the "conciliator, (read enabler) to the Democrat Party all in the interest of "Comity", "Bipartisanship" and the way to, (for the Democrats), get things done!

...Isn't McCain's influence and ability to "work across the aisle" going to be somewhat marginalized now because of the fact that a) most of his democrat friends supported bambi for prez and b) he was bambi's opponent? If so, wouldn't this basically make him a non-factor because he "is a maverick who likes to buck his party," and thus his own party isn't particularly nuts about him?

of all of the people who ran for President last year beyond Obama it was Huckabee that I disliked and distrusted the most.

He strikes me as a man that will do anything to advance himself.

That the silence is deafening. No one, NO ONE, has come to Sarah Palin's defence. She did the one thing that the tried and true standard bearers couldn't do, she brought out the base in huge numbers wherever she went. And this has all of them worried about their own future. I say their future not that of the Republican party or even the country. They don't see themselves supporting anyone but themselves. If she hadn't been on the ticket, McCain=McGovern.

This is precisely why we lost the election. The irony is that the Democrats, who are much more prone to this problem, were able to overcome their internal divisions and focus on the goal for just long enough to win. They are already going back to the internal sniping and backbiting.

I have to echo Rush here,"Conservative issues win elections every time they are tried."

It may be true that the Big Shots didn't specifically order the hit. But they are certainly complicit with their silence. My personal "Leper List" is quite lengthy.

that neither McCain, Huckabee, or Romney had anything to do with the attempts to disgrace Sarah Palin.

This seems obvious to me that it was the work of the liberal Republicans (yes, NeoCons) that were working for McCain. After all, McCain attracted the most liberal of Republicans for his staff and you have to know they hated the idea of a Conservative lady for the VP position. This actually should be very obvious to anyone here at RedState especially...

This will even continue for the next year or so to ensure that she has to respectable place in the party. The thing is though - she is considered one of ours and one of the top prospects so they, liberal fake Republicans, can take a hike!

Their urge to tap down the Conservative base of the Republican Party after this loss is undeniable. I can see no other option other than these same losing Republican members attempting to squash Conservative up and coming possibilities.

Don't call someone "pathetic" and then claim innocence about hate language.

Romney isn't a loyal trooper. He's kneecapped his opposition before. There are press reports that he was kneecapping Palin as he saw her a threat in 12 in the media. It was Romney surrogates that backstabbed and savaged her in the media and gave the left fodder. He could've stopped that any time...if he wanted to.

Please, don't bother protesting Romney's loyalty. It's as convincing as his "conservative" record. He's a typical self-serving Establishment Republican who passes himself off as running on the right so it can give him a chance to win...until he can find a way to win by looking "bipartisan" (ie Michigan).

Any "conservative" candidate not good enough to win this time around against deadwood like McCain isn't good enough for 12. Period.

If people want to know why the Republican party went down in flames this election, its due to "staffers" like these who instead of saying NOTHING and moving on, instead they come out without coming out like the jerks that they are and bash someone who energized the base, drew in MORE crowds then I have ever seen, even more crowds then John McCain, I saw almost every Sarah Palin rally, and the ones that she had with McCain, I saw with my very own eyes after she was done talking they would LEAVE, yeah actually LEAVE, they weren't even interested in hearing McCain talk, now why, he is the one running for President, well, it was because they came to see HER, not HIM. Look, I respect John for what he did for this country, he is a war hero and from what I have seen(until proven otherwise) he a pretty decent guy, but I voted for Sarah Palin, NOT John McCain, if he had not chosen her, I would have stayed home. I voted for Hillary Clinton during the primary, saw her being screwed over by the Democratic party and decided to switched to the Republican party, I thought only democrats could be this evil, I see even the GOP are full of snakes. The GOP has to be cleaned out, these kinds of "people" don't need to represent the Republican party. Sarah is the future of the party hands down. She is OUR Ronny Reagan, and if it is Mitt Romney's people, or whoever, they are slime balls, because Sarah busted her ass day and night for this campaign and the fact that she went "rogue" and brought up Wright and Ayers, GOOD FOR HER!! It's what McCain should have done a long time ago. No, instead he had to be Mr. Nice Guy to Obama and kiss his butt, what did that get McCain, nothing, maybe if he had spent less time being nice and more time attacking he would have won. Without Sarah, he would have lost by a landslide, and I mean winning only a few states, Sarah brought this party together and now the GOP is trying to tear her apart. Unbelievable, no wonder good people don't get into politics, because of evil like THIS. Sarah is my President, in 2012 when she runs, she WILL win because she is REAL, AUTHENTIC, and LEGIT and not afraid to speak the TRUTH. It's a shame the Republican party doesn't have more Sarah's out there representing their cause, they just might have won if they did.

It's sad she has to go back to Alaska.
